I received the OT24 SPLINTER as a gift. Had the same issues you did. However, I am new to carving and sharpening blades, so I still use it and get plenty of practice with my whet stones and slip strop.

I was given the Old Timer just before I discovered your channel and I agree with your assessment. The lack of a lock is actually a positive in many places, including here in the UK, where locking blades are not legal. 😩 But like yourself I do most of my carving at home. Thanks for the comparison Brian. 👍

Welcome! The lack of a lock on these guys were fine for most of the tools, but I did have the gouge and chisel tools disengage a few times on the Old Timer. I believe this was primarily due to the cutting edge becoming dull and requiring more force to remove wood, thus causing me to loose some control on the tool (never a good thing). I'm sure that if it were able to hold a nice sharp edge, I wouldn't have a problem.
@williamn014 жыл бұрын
Ivancho how do you find the old timer? Was looking at buying one I'm in the UK to. At £130 cheaper I'm a bit cautious as to the quality of it.
@williamn014 жыл бұрын
@@CarvingisFun does the flexcut strop work fine with the old timer then? I seen someone else sat on another video it wouldn't work.
@ivancho58544 жыл бұрын
@@williamn01 It doesn't hold it's edge very well William, but it is convenient. In the UK I would stick with fixed blades if carving at home. As an EDC you have to tread so carefully. The law is intentionally vague and so much is up to police and courts, you could so easily be made an example to deter others. I have some ideas on a dedicated ECD friction folder kind of like the Svörd Peasant, but circumstances stop me at the moment (no garden 😂). Check out Paddy's Potato Peelers channel, he usually has a discount code for Heinne Haynes. Let me know how you get on. 👍

Looks like I need to amend my last statement, the SlipStrop that comes with the Carvin' jack is completely different than the one that Flexcut sells by itself. So no, the regular slip strop that is sold individually won't work with either tool, you need the specially made one that comes with the Carvin' jack to work with the splinter.

I'm 61 years old and I can pretty confidently say that every folding knife I've ever owned eventually ended up closing on a finger or 2 if I ever tried to do any carving with it. You should always wear a glove, but if you're gonna use that old timer, you might wanna wear 2.

I have to say that I haven’t had any of those issues with the old timer. It’s super sharp and hold the edge extremely well. I’m not sure why yours isn’t good, but my old timer is a favourite by me when out and about, I’ve carved multiple projects and have honed maybe twice ?
@CarvingisFun4 жыл бұрын
It is quite possible that the steel is inconsistent from knife to knife.

I’ve seen that before! From low budget to quality. Sometimes it happens
@jmoffitt362 жыл бұрын
Mine was pretty horrible, yeah it kinda works and I worked on it for hours. Never got a good edge. Maybe you got lucky and got an old batch. What I got would only be good for Soap/Candle carving and clay I guess. Accidents happen when you have a dull/subpar blade.

Old timer and Buck moved their plants to china. I found their blades don't hold their edge as well. I have several Flexcut tools including the Flexcut carving jack multi tool all I've had to do is strop it occasionally. Good video. You were right on with your review.
@CarvingisFun3 жыл бұрын
Yep, the quality dropped quite a bit after going to china.

Buck never moved their factory to China. They make knives in China for the big box stores. All original modes of buck are still made in the USA

Good morning. Thank you for the video. I am new to carving/whittling-I have only done just a couple and did enjoy it. Trying to find time to do more though-really like the 1 knife carvings. I did get the flex cut knife for Christmas from my daughters. Wondering what the tape is and where to get some-I’m sure it’s so you don’t slip or get cut! Thank you and have a good day

Howdy! the tape on my fingers is self adhering ace wrap. basically self adhering athletic wrap, its cheap and reusable.

Would you recommend the carving jack or the spoon jack for spoons and bowls and cups while sitting round the camp fire
@CarvingisFun3 жыл бұрын
100% the spoon jack for spoons and bowls. It's cheaper, has the hook knives you will need, plus the grip is more comfortable. You may have issues with cups with either one, but I think the spoon jack may still be better.

Just found your channel and subbed. I am looking to get into this hobby as it always has fascinated me. I like the smaller wood carving with details like sprites and such but being new and not much of an actual artist I am wondering if they are difficult to make. Also for that type of work which knife do you suggest of the two you review here> Unless you think I should go with a single knife like the Morakniv Wood Carving 120 Knife/ Please let me know as I am excited to start but just dont want to but any knife and wind up spending more later because I made the wrong purchase. I also assume I would start with spoons as I read that is best way to start so please take that into consideration. Last but not least do you have any beginner carving videos that show you how to make certain things? Just found another video where you compare all the jack knives. Should I go with one of them? What would you recommend for me knowing that I want to learn the hobby and eventually do fine detail type carvings?
@CarvingisFun3 жыл бұрын
Welcome to the channel! As to what knives to get, that will highly be dependent on both your desired carving path and country of residence (mainly due to availability). So let me know what country you live in and I will give ya some great regional choices to you. If you want to get into spoon carving, Mora sloyd and hook knives will more than get the job. You can also get great tools from Deepwood Ventures, Flexcut, and OCC tools. The jack knives, or any whittling/wood carving pocket knife, will typically cost more for the convenience of having all the tools in one device. This may make it harder to choose as you may find yourself wanting more than one for specific tools. This is why buying individual tools may work better for most who want to get into wood carving. I do have some step by step guides you can check out for ideas and inspiration here: Step-By-Step Whittling Guides: kzbin.info/aero/PLhLMm2vJBECTUlTn9ejprku08Umz9et6A

@@CarvingisFun Thank you I am living in Florida USA and as I mentioned earlier I would start with maybe some spoon stuff but would eventually like to do some finer detail things like faces and sprites etc. As far as a budget I have no problem spending 100 bucks on something that will last me and is worth it but I also dont know what else I really need aside from a knife or multi-tool. I know I would need protective gear and sharpener and a strop of some sort. Sigh where to start lol...

A fellow Floridian! Thankfully, we have the latest available market here in the states, so plenty to choose from. I'll put together a little list for you this evening when I get home from work. It's easier to do it on my computer vs my phone. You can also check out this video that I cover what you will need to start and links in the description. Maybe after 3 years of you making this great video, there will be a better non locking version with better steel. As I live in the UK 🇬🇧 and its highly illegal to have a lockable or fixed bladed carving or pocket knife. And I don't have a garden or a pourch to sit in. At the moment I'm in a park with a victorinox. I do like the look and the cost of the old timer, but don't fancy trying to sharpen it every 5 minutes. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

There are actually a few knockoff brands out there right now that I have on my desk now that actually seem to be superior to the old timer but still at the same price. I'll be having a video about them some time in the future, more testing is needed though.
