A respectful comment based on 45 years making signs. On that split wood on the 3: there is a technique called "climb-cutting" - you run your router the "wrong" direction. In the case of the 3 where you had trouble, you'd run the router right-to-left. Use this technique in any area where you come to a situation where the router's going to get caught in the grain like that. Even the sharpest brand-new bit can dig the grain like that, depending on the species, grain, and dryness of the wood. I think of it as "rolling" along the wood rather than "back-pedaling" against the wood. It is a slightly dangerous technique and MUST be used with great care and a firm grip, as the router can skitter away from you in a fraction of a second. Try this on some scraps - great thing to remember on the two troublesome outside corners - which most rectangular signs have - these can present the same grain-splitting issue.
@davidographicsguy6 жыл бұрын
Very well said John, that’s a great explanation of flowing with the grain. Cedar is more like digging through thick carpet whereas Redwood, the grains are like speed bumps 😁 I was a little careless going around the bottom of the three. I have to have my head in the game every second. Thank you!

Excellent work. Just one little question: You start the video with a COPY PAPER on the wood, then you draw the digits 534 on the paper. Yes? Why didn't you draw the digits right on the wood from the first place? What is the copy paper for??! And one more note: It is a pity that the thickness of the digits is not light brown or even white. Emphasize that the digits are thick and not flat. Anyway thank you for great work and very good video. Tamir Erez Graphic designer.
@davidographicsguy3 жыл бұрын
Good question. I did not mention it in the video, but the letters were created with my computer and vinyl plotter using a pen tool.
@tamirerez25473 жыл бұрын
@@davidographicsguy thank you for your answer. It looks like you draw the digits with your free hand!! I made a lot of billboards in my life, and always colored the thickness of the letters. A color that will be neutral. A little different from the background of the sign, and a little different from the color of the letters. In your case the background was dark gray, (almost black) and the letters were gold, so light brown (or gray) could have been amazing for the thickness of the letters. I know you're an artist, and that's just my advice. I hope you understand what I mean to color the thickness of the letters.
@davidographicsguy3 жыл бұрын
I think you mean an outline added around the numbers. I did not think of that. That would be a great idea and add a touch of elegance. Thank you!

Just curious..what's a decent clear finish for cedar for exterior applications if any? I do quite a bit of work with cedar, but it inevitably turns brown and grey. The reddish colors fade with time.
@davidographicsguy4 жыл бұрын
That’s what I tell clients. It’s wood, and will turn gray and there is nothing anyone can do to stop it. We just have to incorporate the change into the design. Marine grade spar varnish is our best bet for clear coat. But everything will deteriorate in the sun. I tell people that even your brand new Ferrari will fade and oxidize if you left it in the sun every day 😁
@davidnichols15954 жыл бұрын
can you use Poly over everything to help protect against elements.....not familiar with gold flake

Marine grade spar varnish is standard, but nothing lasts forever in the elements. Gold leaf has been used for thousands of years and does not need protective coatings.

Gold is more durable than any clear coat. Like the ring on your finger or the gold leaf applied to the domes of some of our nation’s capital building. 😁 It’s only clear coated if it needs to be protected from wear and tear like vehicles.

Hi David, I don't know if anyone asked this, but how does this kind of finish, the stain, and the gold hold up outdoors in cold, heat and sunlight? How long do you think it lasts (I know, everything degrades outdoors)? I enjoyed the video very much, and will subscribe to your channel.

Great questions Steven, Minwax PolyShades are meant for indoor use because of its low UV rating. I'm counting on the color fading to occur so the signs looks 'Old world weather beaten'. the risky part is the polyurethane, this is always a gamble especially outdoors, you don't know how it will react to the elements, it will fail over time depending on degree of exposure. Marine varnishes are our best bet, but like you say, everything degrades in time...except the gold, that will outlive everything :) Thank you!!
