The Wizard is awesome. I had a DPF sensor go bad on my Skoda Superb, which uses the identical 2.0 TDI engine as the Volkswagen Passat, the Audi A3/A4 and similar to the Audi A6. The part was $157 at the Skoda dealer. $238 at the VW dealer. I didn’t even bother asking Audi. All prices were excluding labour to fit the DPF sensor. I found the identical Bosch part (OEM) at a specialised auto parts import store for $53. It was literally one bolt and two small hoses on the side of the engine. Both Skoda and VW dealerships quoted me a minimum of 3 hours to get the part fitted. It took me 10 minutes. Just look a little further than the length of your nose when you need something repaired...

Parts cross-referencing is something that is done in the Porsche 928 world. You can use things like Ford Tempo motor mounts and an '88 Camaro V6 alternator on the 928, along with a whole lot of minor parts from Volkswagen. It pays to look up part numbers. What is funny is that I have no mechanical training whatsoever, and in 2006 I did an intake manifold refresh on my 928 to include having the injectors cleaned and flow matched, and when I put the system back together, I did exactly what the Wizard did when it came to looking for fuel leaks. No one taught me, it was just instinctive to me that I should pressurize the system a little at a time and then look at things and SNIFF for the odor of gas. Excellent excellent video!

Question: Does this mean that I shouldn't use ethanol mixed fuel in my GMC truck?
@Vic9mm4 жыл бұрын
Jeff I believe that fuel sold in the U.S has 10% ethanol at most if not all gas stations. If you check pure gas dot org you can find locations where they sale pure gas but don't be surprised if you're no where near a place that sales it. Your GMC truck should be fine using gas/10% Ethanol mix but anything higher then that your vehicle should be a Flex Fuel vehicle.

Depends on the year of the truck. Modern vehicles that are built and certified can run E-85. Also depends on how often it sits. Regarless of the blend (E-10, E-15, E-85) Ethanol starts to go bad in as little as 1 to 3 months which can cause a lot of issues. I use as little as possible. I don't ran ANY in my small gas engines. Premium Non-Ox only for those. I started doing that several years ago. When I switch to ethanol free gas in my mowers, chainsaws, etc. I also stopped having fuel related issues.

Car Wizard: Fixes Ferrari with Kia parts. Ferrari: "Hey! You can't do that!" Car Wizard: "Actually, I can. Your part cross-references it." Ferrari: "Oh... Well, enjoy driving our well-built Maranello." Car Wizard: Goes for a test drive. "Weee!"

I went through this about a year and a half ago for about the same price, except we opted to put in mounts from Ricambi since we were getting the main filters and gaskets from them anyway. We also balanced both throttles with a borrowed Leonardo. When the owner told us that he had spent over 25K at the dealer and a "specialist" trying to address the problem we realized that we were selling ourselves way too short.

@@norm1233 Why shouldn't he tell people he has a Kia? When people bash on Kia/Hyundai basing their opinions on what Kia was in the 90's and early 2000's is just pure ignorance. I'd much rather own a Kia or Hyundai than many other brands, including ANTHING "american".

No it is a Bosch derived fuel system.
@OMGWTFLOLSMH4 жыл бұрын
I'm sure that would be a huge selling point, or even a great pickup line that many attractive young women would fall for, but the Bosch pump is German, not Ferrari derived.

My starter for my 4cyl s-10 was going to be $200, but I cross referenced the number and got a clean and new looking one off a Pontiac V6 minivan for $25 at a local U-Pull junkyard. I was proud of this but you sir take the cake for this ingenuity. Great stuff Wizard.
It's a real pleasure to see a mechanic with a brain do their work. So many techs just follow their book knowledge and don't think beyond it and it shows the value that experience and intellect can have a real impact on the end result. I really wish you were working on my work car as I've had to do my own research on my car so I can suggest things to the mechanic my workplace mandates I take my work car to. They're idiots and can't think outside the box.

I have a 348 and we cross check everything, Most people don't realize that Ferrari sourced many parts from the automotive world and parts are shared by lots of manufacturers. Cool tip: Kia crank positions sensors are a direct replacement on my car. However, there are some that are Ferrari-specific and either they are NA, used or hyper-expensive as NOS. My car shares those fuel pumps but they are mounted underneath the car. You had it so much easier in that 550. I'm due for replacement of the rubber parts in the assembly that have been damaged by modern fuels. Can't wait for that project.

Very good job, but I do recommend to fill up the tank and recheck for leaks it could leak from the pump cover when having a full tank.
