Why do you say that Bass wars? Automobile manufacturers have steadily improved on it-albeit from the most important aspect of them all- Emissions. I still smog cars for a living and recall this generation of Volvos having very high NO X standards amongst other similar vehicles in their class. Not saying they are terrible cars at all. In fact I like the styling and practicality of the generation right after this one and would definitely pick the right one up. However from an emissions standpoint (if I'm remembering correctly) they leave a little to be desired.

I live in my 89' w/ my hound & 2 raccoons. My 9th 245 estate/vagon. Purchased for $300 usd & have invested over $3500 usd in parts. Rebuild done @ a farm under an oak tree. All funds awarded from proving American court agents & attorneys are paid liars. One Tx attorney gave me $1000 just to stop calling his office. Last year I taught my self how to rebuild the AW70 automatic. My reply is to prove that love for these autos is what truly keeps them going. Can't afford the upkeep? Learn to do it. Look up a video & buy a Hanes manual (easy picture follow) Chilton's has more indepth info. Less than $100 usd in tools is all you need to do anything. Also, buy a wrecked unit for spare parts & dismantle it to learn.

Fun Fact: Here in The Netherlands, our King ( back in 1995 ) once got in an accident where a semi truck sandwiched him between the Semi and a side rail. He got out alive because he was driving a volvo. Any other car would have crushed him do death. The Volvo SIPS ( Side Impact Protection System ) saved him.

@@HockeyVictory66 I own 3 Volvos, Volvo S60, Volvo 242 and a Volvo 245. I 100% prefer the 240 over my S60. And in my opinion, the only thing the 240 really lacks is power. My 245 is bone stock, and my 242 is a project car that im putting a Mercedes engine in. In Sweden, the old volvos in general are driven by all ages. Cause they're incredibly reliable. And people prefer the older ones.

My current and first car is a 92 240. I love the car, it’s comfortable spacious carries all of my friends and does everything I want it too. And the turning radius is amazing, it can turn tighter than my friends mini whilst being twice the size, love it.

I learned to drive in a dark green Volvo 144 (1968), with dual SKU carbs. It was a tank...and my dad ran that car for years. I believe he sold it after it had accumulated over 500,000 miles. We did swap out the automatic transmission with a standard at around the 350,000 mile point. That was a cool project.

My dad had a white 244 when I was a kid and I think you put those first car experiences in a special place in your heart. I know I did. Unfortunately we sold it before I got my license but still, each time I see a 240-series I have to stop and admire. 30 years later those things are still going strong. 240s are legendary cars here in Sweden, almost everyone have driven one of these atleast once. I had a 1992 Volvo 244 as my first car and it was awesome i could fix everything myself , i even changed the fueltank myself. And the Bug Ninja is correct at 2:00, that happend to me 500 meters from home so mom toed me home and i put a new belt on during the weekend and after that i was back on the road. They are also super fun in the snow if u have a open parking lot or big space. Thanks for the nice showcase of a surprisingly not so sun-bleached red 245!

That car brings back memories for me as well, Wizard and Mrs. Wizard. My parents had an 1981 240 DL Wagon that was Burgundy and had the 4 speed manual with push button overdrive transmission. A lot my beginning behind the wheel were in that car. We called it "The Square Box".

The vent is so that when you close the door, the air pressure can be released from the cabin. Sedans have the vent just above the deck-lid.

Like Mrs Wizard, my daughter who is now 40 years old learnt to drive our Volvo 245 as a teenager. The difference between the 2 cars is that we had a manual gearbox with an overdrive button on the gearlever. My best Volvo was an 850 T5, manual gearbox 5 speed, and the mechanic that fitted the engine also race prepared T5's and 'R' versions.

My sister totaled THREE of these, all bought new by our parents. Two in accidents, the third through mechanical neglect. It was eventually given away to a poor guy. We heard that it was later stolen and crashed in a police chase! But it saved her life twice and I love her (even though we don't talk anymore) and I love the 240. These were the cars I grew up in.

Those glass headlights are E codes which came on the European model. The US headlights were composite due to DOT lighting regulations. Also the amber/white turn signal lens is for the euro market. The ones in the US were all clear with an amber reflector inside the lens.

Ummm not quite all. THOSE in particular may be - but I had a 91 240 that had glass lenses (with amber inside, but it faded out). I thought they'd been swapped as well, but I had full records (I was second owner and got it at 25k miles - all and I do mean ALL service was done at dealer from day 1) - my 90 240 had plastic, though... I suspect when Volvo had a batch run issue on the composites, they threw in the glass ones??? Dunno, but know it may be actual originals. I also know they did that on some later models as well - like my S60R . OH and the E number? That just tells what country they were made in. If you looked on the glass and plastic parts on a lot of european stuff back then, it would have an E-xx (xx being a number) that told country of origin.

