Old BMW X5 v Range Rover v Porsche Cayenne: OFF-ROAD RACE!

SUV off-roading videos don’t get much better than this!
We’ve got our hands on a second-hand Range Rover, BMW X5 & Porsche Cayenne, and we’re about to put them to the test over a series of treacherous off-road challenges!
So let’s see how the three stack up. Starting with Mat in the Cayenne, it’s powered by a 4.5-litre V8 that’s good for 335hp and 420Nm. The BMW X5 is next up, with a tasty 4.4-litre V8 that can deliver 286hp and 440Nm. And then finally we have the Range Rover, which is packing a 3-litre diesel that can put down 175hp and 390Nm.
Given the age of the cars, we were able to get them for a bit of a bargain, spending just £5,000 across the three of them. So of course, you know what that means… We weren’t exactly that gentle with them!

I offroad with my cayenne (its a 958 so a lot newer), and mine has steel shocks. air only comes standard on the higher trims, unless optioned. regardless, for its size its an extremely fun and capable machine, even without air ive rarely ever had any clearance issue. going forward i will definitely be looking for one optioned with air, although they're highly sought after. hands down the best offroader ive owned.

Yeah but fair ones. Lots of people pointing out how he's always helping LR in these challenges by some sketchy methods. He needs to accept we've spotted it and start being fair. The only other manufacturer he is fair to on these vids is Suzuki, which are brilliant offroad yes but he puts Toyota and all them at disadvantages in these vids and it's getting hard to watch as it's so blatant.

I watch Mat but I'm under no illusions. He's been caught pulling every stunt in the book on these 4x4 vids and they all seem to favour one brand LR. Anyone who rates an RR higher than an LC off road needs taken with a pinch of salt. Besides the blatant LR shillery he is only fair to Suzuki in the other vids.. and he tries very hard to make sure Toyota vehicles are always at a disadvantage tyre wise or 4wd package wise. He's not long compared an older LC with the most basic powertrain package and worn road tyres against a brand new RR full package and aftermarket tyres. Also downhill decent gets you into trouble on green lanes, it gets you stuck if the decent is really rough and the surface has enough rough areas to stop the car. I don't know anyone that uses it and anywhere it would be needed like towing stuff down an incline it's deactivated. Total pointless gimmick as your foot on the brake does a way better job so I've no idea why it's even in a 4x4 offroad test.

@@amritmahotsav3378 As a first time owner of an RR I cant really answer that. Mine has been good, with no more issues than I would have on any 15 year old vehicle. In my opinion people are trying to do repairs on the cheap and without proper troubleshooting, knowledge and tools. They are a unique vehicle, standard practices do not apply and short cuts generally lead to more failures. However that being said I was referring to the ability of each vehicle in the video, It could have been a 4runner, Jeep , or pickup instead of an RR. Both the Porsche and the BMW had to be abused to make it thru the challenge and required repairs before they could be driven home. The RR could have left and driven home without repairs had they not torn the front bumper by pushing the Porsche. The BMW and Porsche are out of their element, similar to using a Beetle for the challenge. With enough speed and stupidity it would complete the course but also have finished with damage. Requiring repairs to be made before being able to drive home. Just because it has 4WD does not make it suitable for off road use.

Just to clarify...the auto on the prefacelift E53 X5 V8 models was a 5 speed unit (5HP24). I owned a 4.4i from 4 years old and for 11 years. Great car but ongoing maintenance was required to keep it that way. @@chrishart8548 2015 seems arbitrary. Still cars without direct injection after 2015. 1.3 Jazz manual should be super reliable for instance, I think only the 1.5 was direct injection.

@@bird6691 does it have lots of plastic housings for water pumps thermostat inlet manifolds etc.... All these parts are directly bolted to the hot metal parts of the engine and deteriorated over time. Hopefully the jazz is an exception.

@@chrishart8548 yeah I mean that's how cars are now, for sure shit like that is likely to break but less often than more complex and larger cars. At least the engine itself should stay running unlike the direct injection models which are screwed at 100k unless you did 5k oil changes. I drive a GE Jazz, I don't know the status of plastic on it but most of the fittings seem to be metal, haven't looked at a GK because they are overpriced in the UK imo.

This is a lineup of THEE most unreliable models from THEE most unreliable brands. This years reliability charts it's exactly these three brands at the bottom. Porsche are a disgrace now and these "reviewers" are acting like its still 1980 Porsche build quality.

@@aidenp5768 b58 is a complete heap of junk. It's top of the engine failure charts. B58 has turned out to be a disaster of a lump same as the "awarded" N47. Remappers gave up on b58 pal they are so unreliable. No idea why you'd still think B58 was a good lump when the data ahows it's a horrendous engine. Do you need a list of its faults? Also it's not a fully closed deck, that was a lie and its plasma arc weld cylinder plating that they shared with Ford is already being ditched for the next variant as its so brittle.

@@aidenp5768 and bmw are at the bottom. These exact three manufacturers are at the bottom. BMW have been hovering at the bottom since 2006 and jousting it out with Audi for the top spot in engine failure charts. Just remember mate your opinion won't change owners data. Cheers

Here in NYC where the weather is cold asf and then hot asf in the summer we’ve been seeing B58s get abused by city driving, friends with B58 with stage 3, running 9s and they’re making ridiculous power 600 easy all the way to 900. Touch streets and stop relying on the internet, no one says the B58 is unreliable your the first bull sh!ter I’ve heard say that😂
