Although it's important to see "proper" technique in instructional videos, it's also refreshing to see a skier learning to improve. In most cases, the audience is probably more at Jacobs level (or lower) and can relate more easily to how he's handling the drills.

Benni, great video! I watched this earlier this week the night before my first day on skis this season in Colorado here in the US, and the next morning I practiced your tips and drills. Very grateful for this lesson, especially on body separation. It was what was missing (or, ok, a major part of what was missing.) Once I practiced it on easier Blues and got muscle memory locked in for this in conjunction with proper pole planting, the change was dramatic in terms of my carving and speed control on harder (steeper) runs.

Great instruction! Next point for his overall skiing is hand/pole extension to initiate the turn, rather than at the middle of the turn. Follow that up with maintaining the angle from turn initiation to turn completion.

Enjoyed the lesson and the views which I couldn't see in January 1986 snowstorm with my Arlberg instructor. Keeping shoulders square, quiet prevents the upper twisting. Knees bent with angulation proper stance in the turn, pressuring the downhill ski. I like a wide stance on hard snow, close together in powder. Pole planting maintains rhythm too. Aufwedersain.

BEST yodel ever, I love my short turns. I must disagree with tip 3. Knees and ankles aren't meant to bend sideways. I propose to let go of the edges. What's wrong with letting snow bleed diagonally under the bases? I can; relax and stand up. With some dignity because there's no hurry the ski can arc around in an easy smear. With no bending joints sideways there's no stress. I can decide where my turn ends and when the next turn begins. In woods, chutes and cliffs slowly moving is still relaxing and has the most control.

Great video. Thank you. Can you tell more about the ski's. What do I need for short turnes. Can it be done on 84mm center wide all mountain ski's?
@CarvSki3 жыл бұрын
Hi Barts, Short turn skiing can be done on a variety of different skis. In this video, Benni does his short turns on GS race skis with a radius of over 20m. Other skiers however might choose to do short turns on more of a slalom ski. With all that said, short turns are certainly possible on a 84mm ski. Perhaps it might be worth trying to get out to a demo ski day to find the ski that feels right for you. Have a good winter ⛷

Benni, I’ve seen a video of you in bumps displaying a very solid technique with a super steady upper body. Now I must say I am a bit surprised about your super narrow stance, and excess of power in your pole planting here, rather than just a gentle tap / pace making, particularly coming from an Austrian demo.
@benniwalch34363 жыл бұрын
Hallo I just like the narrow stance to be playful with all the movement’s. Why should I use a wider stance when I can do it with the narrow stance.
@santii.46193 жыл бұрын
@@sheltermutts4185 not really. Balance transfer is more of a “consequence” than a “cause” and merely controlled at the foot level more than anything else. You “activate” your foot muscles and bones (toes/metatarsals and heel) to “edge” your skis and transition from one edge to the other. This combined with gravity/speed/centripetal force leads you to a balance transfer between your skis. A narrow stance in reality “flattens” your skis as it prevents you from extreme carving (the reason why you will notice important separation of legs in all racing disciplines (slalom, G, SG). A narrow stance works perfectly for mogul skiing, since you don’t need to carve them as much but instead you want both legs to act like “one piston” in unison, absorbing the terrain underneath you, and also preventing the chance of skis entangling themselves under such a dynamic movement.
@santii.46193 жыл бұрын
@@sheltermutts4185 if one of Marcel Hirscher’s ski boots is touching the other leg’s knee it is precisely because he has a “shoulder width” separation between his legs, wouldn’t you agree? (Instead of a narrow stance). Otherwise both knees would be touching, same with boots and skis and together (due to a narrow stance). But if that cited fact is not proof enough then I am afraid I might not find the right words to make it even more clear.
