One trick an old mechanic taught me: start the car and remove the cap where you pour the oil in. Then, put your hand over the opening. In a new car, you will feel no air puffing out. The worse the engine, you will feel light puffs of air in time with the combustion. A dying engine will actually have oil spitting out with the strong puffs of air. Hope this helps someone.

The biggest and best warning Wizard gave is no title. If you don't have a title all you have is a very big paper weight that rolls. Unless your intended use is strictly off road or for parts and even then some scrap yards will not haul away the carcass unless there is a title to ensure it's not a stolen and stripped car. Make sure the name on the title matches the name on the sellers drivers license and also do a quick check to match up the I.D. number to the number on the title too. DMV's have made mistakes on titles and when you go to register and the I.D on the car is off by one digit you have a whole new nightmare to go through with your local DMV.

I gave the guy post accident pictures showing him the damage and he bought it and was happy with the purchase. Another time I sold a car, when at the dmv doing the title transfer I put the car in the ON position to check the mileage and forgot to turn it off (push button start). It was a cold February morning with an old battery so it drained. By the time he got in to drive away the car wouldn't crank. I had already left. I told him to change the battery and I wrote him a check for the price of the battery and put it in the mail. He cashed it a week later.

The Check engine light comes on when the car gets above about 40 miles an hour. Below that it goes out and doesn't come on. It has an issue at least according to the code with the Vehicle speed Sensor.

Good video. I have also heard that if the seller will not let you take the car you are considering to your trusted mechanic for checkout-DO NOT BUY. Also, if you buying one of those old cars, like the Cadillac, you might want to take a magnet. I live in Texas, and years ago, I knew a person who brought an old Buick down from Michigan. The car had rust where you might think rust could never occur. Nothing like a Texas car. He finally filled it full of Bondo, got a cheap paint job and sold it!

@Byron Manza only if it ticks when cold and it starts slowly fading away as engine warms(~5min+). Also when the engine has warmed up to working temp remember to test a warm start also! So shut it down and see how engine starts and idles hot. Sometimes even in newer cars(2010+) some of the seals have weakened, and when engine gets hot and expands it might leak and lose compression. It is most noticeable when you turn the engine over hot and then keep an eye on the rpm how it fluctuates.. In a good engine it should immediately settle at ~750-900rpm and hold steady.

People do it all the time. I work in auto parts and I heard story after story about how ... this car was a great deal on it ... and it turns out to be a Euro, Cadillac, or other former high end car with HIGH mileage or a car that smokes just a little, it seems to lose antifreeze every few days ... etc. etc. Now the free cars ... you should know better ... but so many people only look to the status that a particular type of car will exude to others. I've had people that had purchased higher end (high milage or high age) Porsche, BMW, Cadillacs, Mercs, etc ... that have NO IDEA how much is cost to maintain said vehicles. Knew a poor ... poor ... guy who bought his dream car at auction through a dealer he worked at. A 2010 Porsche 911 (turbo with about 50k miles) for around 30k ... great price right ... until he found out it needed brakes. The vehicle had the Ceramic Disk Brake rotor option ... he quickly discovered WHY it was at the auction for such a low price. Front brakes ... (current prices rounded up) -----Rotors $6,000 each -----Calipers $1,000 each -----Pads $500 Rear Brakes .... -----Rotors $5,300 each -----Calipers $700 each -----Pads $500 Total $27,000 Somehow he was able to get his money back ... Needless to say ... DO YOUR RESEARCH ... I’m semi-retired after 30 years in the car business. In my experience there are by far more crooked private party sales vs. dealers. All the time we had new customers bringing in a just purchased private party car with major problems. I felt sorry for their expensive mistakes that cost them way more than what they “saved” by avoiding dealer markup. The basic issue with private party sales is they only have to sell this one car with no concerns of repeat business. A lot of people are morally challenged and feel no pain when dumping a dying car on an unsuspecting buyer. They want YOU to take the loss.

