Pivot slips are my favorite drill! Though I find that they have a much effect on ones skiing when you do them slower. The super fast pace in the demo allows you to “cheat” and force the pivot without the proper body weight changes. I always have people start perpendicular to the hill and begin a side slip which transitions into the two skis pour in down the hill and finish with a hockey stop so the skis are once again perpendicular to the fall like but facing the opposite direction you started at. And no poles. Keep that upper body pointed down the fall line with hands up and forward in an athletic position. It encourages proper upper and lower body separation. Oh and watch your upper body on that corridor drill... I thought I saw it following the direction of your skis instead pointing down the fall line... haha

Ski Patrol uses the short slip turns (a sort of Falling Leaf) to bring toboggans down the hill. If done right the toboggan goes straight down the fall line and the patient inside it gets a comfortable ride.

Great tips, thanks. I skied Cervinia and Zermatt in 2017 and my technique was tip top at the finish... but then I missed a year. I skied Milky Way last year and my confidence was shot, I struggled and at the end of it all I pulled my calf quite badly. I was being too cautious. I'm hitting Deux Alpes and Alpes DHuez this year so I won't be making the same mistake, these videos (hopefully) will help.

Hello Stephen, We are very happy to hear that tips have been useful to you! Having enough time on snow is clearly one of the best things you can do to keep your technique up to scratch. Have an epic time this season in France and we hope the drills help you out!

I am no expert but as a coach I make my high school athletes work pivot slips every season to work edging, fore and aft balance, upper/lower body separation, and as an introduction to the "Falling Leaf" drill. Try doing this in a corridor. Try it on one ski. Even if only as a skill assessment tool for new racers and a reminder of some very important concepts for experienced racers this drill has its place and is good to keep in the toolbox. But don't take my word for it. Burke Mountain Academy has a great series of drill videos advocated and narrated by a young Burke Academy graduate by the name of Mikaela Shifrin. This drill is also part of the USSA Skills Quest evaluation. If this drill has a place in the world of alpine racing why would there be a disconnect with recreational skiing? It is important to put these drills in context for each individual we are instructing/coaching which is incredibly challenging to provide in a video format.

We also have a great blog article about pre-season/off-snow ski related exercises so feel free to have a read here: getcarv.com/blog/preseason-ski-workout There is fresh content on the way so stay posted!

Fully commit! Take off one ski and leave it at the bottom of the hill. You only get down the hill of you have your weight forward and are engaging the tip of that ski haha. It’s a great drill to reset your skiing, and it’s so much fun to lead an army of 12 year olds on one ski down the hill. Makes everyone look at you in confusion haha

No snow this winter where I am in PA, maybe 2" total if you include one late fall storm. Snow falls have been dwindling year-by-year the last several years but I have never saw such little winter weather. Record warmth also. Many resorts will struggle to keep open in the future. In probably 10 years, skiing will be a thing of the past in the East unless you are in northern NY/New England. Enjoy the last of it! Luckily, we now have an indoor ski area near NYC. Thanks GOP and most of humanity for not listening to scientists, climatologists and Al Gore! It's very sad and makes me sick.

@@CarvSki There is no disagreement the information here isn't based on a building platform that creates results for skiers. There are proper places for skiers to learn how to advance. This video isn't one of them.
@agenthex4 жыл бұрын
The pivot slips shown are meant to isolate leg/body separation, which is an essential element of advanced skiing. They're not how anyone actually ski down the mountain, which is why it's called a drill. I know Harald Harb teaches direct-to-carve, which is certainly commendable, but it's not possible to carve without that separation. Of course, if someone already has just the right kind of athletic talent/ability, it's possible they can tip their feet or balance on their outside leg (a la Lito Tejada-Flores) or some other cue and have the rest fall in place. But if someone is missing other essential pieces, such as if they have stiff hips, or balance in any typically manner on their feet, drills to teach various underlying skills in isolation is necessary to move forward.

Pivot slips are one of the most useless drills. Once you've done one each way, and repeated correctly one time, you gain no benefit from doing any more. Some coaches have their skiers do a thousand...waste of time. The flaw with his short-medium-short arc drill is he doesn't tell how to correctly make the turn radius. If you tell us what to do, also tell us how to correctly do it.
@CarvSki5 жыл бұрын

Easy there, Tiger. There is plenty to learn from pivot slips. Try them on different slope angles, in varied terrain, on weird snow, with a tall stance versus small, on different skis, with a rapid pivot versus slow pivot, with different weight distribution, in poor visibility, wide stance versus narrow, with your boots unbuckled and so on.
@mickeyandlucy5 жыл бұрын
@@CarvSki Yes, but...once one can reliably do pivot slips, there is no need to ever do another. There are better drills to improve whatever else needs improvement.
@mickeyandlucy5 жыл бұрын
@@AkatarawaJapan OK, but...once one can do pivot slips in the conditions you describe, then move on. A great coaching technique is look for the Single Most Important Movement a skier needs to improve. Work on that until that is working, then look for and work on the next SMIM.
