The SLR was the car that got me into cars back when I was 12. So it'll always have a place in my heart. You forget it's nearly 20 years old now yet it can still hold it's own. Quite a testament to both how good it was and how far cars have come in that space of time. But even when new, that gearbox was always its Achilles heel. I wonder if you can take one back to McLaren and ask them to correct all its flaws.

Actually the g55 amg is the closest thing to the slr regarding the engine. The share the same engine and exhaust, but the engine is detuned in the g55 amg.

Every mercedes owner of the supercharged motor knows that the SLR had a bad intercooler pump... That’s why the supercharger was disengaging. Would have been nice to see what would happen if it was running properly. Great race!

That SLR is an amazingly well built car. At track events overheating kicks in on many “big name” supercars. SLRs run the track all day without a problem and can do back to back 200MPH runs without breaking a sweat.

The only thing that let's is down is the 5 speed auto! But it's just what it was back when it was new. And Mercedes was developing the 6.2 AMG V8 to replace the 5.4 one, which got a 7 speed gearbox.

They’re not the cream of the crop super cars though, they’re half a second off the time of a bmw m8, which is literally a grand tourer. A cream of the crop would be things like the Ferrari F8, Lamborghini aventador SVJ, mclaren 720/765... and they would absolutely obliterate the SLR McLaren

Because a 992 911 Turbo S can out drag all 3 of cars you named in a standing 1/4 and yet isn’t considered “cream of the crop” C) Tire technology has come a *comically* long way from the days of Enzo’s, SLR’s and Carrera GT’s... and if we threw modern tires on them and set them around a track the performance gap would drastically diminish. My point stands, relative to todays super cars (cream of the crop or “baseline”) a SLR has no right being that fast

Matt, I think that the conventional 3rd run (i.e. most aggressive driving mode and specific gear) shouldn't be in a arbitrary gear. That run is about the very best that each car can do in a rolling start. That's would mean to me the gear with the best at-the-wheels torque, and that obviously could be different for each car.

The DBS has terrible traction though. Most road testers have struggled to do 0-60 in much under 4 seconds. It's not great off the line. Once traction isn't an issue however,, the DBS is incredibly fast. Almost as fast as an 812 Superfast. Well, that will not happen as McLaren is no an independent car manufacturer. But the SLS especially as Black Series was a marvelous car. Absolutely timeless looks as well. The GT is also a great looking car.