There are some pretty shady major dealerships out there too. I've walked way from a couple of deals because what the salesman had said about the vehicle did not make sense. Desperate for his commission? Manager put him on notice for that month? Perhaps. I've dealt with both and all I've got to say is if your are going to buy, do your homework first. Don't get sucked into the pitch. Leave your emotions at home. If you are dealing with a private seller, again, do your homework. Get AAA to look it over. Get a mechanical inspection done. Get it up on a hoist and LOOK at it. And make sure you can get title for it too. It's unfortunate but some people are their own worst enemy.

@@codyluka8355 no doubt it goes both ways - its just that I saw more bad private party cars than bad dealer cars. I only worked for reputable dealers - one of my criteria when looking at changing dealerships was how well the dealer performed after the sale customer care.
@codyluka8355
@codyluka8355 4 жыл бұрын
@@Thomas63r2 Absolutely the aftercare of a customer is the bigger part than the sale itself. The dealership does not make very much on the sale of itself but on the service of the vehicle in the service department. Buying a used vehicle from a dealership (reputable), used to be relatively hassle free with the inventory being mostly trade ins. Now inventories are sourced through auctions and commercial lease returns with little of its history known. Some dealers, like many private sellers, will try to sell you anything but you need to fully check the vehicle before writing that check. If you are buying a 10 year old vehicle with high mileage (most dealerships wont), you're going to go to a private seller, hoping for the best. But you have to do your homework or you're going to buy someone else's nightmare. I'm glad you have a conscience...most do not unfortunately. It's very easy to get caught up in the moment.

When I was 18 I bought a 1991 YJ Wrangler 2.5L 4-cyl, 5-speed. The seller was a tenant of a friend. Jeep looked mint, but the seller didn't want me to drive it, he drove and I was the passenger. After buying it I found the transmission synchros were crap, AX-5 would grind gears (something I now know isn't uncommon). Bought the Jeep for $5,500, sold for $4,500 on ebay motors (disclosing transmission issue) back in 2002(?).

Another issue that you must check. Make sure the Airbag light comes on when you start the car, and then goes off. Airbags are very expensive to replace, and a lot of cars that have been in an accident and are fixed, the seller does not want to spend the thousands of dollars to replace the airbag, and disconnects the airbag light instead. People have died because of this, where they get into an accident and the airbag is missing. This is far more common than people realize.

You want to make sure a car’s background is clean as in clean title, no major wreck, has seevice record, etc before you inspect the mechanical and physical condition of a car. A few more tips: 1. Tell the seller you want to inspect the engine Cold (feel the radiator hose). Helps discover if it has a cold start issue, and some problems disappear once the engine warms up. 2. Before even going to see the car ask who's name the title is in. If its an open title or some "friend, etc" the seller is probably a car flipper. Also make sure the title isn't "Salvage or Reconstructed" which will be a BIG problem when you title it. 3. Beware if the engine and undercarriage look super clean (another car flipper tactic). Better to be a little dirty. Easier to spot leaks. 4. Scan the car an make sure none of the I/M Monitors show "Inc" (incomplete). That means the codes were erased so the check engine light is off (but it will come on again). 5. Make sure the VIN on the car matches the title, and carefully check all info on the title. 6. If the inspection expires in a month or two there is a good chance they are selling it cause it needs repairs to pass. 7. Only exchange money at the title office. 8. Never look at a car at night or in the rain.

Mr. and Mrs. Wizard: So appreciated this particular video. Am an old guy, retired builder and carpenter. After over 40 years as a builder, I joke that I know everything their is to know about houses (not really true). But I admit I don't know much of anything when it comes to buying a quality used that doesn't surprise me with major hidden defects after I get it home, and I think I must have bought 50 or more, over my lifetime, between myself, my kids, my former business. At the moment I'm looking to replace my 1993 Toyota T-100 with another older model Tundra. My budget is 10k tops. Most all of what I can find for sale, be it on autotrader or wherever, are from used car dealers. I've not found many if any that are completely honest about what they're selling. Any advice or tips from anyone or where to look, would be much appreciated. Car Wizard, I know what you mean about titles-in-hand, as they say. I once bought and paid for a used car at a very reputable dealer, on a promise that they were getting the title soon. I returned the car for a full refund after two weeks and no title yet. Thanks again for this video!

