What a great channel and luckily there is a German translator. In German-speaking countries you won't find any of these well-explained videos. I still have a crucial question. Which leather do you use? How thick? What do I have to consider? Warm greetings from Germany

I butchered mine pretty bad. First thing I’ve ever made. Gonna try a spoon tomorrow instead. I think maybe I’m too impatient. Great video I just struggle with taking my time. Mine is now a beaver of some sort.

So I just got started in whittling, this was to be my first project, I can see why you tape your fingers in your dominant hand, because it's impossible to hold the knife with a glove on lol. Is that tape reusable?

how can i use cardboard/denim in place of leather? do i just do the same you showed just not on leather? i want to get started soon but the soonest i can get a decent strop is a week from now!

Any advice for what you are looking for in grain direction by TOUCH? I am visually impaired and can sort of see the discolorations in the Basswood but I am still confused on how you can tell it goes from left-to-right vs. right to left (if that even does make a difference). If I run my fingers along it, one direction feels smoother than the other so I am assuming that would be the direction the grain goes.....? Please explain like I am 5.

I actually made a better video on this, hopefully in a matter that is easier to understand: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKvEqndngbV_os0si=YE03B_zwJbiFL7QG But to your question on determining by touch, I imagine 4 sides of the block will be smoother and 2 sides a little rougher and will be on opposite ends. Imagine you are holding a bundle of straws in your hands, this is the equivalent to the wood grain. The rough ends of the wood are the same as the openings of the straws on either end and are the ends of the wood grain. The video I linked will give better descriptions than I can provide with text. If you have any questions still, reach out and I will do my best to answer them!

I have the first generation of this knife, and as a Whittler and woodcarver, I found it to be absolute garbage when it comes to its geometry, it’s very weak tip, and the relentless stropping of the blade. For the price, I guess it’s OK if that’s all you have, but don’t expect miracles. I wish Rough Ryder had done a little bit of homework before putting this knife out and calling it a whittler. Also, why 2 pen blades?? I get that you want one to sharpen your pencil for when you are making your measurements and markings, but two is a little unnecessary. A coping blade would’ve been way more useful.

I am 45 and did now my first whittling with your fox tutorial. It took some time, but went out with no problems. I used a cheap carving knife and the gloves and tape you are using. I am also a sharpening enthusiast, so my knives are always sharp. This was so much fun and I wish had started to try this out many years ago. Thank you!

I used a 1-3/4 inch whittling kinife (sometimes referred to as a bench knife) from Helvie Knives. However, their wait list is still super long, but flexcut and silvern works makes some good ones too.

@CarvingisFun9 күн бұрын
Things I would recommend is a whittling knife, a gouge and a v gouge. This will take care of 99% of your small carvings. Then a leather strop with honing compound to keep it sharp. Flexcuts palm and knife kit with a leathet strop will take care of most of your projects

I signed up for This Month's Craft and last month was a wood carving of a bird. I had a really hard time with it and have rage quit several times. A co-worker suggested I look online for videos since the one for TMC, to me, was lacking the "in between" portion of instruction. I am finding myself cannon-balling into these videos and, when you said "start making your own designs" my first thought was a miniature for my DnD games. :D. I taught myself how to knit about 12 years ago and my 3rd ever project was a lace-work shawl so I have no "intermediary" filter when it comes to things like this. Thank you for such well developed videos! I am visually impaired to the point of legal blindness and I have been able to understand and follow along with the few videos I have watched so far. Very well done!!

Ordered from beavercraft and the knives were rlly dull and didn't cut the wood at all. Got a replacement same thing was very hard to make an indent in the wood at all. I have some sandpaper how would I sharpen this waited like 2 months am just rlly disappointed

I love flexcut but lets be honest. No knife comes outbofnthe box ready to carve. Yes they come razor sharp, but still need stropping. I do not like folding whitlers but the pocket jack series is kool if you can only afford 1 whittling knife.

And i still gotta order a Foredom replacement flexshaft, ill need hook knives one of them circle knives and detail knives then i gotta look into carbide burrs and stuff

Being from Europe, OCC Tools knives feel nearly impossible to get. Ordered a sheep's foot Drake knife that seemed very ok in price, same went for shipping. Only issue is having to wait 6 months up to 1 year to get the order. Hoping it arrives soon this year and the quality will be worth the wait.

I "SOAK" my wood in a 50/50 Water/Alcohol solution in a tupperware container. Makes a "BIG" difference. Of course having a very sharp knife is a must.
@Isak536717 күн бұрын
so it's not about cutting from left to right or right to left, but more 'cut down not up'? or am I still misunderstanding? do I have to know what's up and down (like, the direction the tree was growing in if that makes sense)
@CarvingisFun11 күн бұрын
For the most part, what direction the tree grows will be how the wood grain is laid out. It does take some hands on experience with intent to further understand
