Pull the wiring harness from the trans, and see if the plug/harness are wet with trans fluid. If so, the plug (pilot bushing) needs to be replaced. That’ll explain some of the residue on the trans. At 129k it’s probably a good idea to perform a trans service as well.

Couple of questions about the coolant system: #1: shouldn't you also check inside the car to make sure the heater core is not leaking? Yes, it *should* drain out of the car, but the drain might be blocked. Also the interior might have a scent of coolant. #2: Even though the pressure check showed no signs of leaking, shouldn't it be checked for combustion gasses to make sure there isn't some sort of deeper issue that would only come about in extreme cases? There's evidence of "hard driving" (as intended, like you mentioned), so it stands to reason the engine has been run hard.

He never tested the coolant pressure cap. The cap could be the pressure leak. Water dissipates out of the coolant tank with daily changes due to barometric pressure. It's slow, but six months can lower a coolant level with a bad pressure cap.
@redriver152624 жыл бұрын
@@talltomtube that makes sense. I used to own one of these and the Coolant expansion tank is actually made up of two pieces that are attached in the middle and over time, the glue (or whatever holds it together) dries out and the plastic eventually becomes brittle. That combined with hot pressurized coolant causes coolant to SPEW out from that middle attachment point and sprays it all over the engine bay. i found this out when i got a "check coolant level" message on the dash and as soon as i opened the hood i saw coolant spraying out of the expansion tank and going EVERYWHERE LOL

If your German vehicle has a valve cover, oil pan or filter housing leak don't just assume gaskets are shots, you need to know the reason why they are shot. Sometimes a bad PCV or CCV can blow gaskets over and over again. Most of these BMW/Mercedes gaskets can indeed become hard after a couple of years but I always think it's 50:50 bad gasket vs CCV or similar.
