Problen with that is Volvo will eventually be forced to change that because of others manufacturers, otherwise it will lag behind. Think about it, if all manufacturers frequently change their designs making them look more futuristic as time goes by and yet still sell as many, it means that regardless of people think of that, they still buy them, which in a way means that it either doesn't matter to them, or it does and people buy them for that exact reason. Our XC90 is a brilliant car. Absolutely love it. Hugely reliable and the hybrid is good (albeit not enough miles on our model - 30). The drive mode thing is genuinely terrible though and the interface feels old now. We're a bit unsure if we want to keep it or downgrade to a smaller car or not, albeit it's just so massive and really useful. If you run it on electric-mode a lot then its great for efficiency. We've seen mid-50's, but a lot lower in winter. And actually it's quite fast, faster than you should really drive it because it's still a bit of a boat 😂 We also deliberately specified it with smaller wheels/taller sidewalls and it makes the ride better and hugely protects the alloys

I bought a T8 plug in hybrid to replace my Q7 Audi.Why did I change? Due to semiconductor shortages I couldn't get a Q7 with what was on my original car and it had only a 21 miles electric range. I got no discount on the T8 including carwow but a reasonable deal on my trade in. Corrections are this I have never got 40miles on electric. I get 30-33 . After fully charging it never says the range is higher than 33. My car is the latest 2023 car. I do a lot of short journeys so it suits me . However you dont save much money in reality while electric prices are high. The second correction is I bought the XC90 because I needed a big boot in 5 seat mode as my Q7 was good also. My wife is disabled so have to carry a wheel chair and buggy. Its stated in the vid that the Discovery boot is much bigger. Dont kid yourself. Its actually smaller . I took a tape measure. Land Rover measure their boots differently. I was told measure to the roof. Volvo to the window line. This is the reason I did not have an X5 . The boot is just too small. Good points, boot capacity, quiet, great poke when accelerating hard, well made and a handsome car. Bad points. Touch screen is a danger. Why do I have to press the screen five times to switch the heated seats off. You can use voice control of course but you do feel a wally and it doesnt always work. Sun visors are a bit deep and you hit your head on them if your not careful and finally doors do not cover the door sill so trousers and skirts get dirty exiting the car unlike the Q7. saying that I am pleased with my T8. Not going all electric as we holiday in Devon. That means next to no chargers. I have now done 2000 miles and very happy with it , Fuel consumption when battery depleted is 30-33 mpg which isnt bad considering the weight of the batteries. However its all electric range was what I wanted . Just an edit 10 months later . The car has run fault free and massage function of the seats is entertaining. Dont believe fuel consumption figures on the dash as you can get that reading 1000mpg. I agree with Matt on the air suspension. Even though it has air suspension It does crash on potholes which never happens in a Q7 with air suspension. You must use the electric as much as possible to make the economy good but dont charge at public chargers . More expensive than running on petrol. Its full of safety stuff and the blind spot lights in the wing mirrors is a great help but the car slamming the breaks on when a car passes when parking the car is not fun and perhaps I can find a way of turning it off. Would I buy another? Yes I would . Its an excellent car and knocks any Land rover product out of court on usable boot size for me anyway. Defender, Discovery , Range Rover Sport get the tape measure out. The Q7 is the better car now so I will go back to that most probably but that decision may change in three years time. I wont be going all electric. Another quick edit in July 2024 is a software update that now gives me between 40 and 44 miles on electric only which is a nice surprise.

As a former Volvo owner I am still drawn to the product out of intrigue for the newer models. I drove 740 GLE Wagon for 26 years, v-240 for 4 months, XC-90 for three years. I still like this XC-90, and the XC-60. How ever I drive a 2012 Ford Escape, low mileage. Purchased in 2017, I have only had to replace tires and change the oil. The draw of these new models has appeal but I have more sense than money these days so I'll drive the Ford to the grave like I did my 86 740-GLE Wagon.

My wife has a 2021 T8. Loves the way it looks and feels. Safety is top notch. Personally, I've grown to really hate the drive train for 2 reasons 1)The engine is only fast in "Power mode". All other modes feel like snail mode, and to make it worst, when the gear change finally happens you hear the 4-cylinder rev up which let's just say doesn't sound very luxurious, elegant, or exciting. The engine just sounds feeble compared to a 6 or 8 cylinder but it is peppy, in certain situations 2)The hybrid drive drain is not well done. The 19mile range is too low for American driving. You have to charge it almost twic ea day to try to stay on electric. What's worst, the default hybrid management is terribel and will jump to engine power too soon with even a slightly aggressive pedal push, and on top of that, it's stupid as hell and will try to jump to electric only even when you're going 75mph on the highway, which would end up draining the battery faster than you can say MISSISSIPPI 5 TIMES. Furthermore, as Matt pointed out, I wish there was a button on the steerring wheel to activiate/deactivate the electric drive only mode, but alas you have to go through 2-3 distracting touchscreen menu buttons to change that feature so you really can't practically, manually control the electric to ICE transition during daily driving.
@Wellspicedchaffinch Жыл бұрын
Sounds like you have an old enough T8 to have the worse battery (lower range), but new enough to have no driving mode selector (and maybe dodgy Google integration UI) - bad choice. Newest ones have dodgy ICE/UI but way more power and range, so are worth buying, but dear. Older ones (if you get lucky with a good one) have better UI/UX and drive mode selector - but range similar to yours (sufficient for UK). If the range isn't enough for your needs - it's a bad choice of car for you, sorry.