@@CaptainSeamus Incorrect. The number on the E homologation is the number of the country the part was homologated in. Every European country has its own number. Nothing to do with the country of manufacture. The part can be made wherever, in China for example, but it needs to meet the European specification to be legal for road use. In order to do that, the manufacturer needs to have the part checked and approved in an European country. 1 is Germany, 2 is France, 3 is Italy, 5 is Sweden, 11 is the UK etc.

I had a Ford 150 pickup truck with "top hat" rear brakes. Like the Volvo, it had 4 disc brakes and a pair of rear drum brakes inside the "top hat" built into the rear rotors. This just proves how industrial the Volvo 240 was. Great system.

Volvo is great. My S60 2005 has been places 4*4 would think 2 *. Had the turbo replaced and have some issues like air-con ($ 2000) not working, but what a car. After all the years and where I had to take it work, it still feels like the car I got off the show room floor. I cant get it sold, but its still a great car. I had the 245 to help me with a business I was running at the time, I needed a van and then I thought an old Volvo I can use as a van and a Family car, it was never the fastest car but once it started gone it will just keep going up and down steep hills in northern Britain I don’t think the car even realise there was a hill it just kept on going, I would fill it with equipment so that the tail would be hitting the ground and it just kept going i’ve had four Volvos since then and I love them and I say there’s cars and there’s Volvos to complete different beasts, once you’ve had one Volvo it’s all you ever want

I've been waiting for this video. Love my 1990 240 wagon. They are great. Those glass headlamps are either European or aftermarket E Codes, which is why it has the amber and clear turn signal and parking light lenses. North American cars came with the polycarbonate headlights and clear corner lenses. E Codes use a different corner light assembly. 92/93 240s came with factory installed air, if ordered. Prior to that, it was a dealer installed accessory across the board. The black rectangle on the right quarter is a cabin air exhaust. The sedans have that below the rear windscreen. The 1800 ES started with those vents, but it incorporated the fuel filler as well. At 136,000, that car is barely run in. Mine is at 400,000, running perfectly. The body on mine is almost that nice, in spite of 31 Ontario, Canada winters. That cage was sold as a way to keep dogs on the way back. Or to keep dogs out of the way back. It was dealer installed and is very uncommon to see. The funny thing is everyone thinks they are slow. On the interstate, though, the problem with speed is keeping it DOWN. They settle in at 85 and just cruise. At that speed, expect about 30 miles to the US gallon. They will do about 450 miles on a fill. Just amazing old beasts IF you drive them like you stole them. Virtually everything is available new, through Volvo or from places like IPD, FCP Euro, or Swedish Car Parts. If the instrument cluster needs work, Wagonmeister rebuilds them or can sell the parts to repair. They also have a replacement fuse panel that uses normal blade fuses. For the bullet fuses, the Mercedes dealer sells the OEM type ceramic instead of the lousy plastic ones.

The vent on the back is for the flow through ventilation. I would think the pads on the headrests are an option and probably just clip on. The last 240s in Australia were 1991. They had different mag wheels and a wooden strip across the dash. Had 3 240s, still have soft spot for them.

Proud 92 244 MT owner here. 275k/MI? Odometer broke a while back. Daily driven for 5 years. Still going strong and most importantly if something does to wrong, it's a breeze to replace! I did the timing belt on less than two hours and i'm an OK mechanic. Parts are dirt cheap. People give me thumbs up and a smile. Great video, that is a very clean example. As a Göteborgare ("Gothenburgian"), I love this video. I grew up with these cars, and I worked for Volvo for a few years a long time ago. Adrian is right, the black grille is the exhaust vent for cabin air No, there isn't a big problem with reindeer collisions (though they do happen) since we only have reindeer in the northernmost part of the country. Moose collisions, on the other hand, happens all the time since we have them everywhere. That's why the A-pillars are reinforced on volvos and saabs (Saab was the first to introduce this in the sixties) Also, what happened to riveted brake bands??? Those glued ones are useless

I got in a head on collision once in my 850 with a Honda Civic. The front of the civic was DESTROYED. The lady drove it away but it was easily totaled, I’m surprised it was even running. Meanwhile my 850 just had a scuff on the bumper. Volvo and Mercedes are the best

240s are amazingly tough. In the early 90s, my little sister was driving my moms 245 and someone on a test drive in a brand new Camry didn't see her stopped for traffic to make a turn, and rear ended her. Final Score - Volvo had a dented rear hatch (that we popped back out with a little heat and a few judicious smacks with a mallet and a 2x4) and needed to have the bumper shocks replaced. The Camry? It was totalled. It hit hard enough to drop the motor on the ground and crumpled it up like a beer can.

