The legs and top forming this sculptural table will be carved from a single piece of wood that is the root section and trunk of a myrtlewood tree. As you will see there is quite a problem to solve in deciding how to approach making the initial cuts into this tree section. This video is the sixth of 9 chapters in my 81 minute documentary titled "The creation of abstract form in wood: Carving sculptural tables." More information can be found on my website www.davidgroth.com

The way you can see the shape from these root balls is amazing! I just started looking for Burls on fallen wood when I am hiking. There are some amazing grain lines in small burls on the trees I find. Sometimes I can kind of see something I would like to make with them, but the way you see these is a whole other level. Thanks again for sharing this series.

Its amazing! there is a sense of multidimensionality in these utilitarian pieces of art. You are the elf of the wood.

Fabulous to be shown the thought and practical processes. That road runner has a bit of honey badger to it i thought. Wonder if it would be possible to make a giant microwave oven cheaply using the magnetron(s) of a domestic model and a big metal water tank or similar to be able to dry the work in less than 6 weeks.

Thanks...possibly a few ways to dry the wood faster. Another wood artist friend uses a vacuum kiln.

Where do you find saws for such subject matter, I've never witnessed such minute saws for such perfection & exact cutting!

The full video is 81 minutes long. I divided it into 9 parts for KZbin so the lengths are manageable. Each of the 4 tables carved is covered from beginning to finished piece.

seems like if he knew he was going to be cutting with the 'BIG SAW", he would have chain sharp....and he needs to mow that ratty looking grass while the wood is drying

Yeah, cos that wood looks completely ruined. If only he had the faintest idea what he was doing, eh? You tell him.
