General art tip for everyone out there: don't hyperfocus. One of the best pieces of advice Ive ever gotten from an art teacher. If you focus too highly on one section, it wont fit in with the rest of the project. Stop periodically and take a look from a distance. No one is going to so closely at it and find that one little thing you couldnt fix.

My Grandpa was really good with making stuff from wood. He made most of the toys for my mother and her 6 brothers and sisters. I’ve always been fascinated by the stuff he made and making stuff from wood in general. After seeing your video I think this will be something I’ll be learning in 2022! Any advice for equipment that will be good for a beginner woodcarver? 😄

From my experiense from wood working, leathercrafting and blacksmithing. A knife that lies nicly in your hand. (Go to a store that sells knifes and try the handles on them. It should feel comfortable, and have a nice size for your hand.) A good first aid kit. (Docen't matter how carefull you are, you will cut yourselfe soner or later.) Whetstones/ metal sandpapers grit 600,800,1200 (can go futher if you want, but in general those will be enough.) A pice of leather to strop your knife on, preferably somthing hard/dense. A pice of plywood with a bit of polishing compound like Autosol on will work fine. Pece and quiet, remove any source of distraction from around your selfe. As an beginner you can be easly distracted from what you do, and end up hurting either your selfe or someone ellse. ALWAYS sit down with the knife while it's unsheted. And in its sheat while walking around whit it. Make shoure to sheat it when not using it, less risk of knocking it on to the flore. IF there are other people around. Make shoure to have at the least ONE arms length from any one ellse. (This is a safty thing, to prevent people from running in to you while carving) Dont carve while tired, and take reguarly brakes every 10-15 min, as so not fall in to a craftsmans trance. It's when you stop thinking and just do stuff, it can increase the risk of hurting your selfe. Just put the knife down, stand up, stretch and take a few steps around the room. Take the opertunity to grab a coffe or somthing. And allways keep your knife sharp. Make it in to almost an religius exersise to sharpen your knife after every session. In my own experiense, it's the dull knifes that ends up hurting people the most. A sharp knife will do the work for you, and a dull knife forces you to work with your mushles. And its when working with mushles most beginners end up hurting them selfe. Allso don't cut toward your selfe, or have fingers in the direction the knife is gonna cut towards. These are lessons i've paid for in blood... lots of it.

I had limited materials so I just decided to make mine out of black play doh and used a plastic silverware knife as my whittling knife. I think this was a very fun and cute little project and had a great time making the fox even though I didn't make it out of wood. Also making it out of play doh actually allowed me to bend the rules a bit and make the design a bit more detailed. Good video, detailed instructions, and fun/educational.

@CarvingisFun
@CarvingisFun 2 жыл бұрын
Im glad that the videos can bring up souch wonderful emotions! Mango wood is a little on the harder side but isn't out of the realm of possibility for whittling. My preferred wood to use is called basswood (aka lime wood or linden wood) as it is the perfect balance of hardness where you can easily carve it with hand tools but still add details. Mango wood looks to be a little more rha than twice the hardness of basswood, so it can be whittled but may just take you a little longer. Other good options are pine and butternut as they are close to the same hardness as basswood. For more choices, you can check out this article I wrote on my website: carvingisfun.com/best-wood-for-whittling-and-wood-carving/

I randomly got recommended this and now I really want to try this myself- Edit, unfortunately losing the heart cuz of it: I’ve never carved anything before actually! This vid makes we want to start doing it as a hobby!

No clue why this was recommended to me, but these videos are really calming. I've been watching them while drawing or when I'm trying to relax on my work break. Your instructions are so gentle and watching you carve is mesmerizing. I have occasional hand tremors so I don't dare try carving by myself yet, but I think this might make a fun activity to try with my grandfather one day. Thank you for this cute little fox, he's so lovely and I'll let you know if I make him one day 💕

Your comment about having a tremor caught my eye. I encourage you to give it a shot.I have a severe tremor of the hands, and I whittle, using the same protective measures you see in the video. I have yet to cut myself.

@@gmgllc8059 thank you 🥺💫 so if I just use the necessary protection I should be okay then? That was really my main concern with starting something like whittling. I can be a little shakey so I didn't want to get into something if it would just be a safety hazard, but knowing it should be fine I might give it a shot when I have the time

This looks amazing and fun I'd love to one day follow some of these tutorials they're very calm no stupid overly loud music or rushed parts. Very clear and instructional. Wow you made it look so easy. I'm just getting into carving and I already spent hours on carving a 5cm/2inch mushroom. That seemed like a nice simple thing to start with and learn. In stead of like something really hard like a gnoom and get disappointed. I learned a lot by just watching you carve this fox. No cutting against the grain. I learned that already haha. And the steps you follow like waiting to do the legs at the end cause you risk breaking them if you hold it the wrong way. It all makes a lot of sense. And you are so right when you say: it doesn't have to be perfect. I was maybe trying to hard to make the perfect mushroom but how many perfect mushrooms are there in nature. I should not waist too much time on that. I learned a lot so thanks! And I'm gonna check out more video's soon.

Thank you for this video tutorial Brian, it was actually thanks to this that I was enchanted with the subject and inspired to buy a tool set and some wood and get started. This is the first thing I made; this fox. It went pretty well until the end with the head... I couldn't make the shape as good as you did, but not just because of inexperience (mostly, probably) but also the fact all 3 of my knives have a straight blade, not curved. So I messed the head up and it got smaller and smaller and smaller.... So i reduced the snout and made a squirrel out of him haha. Anyway, I almost never leave a comment so excuse the length of it. I really just wanted to say my thanks for inspiring me to take on this hobby ! : )