If you're buying a car in the UK a very simple check can be the MOT history, which is a free service on the Gov website. Can get a quick idea of how well the car has been maintained - i.e. I'd avoid cars that have failed for things like having multiple worn tyres. Also helps verify the mileage.

Usually well off, cars are clean, the new one is in the driveway next to it (estate sale/grandma who just passed away cars aside). Then there is the never-ending pile of hoopties and oddballs past the first owner... Almost not worth bothering with unless it's just a beater to get to work and back.

I bought a used 2009 Nissan Frontier basic King Cab truck this past May with 165K miles I thoroughly inspected for all the red flags you put forth in your video underhood and underneath and it all looked good on this vehicle. Being near the part of the year when it was long daylight I overlooked to check the lighting systems. This fall I discovered that I have no low beam headlights; after inspection, the body control module has been diagnosed as being bad sending no output signal to the underhood relay box. Lesson learned, $1540 for a new BCM; vehicle was priced for quick sale at $5500 for this reason.

My 02’ 525i sport. The transmission liked to go into failsafe mode but you Could get it out by shifting to neutral and starting. It is a black connector with male and female pins that can rotate if it comes loose which will send incorrect signals between computer and trans. The bmw was great even after I rebuilt it from a crash, so I learned everything about the e39! Would consider an m5 because of it. Every car has a hidden story. How much of the book can you speed read? You’ll never know everything. Sometimes a bit of smoke off a valve cover is normal for some cars esp. European. I have the SL500 now and it’s a much faster and better car, just had it serviced for 280$ they corrected my abc suspension, changed my oil, filters etc. and did a general reset of the computer. I hope it becomes a collectible one day. I’ll never get rid of it

This video really helped me out. Went and got a 2002 Chrysler Sebring convertible. Less than 38,000 miles. However, it has been sitting for years. Only thing done to it was start it up once every other week and replaced 2 batteries. Yes, it sat that long. Going into this, I knew I was going to buy four brand new tires as I kind of figured the other ones would be dry rotted. Even though it was stored inside, 20 year old tires are not going to be any good. Everything checked out with the liquids, no rust issues, everything worked mechanically. The convertible top was perfect, almost in brand new shape. The test drive was great. Steering tight, brakes are great, and wheels are tight as well. Before anybody comments, I know the 2.7 L V6 is not the greatest engine. I will get the mileage out of it that I can and get a 2.7 L Jasper rebuild when this one dies. The glue around the rear window was perfect. So besides giving this thing a major look over for any other problem that I could not identify, four brand new tires, a couple of hydraulics for the trunk lid, and a new rear antenna, I think I did pretty good for what I paid for it. I am not saying what I paid for it because it was a heck of a deal since everything checked out. Way below market value. Again, thank you Car Wizard!!!!

Another common "dupe" to a seller that I've seen being in the trade is cooked brakes but the brake reservoir is full. Also, some sellers and cheesy lots will replace the brake/clutch pads on the legs to make them look newer and hide mileage.

Like back in 2008 I got a really good deal on a 1994 Buick Park Avenue, the seller said that the car wouldn't go into overdrive, but also didn't accelerate very well. I figured worst case scenario, GM used to put in that really crappy transmission fluid and it throws the overdrive gear, so I negotiated a really reasonable price with the price of the repairs calculated in, brought it to the shop, found out it was a throttle positioning sensor. Retired that car in 2020. I also bring my code reader with me, which can also see the code history on vehicles.