I had a new '83 245 for 17.5 years. In '96 I bought a '76 244 as a parts car but turned it into a daily driver. Eventually both became one, that I sold and the guy's daughter drove it to and from distant university for three years. It was destroyed when she was hit by a truck, but she walked away uninjured. I loved those 240's.

I owned a 1987 760 Turbo Intercooler Wagon (765) much like Hoovies' but automatic. I LOVED that car and still miss it. Someday, I hope to get another one just like it.

When I grew up my dad had a red 245 turbo wagon. Then a white one which I saw a couple of years ago, rusty as fuck but still going strong. Then he bought a 2 year old 945 2.3SE when my sister was born in 95, my mom drove it up until 2018 when the cost of repairs exceeded the value of the car. And soon after that when the 90's cars became tax exempt (30 year rule) mostly all old volvo shot up in value. They grew on trees for 1000$ when I sold mine back in 2013 (940 GL sedan) and now they all are 3000+ for a GL with 250 000+km. A 90 740 turbo with 5000km sold for 20000$ (about 230000kr). Its insane here now. 🇸🇪

The vents.. Best i remember; in those days a lot of cars were having trouble with the doors closing due to air pressure. It can also aid the vent setting on the climate control.

They are pressure vents to allow thru-flow of air. All the wagons had them out there - the sedans had them located coming out at the back of the trunk and down low - but not visible. My S60 has them located low at the back in the trunk as well.

The first vehicles I noticed that door closing issue on were of course,1980s Volvo trucks. Just crack open the window a little and the door closed. I don't like slamming things!

I had an '85 245 Turbowagon with the 5-speed (4-speed with pushbutton OD), awesome car, especially around 3200 RPM when the boost kicked in! And absolutely loved how the doors closed...like bank vault doors...

My dad had a beautiful 265 GL decades ago when I was a kid. It was so special. I remember feeling so proud when it appeared to pick me up from school. It was the whole family's pride and joy. A 2.7 Ltr. six cylinder automatic with full leather interior: perfection! This newer 245 is pretty much identical (close enough): it brings back memories, all happy. Glad it doesn't have the US headlights!

The name "240" arrived in 1983. They were into that "option packages" or something. But higher end models just had emblems like GLE or Turbo. But in 1985 the DL and GL was back. But the 240-emblem stayed. And yes, the B230F is a non-interference-engine (and it has 116HP BTW). But if you have a "K-engine" (like B230K) it´s actually an interference engine. But I actually thought that all 1993 had the B230FX with 130HP. Maybe that was true here in Sweden only. Bug-Ninja is right about that vent in the rear. It´s the "exhaust" for the cabin. About mooses, yeah we have a lot of them here. But rain-deers (the christmas kind) is only in the far north of Sweden. In the rest of the country we mostly have deers (the Bambi kind), and of course all of Sweden is full of mooses. BTW: Wizard, you HAVE to tell the owner to get that front "Gustav-plate" in white. We have white plates in Sweden front and rear. The only that has yellow is Taxi´s. To me that plate looks dutch or something.

In canada we just installed the “K” cam in our b23 makes a big difference in power! I currently have a 1978 245 7 passenger , without the spare tire bumps at the rear ! Owned it for almost 40 years now.

Funny moose fact : you'll find reinforced windshield frames on any Saab or volvo from the 1970s onwards, since accidents with moose in the road are so common here in Scandinavia. The Swedish manufacturers made cars which wouldn't let moose inside 😊

Yes and moose /elks are so big a car will cut the legs of and then you have an enormous animal flying straight into your windshield. Sometimes they survive and kick their legs trying to get loose and kick the driver and passenger in the face.

You mean A pillars and they are strong for rollover along with the B and C pillars and roof beams. Ads from the 70s stacked 10-20 Volvo's on top of each other. They would need to make super strong glass to prevent an animal that fits the size of the frame coming through

@@cruiser6260 usually when you hit a moose, it doesn't go through the windshield. Reindeer is also a problem, but nowhere near such a big problem. But they do (did at least) crash test their cars for moose protection. Since you usually hit the front or back of the animal, the roof and a pillar structure is what saves your life.

I had an '80s 244. Changing brake pads was as easy as inserting a cassette. Headlight maintenance done by taking out the whole headlight frame with two thumbscrews. Super easy to work on. 👍
