i think it could have to do with the smoothness of the wood in the end, i remember there being some kind of thing close to "comfort rocks" where their smooth surface felt good in your hands and eased anxiety, maybe this is the case here too

Forgot to mention in the video, but fun fact about me! I fractured the bone in my hand that connects to my pinky finger when I was a kid, and it hurts when I carve for too long. So I'm a bit limited in what I can do with my carvings at times and have to literally "cut corners" and just let the carvings be the way they are. Also, thank you for everyone who has educated me on the saw! I love how much y'all teach me :)

Nothing wrong with cutting corners, why do it the hard way when you can do it the smart way :) Glad to see even experts face a brick to carve sometimes lol So its not all me! Here we call the this type of saw a "Japanese saw". It has two sides with different teeth.

Don't worry; it's not wrong to cut corners ;) I also have health/hands issues (but related to a genetic disorder), so it's good to know what kind of wood to avoid in these cases. I now know that, when I start, I will have to look for basswood. Thank you for the tips (and commitment) =) In one of your videos, I believe you talked about wetting the work to make it softer (correct me if I'm wrong). Would it have worked with this one, or is it too dense?
@CarvingisFun

Is there a way to use a homemade knife or just a normal knife for carving? I cant really buy the kits n stuff
@ttaibe
@ttaibe 2 жыл бұрын
@@quandaledingle7092 I wouldn't recommend it. For safety reasons. It depends on what type of knife you have access to. Woodcarving knives tend to be made from harder steel, so it can keep an edge better. A couple things things that the knife needs: Good handle/grip for comfort and control Tough blade, it must not bend easily Hard enough steel that is can hold an edge well (comfort, control) but not too hard so that the blade is brittle. Short blade (long blade usually means less control, long blade blocks view, more risk when you lose control). What is good enough depends on your goals (rough end result requires less). Softer wood is easier to cut and arguably safer. But it is harder to get a nice smooth result with soft woods. If you want to try anyway. Lovely carvings have been made with a decent pocket knife. But use common sense, be careful.

I gotta start getting into wood carving. Mum bought me some chisels a few Christmases ago which are intimidating as hell to sharpen. I definitely messed up the edge of one of them even after all the pre-reading and videos. Also the main problem is not having a workbench and clamp because it's the kind that needs a hammer, rather than just knives.

Thanks for another great video! Watching you helped me decide to give carving a try. I still suck, but it is fun learning. I actually just received this kit a week or so ago and am looking forward to getting the time to try it out.

Don't make the mistake I did an pick up the cherry wood first! Grab the basswood (lighter colored wood) first.

The fact that the beak is less defined makes it a little cuter then the picture on the book lol

Thanks for your videos- you’re great! Re the saw sides: cross-cut fine teeth, rip-cut coarse teeth.

I will have to try one of these birds sometime. I have a drawknife and a couple spokeshaves which will make hogging out the bulk and initial shaping a bit easier.

KZbin reccomened me your Beginners Guide to Whittling and I've been hooked since, may get this kit myself when I next have the cash to spare! I love the cute little bird (also appreciate the comments on making it your own little bird and not how the box is as I know my perfectionist self wouldn't even take time to process that it being my own unique bird is just as good as being like the box art :))

I have a similar Japanese style saw and the instructions I got with it was that one side is for sawing across the grain and the other with the grain.

I saw the comment saying you had the cherry by mistake so watching you perplexed at how hard the wood was at the beginning made me chuckle ruefully on your behalf. Loved the bird and I prefer the beak you did to the one on the box. Also, thank you for helping to calm my anxious mind. I’m very grateful :)

@@CarvingisFun I really felt for you, but, it was interesting to see how different the woods are, I’m new to all this so I didn’t really know if you were just super strong or the wood was really soft. Turns out it’s both?! Lol

Nice!! Make sure you start with the basswood block (lighter color block) as it's a lot easier to carve.