I look down to check my speed and there is a red brake light.. I'm having trouble stopping so I drive slow back to the dealership.. I call him out on it and he fixed it.. I bought it like a young dumb kid wanting a fun hot rod.. it had an oil leak, coolant leak.. neither of which I knew about til after I had bought it.. the car was a total POS.. I learned alot from that experience.. I've bought a lot of cars since and I've done a great job on what to look for

I bought an old car once and the seller had the heater cranked all the way up during all the test drive. I guess it had a big problem (maybe headgasket because there was a lot of bottles of water too )and he wanted to hide it but i didn't care i just wanted a beater for 400 €. Finally it was only a very bad valve cover gasket the spark plugs were full of oil

Take a magnet with you and put it up against the parts of the bodywork that are most likely to be hit in accidents. Magnet doesn't stick= panel bogged and repainted.

This works with most cars, but some have considerably more fiberglass than others (think Saturn). Have a Carfax and note the color of the car, unless it's been repainted, repaired panels stick out like a sore thumb. Not always bad, but it depends on who repaired them and why - that repair should show up on the Carfax history report.

@CarWizard @7:48 remember that some cars have clutchless, variable displacement compressors! Most MK5 - MK7 VW products (and probably most of their Audi platform-mates) come to mind, also many hybrid cars. And Mrs. Wizard, I'd suggest that the prospective buyers test the ability of the automatic climate control. Can it maintain a reasonably consistent temperature, when set to a normal 68-75°F on auto?

People should have a checklist to go through any car they are looking at. Look online for several versions of the idea, add your own needs/cautions to check. I mean, Mrs. Wizard is a busy woman; she can't tell us everything! :)

When I was out car shopping, I came across 4 in a row at dealerships that had timing chain death rattle on startup. When I confronted them about it #1 told me “that’s normal they all do that”, #2 just went “uhhh”, #3 argued with me and tried to pull the whole “well if you leave I can’t hold this” nonsense after I told him I wasn’t interested, and #4 was so bad it slipped a tooth after it fired and died right after the salesman started it.

@@markh.6687 Don't hate on the 2.2l eco techs. My first car an 04 Saturn vue had one. I loved that thing. Still ran like a top with 172k on it. But then I hit a curb and mechanically totaled it. Only major repair was spark plugs while I owned it

@@markh.6687 one was a 2011 GMC Acadia with the 3.6 V6, two was a 2013 Ram 1500 with a 4.7 V8, Three was a 2012 F150 with a 5.0 (in its defense it had 288,000 miles) and the one that grenaded was a 2013 Acadia that had 70,000 miles with the 3.6. A big one to watch for is a salvage or flood title. With all the hurricanes this year the auctions will be "flooded" with cars totaled for water damage. I've had many salvage titled cars with mixed results but I had access to a small family shop. One can get a car for much less than retail but once bought they own it. You likely can't trade it as dealers won't touch them and banks often won't lend on one. The nightmare scenarios are endless. Wizard speaks the truth, the title work must be straight.

I remember when I was about 19 yrs old, before I got married.. I went to this used car dealer, down the street from where, I lived.. I went to look at this nice car, I think a Chevy Caprice. LOL. I went in side to talk to one of these 3 men sitting at a table.. I asked how much such and such car was. Their reply, more than you can afford.. Now I know they were full of crap.. Plus since were I lived, I summed up that they were part of the local organize crime family.

I’ll tell you another thing that I learned about switching from a professional mechanic to a body man. Sunroofs may function and they may look great on the outside but if somebody hasn’t taken the time to clean the drains, wait till the rains come! Then you’re going to see something really fantastic inside of what should be a closed space. It’s easily done by yourself in most cases. But that light mold smell up near the headliner. I always used to say “why would somebody cut a hole in a perfectly good roof?”. But they do in cars with sunroofs I would just completely steer away from if you don’t want to eventually have a problem with it. But then again I love them in another aspect because they damn sure flow a lot of money into the body shop!

Me: "the engine is running a bit rough." Seller: "oh that's a cheap fix it just needs some new spark plugs." If someone ever tells you something is a "cheap fix," ask yourself: then why haven't they fixed it? My rule of thumb is "don't buy trouble."
