Carved walnut woodwork is one of the most important crafts of Kashmir. Kashmir is now one of the few places in the world where walnuts are still available. The wood is hard and durable, its close grain and even texture allow fine and detailed work. However, the Kashmiri craftsman intricate and carve out various designs. A variety of carved products bear recurring motifs of roses, lotuses, iris, grape bunches, pears and poplar leaves. A variety of articles, both decorative and useful, range from bowls, trays, cigarette boxes, wall plaques and table lamps to small items such as screens, bedsheets, and large items of furniture, carved in walnut wood. Four main types of carving are commonly practiced in Kashmir - engraved, engraved and plain. Carving of furniture and small objects is an elaborate process and involves high skill and craftsmanship.
