Carving a Wooden Cup

This time I try Carving a wooden cup from dry Spalted Beech! It is a cut off from a slab that i had laying around. Although the wood is quite hard to carve i had so much fun doing it. I soaked the finished cup for a couple of hours in RAW Linseed oil and wiped it off afterward, I let it dry for 3 days. Pure linseed oil is a food-safe finish and it works perfectly to seal up the end grain and prevent the cup from leaking. You can find all the carving tools I used in this video down below!

That came out beautifully. I’ve had a wood carving project on my list for a long time. Well I did one a while back but nothing ambitious as this. I have a question though. Did you notice any off flavors from the linseed oil in the tea, or is it stable enough not to transfer or emulsify into the beverage?

I bought my son a carving kit and he has really taken an interest...I also am having fun with it plus the good bonding time with him! He asked me how to make a cup so here we are! We both enjoyed the video!

Yes is the best way to bond with your son especially when they take such notice and pursue their self to such an extreme like me his father they both been very successful in making character figures Not just from Basswood but hardwoods as well go spin 9 to 13 hours on one piece and the end result is beautiful

Wonderful job! i am currently living in the north of Finland and these are called Kuksa up here, made of birch wood. as an experiment, i recommend that you try making another out of birch and sealing the outside only with oil, the bowl of the cup traditionally is sealed with a strong hot coffee then rubbing the coffee grounds into the bowl in order to spread the fat of the coffee into the wood. It will be a coffee only cup though, but I promise it makes a wonderful drink all the better (if that was even possible! 🤣)

I have one of these given to me in Northern Norway...believe it is called a Goski (?) the local folk law said the first drink had to be some type of spirit and the tree that had given up the timber to be toasted...yep I did this with mine

Nagyon szép lett, habár sörnek túl kicsi... :) Én is incselkedtem már faragással, de jó szerszámok híján, a végeredmény sem lett tökéletes. Amúgy a sörös kupát fontold meg, igaz kicsit más eljárással tudnád csak megvalósítani, mint a a kuksát, de biztosan jól nézne ki.