Another feature which they should have maintained and Included in their current and future production is the car Child Booster seat in the Centre of the middle roll. C. Mataruka: Harare-Zimbabwe

I owned this car for more than 3 years. Wonderful piece of engineering. The only annoying about it just the sound of the indicator. Sometimes it skip a beat.
@BionicRusty Жыл бұрын
The XC40 is the same. Sometimes it doesn’t come on at all and sometimes it stops mid signalling. I’ve nearly snapped the stalk many-a-time putting it ‘back on’. Took it back twice and incredibly it was fine for the workshop. 👎

Haha - same in my 2021 S60! ;)
@MrRtadams Жыл бұрын
It does that deliberately so you're less likely to accidently leave the indicator on. You may not notice a consistent beep, but the off beat means it catches your attention. Almost every detail is thought through to be safer.

Fantastic car and what a great and fair review (aside from the absence of 0-100 km/h test 🏁). Thanks Mat & Carwow: this is exactly what the XC90 is. We have the 2017 T8 version, same specs: best car ever purchased. We added wireless Carplay and wireless charging with 2 adapters (factory look) and we still have the physical button for drive mode 😉 I am so happy Volvo kept the shape and did not make changes. It is a solid car that we use 90% in EV mode and it yield 2 litres/100km average since ownership. I can’t believe in 2023 it is still the same car, but so happy, such and beautiful, solid and timeless design. The seats are so comfortable and audio performance so amazing. The gap between the 2nd and 3rd row on van mode is because the 2nd row was not all the way back (as you mentioned they are adjustable).

Its not same spec actually. This version has the upgraded battery and eletric engine. 50-60% more range and the power output went from 92hp to 140hp on the eletric motor and twice the torque. I know since I have both and it makes a big difference on daily drive. But either is great nontheless.

The XC90 should not be compared with the X5; They are not in the same category. The X7 is the ideal competitor for the XC90. The BMW, MB, and Audi competitors cannot go 40 miles on electric only. With all those features, over 40 miles of electric range, and for this price, the XC90 is the best deal in this category (in my opinion). I’ll replace my buggy 2019 Subaru Ascent with this Volvo. Thank you for the review!

I have 2 ‘grail’ pens - a Visconti HS Dark Age, and a MB 146 ‘Around the World in 80 days’ in blue resin. Both have done short haul and long haul flights and had no real issues. I do wonder if the air pressure was the cause, my Parker duofold hesitates after flights and I remove the cartridge for a minute and replace it. Seems to allow the pen to ‘burp’ and work flawlessly afterwards.

Although I also like the drive mode switching wheel in the previous generations, and the selection in a sub menu of a sub menu is a really bad design decision, I wonder how many people actually change the drive mode _while driving_? I've never done that once in any of my Volvos... I change before I start and that's it... 🤷♂
@Wellspicedchaffinch Жыл бұрын
I change it every 5 to 10 mins around town (with T8 Polestar), it depends how nerdy you are and whether you want to constantly optimise performance and efficiency/economy, which I quite enjoy doing. On a long trip - Individual wins.

was waiting for your review last year but i just went right ahead and bought one in July. and i LOVE it! after 7000km driven average is 5.3l(44mpg) which is damn nice. and that 455 hp that takes almost 3t wheicle to 100km/h in ~5 seconds is mind blowing. Also we got the late 2022 model so no google automotive and i have to say i prefer the old infotainment system

Out of curiosity, how much of the miles is done in EV mode?
@lbnewell23 Жыл бұрын
I agree the old system is much better and how stupid is the new drive mode thing. What was wrong with the scroller in the centre console. I wish they kept the old system but just put google maps in and that was it because it to me is the only advocate for the new one
Жыл бұрын
@@deansmits006 to be honest i have no idea how to check that or if i even can. but I'd say 70% is in EV mode. when i do combined trip(highway+town driving) of ~150km i average ~8l/100km on petrol only. Car had issues with hvch module(known issue with t8s) so i had to drive on petrol majority of winter. and average is still ~5.3l/100km. during the summer i was averaging 4l/100km. also we went on a road trip the other day and on EV i managed to get 89km(~55 miles) on a single charge. when you're light on the gas pedal and drive on mostly flat road it shines.

Agree on the OG Volvo Sensus infotainment system. I think it was a good bit premature to run with Google. Should have waited a couple years to mature it - and then put it into their cars when it's got the full functionality and is somewhat bug-free...

If the diesel has good towing capabilities, but the electric engine turns off to just use diesel power, I'd buy one, & I'm not a fan of Hyrbids. I'd use the combination to stroll or go out in city or short trips, but the diesel combustion for trips or towing sounds awesome for the luxury it has.

@stephencollins7714 Жыл бұрын
Outside of the Range Rover products, this is the best looking large SUV on sale. However it is really showing it’s age in other areas such as the infotainment and refinement. I drive a Q7 usually but had a 2022 XC90 for the day recently and it just felt old in comparison even though they are essentially the same age, Audi has done a better job with the refreshes than Volvo. The electric range in the hybrid is tiny in the real world and it is slow to charge. Seems that Volvo were ahead of the game with the 4 cyl engines though as others are now following suit, still prefer a 6 cyl for as long as they are available though. Shame that the price of the all electric version is going to put it completely out of reach.

@deansmits006 Жыл бұрын
Hard to say, but if you compare it against the BMW X5 45e, the Volvo is more efficient in general. 26 vs 20mpg in hybrid mode. Real world conditions apply, the usual caveat. However, Volvo did the 4 cylinder only option to make it cheaper to develop drivetrains. One basic powerplant, with a supercharged option, and hybrid option. No 6 or 8 cylinder to develop. Cheaper
