The Volkswagen T-Roc: it's the German brand's take on the small SUV. It's got striking looks and comes in a range of eye-catching colour combinations both inside and out - but does it have the substance to match the style? I find out in this in-depth review.

Really surprised by the interior plastics. Usually every single VW has soft touch on the dashboard and upper doors. Although I must say it is pointless having a soft touch dashboard since you don't drive around touching it. It is more important to have soft touch plastics on the upper door perhaps where you would rest your arm or lower down by your leg where it touches the center panel.

VW says they did it on purpose because they didn't want T-Roc to compete with Golf. But they just went too far, interior quality is much worse than in the Polo. Soft touch plastics do matter everywhere - they look better, they're less reflective, they don't rattle or squeak and on the upper doors you may actually touch them.

Yes it's quite obvious that I don't know what I'm talking about - very much so. All the tell tale signs are there. Yeah, anyway, everyone likes it - you can speak for over 7 billion people? Well done mate, very well done. Yes, absolutely, when you dig into the nitty gritty of my comment all the signs are there that I like French cars (which of course is a very bad thing) - indeed quite obvious again. Anyway, much bigger fish to fry in life, night night now.

The interior quality is definitely something that hasn’t been touched upon properly with the motoring press and MQB-based cars. My Mk7.5 Golf interior quality is noticeably less plush than the Mk6 and Mk5 that I’ve experienced in the past - same for my parents’ Octavia RS230. The Tiguan is particularly bad and feels quite cheap - yet the Kodiaq doesn’t feel anywhere near as cheap, and has much better sound insulation and manages to feel much less hollow than other MQB-based cars.

Yes, a very helpful and to the point review. Thanks Matt. Regarding rough road capability, I've noticed that the T-Roc has relatively minimal ground clearance, in fact less than the T-Cross. I think that I understand VW's rationale but potential buyers need to be aware of this limitation.

Lars van de Velde Toyota has an major issue. Powertrain. Horrible engines and even more horrible transmissions. CH-R just won’t go comparing with T-Roc. Considering weak infotainment and other CH-R’s electronic I think strong site of CH-R is exterior look 👀 and interior quality only.

People often ask in videos, what the point of this car is. I play Golf, and at one point I had a Tiguan R-Line and a Golf R. The golf clubs didn't fit in the boot of the Golf, but they fit in the Tiguan, but the Tiguan was terribly slow (150 BHP R-Line), and the clubs had to go in the back seat of the Golf, so this T-Roc with the 445 litre boot would do the job nicely, and the 2.0 TSi is quicker than the Tiguan. So I don't wreck my back seats, or loose my license. I can still get the shopping in the boot, and enjoy a spirited drive when i'm late for my tee off time.

Actually, VW is one of the good guys, they produce some of the cleanest types of diesel around (independent ADAC tests 2017). Diesel gate was a hatchet job on VW, all car manufacturers were very economical with the truth. They all have various cheats, one of the dirtiest engines is the Renault 1.6 dci and no one cares. The original report Diesel gate...only tested 4 cars, 3 Vw's and 1 BMW...biased...hell yes.
@Cameron-ue7lu
@Cameron-ue7lu 5 ай бұрын
The reason why the dash is not soft plastic is because of SUN damage. More glass means more rays and over the years a soft dash will start to peel away, especially around the Air bag units. Harder, tougher dash means longevity. So from that point of view, it is more like a practical SUV. In fact, the harder wearing material is more expensive. But these days we want everything to look smooth and silky i.e fake and not practical.

These "crossovers" are just an excuse to jack up the price by 5 grand for a slightly bigger boot, a few extra inches of height, and a superficially beefier looking exterior. I really don't see the point of them. If you want an SUV, buy an SUV. If you don't then save yourself money by not buying a car that pretends to be an SUV but isn't.

Disagree with you on the noise in the car part, I've got the T-Roc for a couple of days a few weeks ago and the noise in the car was pretty loud, especially over 100-110km/h. I was running winter tiers and that may be a reason too but still a very big difference comparing it with my daily Golf. Except the noise you get in the car and the poor materials, T-Roc is a great car to drive and look at.

It seems to weigh in at a notch over 1400 kg, which is not that heavy to be honest. The entry Golf has around 1350 kg and the higher end versions end up at almost 1400 kg.

STOP WHINING about hard dashboard. It should never ever be touched. Why the hell should a dashboard be soft? Like really. Stop whining about that :S Dashboard should be as matt as it can be. T R - "Worst Volkswagen interior", i think you judge this car based only by some pieces of hard plastic because in the rest functionality and tech inside is the same as good as any other Volkswagen model and to show you how wrong you are again Volkswagen boss say in an interview from Geneva that the R-Line of this T-Rock which will be available from june this year gets an extra feature (optional pack) that cover the hard pieces bits of interior in leather so, your sensible girl hands will not feel those rough surfaces..

Why comments obsessed with interior quality ? As long as seats , wheel and controls are good . Most car reviews aren’t very good for me personally , I’d like to know engine design/reliability/efficiency , front wheel drive or rear wheel , in line or transverse. What moves the wheels , how suspension is designed , overhead cam single or double , timing belt or chain , diesel maintenance and extra added dpf ? Everyone is always on about interior materials? I can never find a more mechanical review except maybe Wikipedia.

depending on how you frame this car, it can be cheap or expensive. The T-roc takes elements from small cross overs like Kia Stonic, Nissan Juke, Seat Arona, Citroen C3 Aircross and Peugeot 2008. and all of them are considerably cheaper than the T-roc. But if you frame it with small SUV's(because it takes elements from those as well) like Qashqai, Ford Kuga, Peugeot 3008 and Honda CRV, i think it becomes clear the T-roc was colculated to sit in between these 2 classes.

Michael L it is a strange mix really. When I had a look at it recently in a VW dealership first impression on the outside was very positive. It really looks great and it’s by far the best design by VW in a while. Quality on the outside and door-closing was also very good. But the interior was an abrupt downsizing.. not only in terms of material quality but the design as well. It looks like the polo inside. The fabric seats look really underwhelming. The Citroën C3 is not an expensive car but it has much better seats in terms of design, looks and quality. The engine selection is also weird. They have a 1 lt petrol engine that seems a bit underpowered and doesn’t fit the exterior and general look of the car, and that spec is relatively cheap (20000-23000). On the other hand they offer only a 2 lt diesel that suits a much bigger Tiguan better. And the price for that diesel gets really expensive quickly after putting some extras on the car (27000-33000). It doesn’t seem very balanced to me.

Why do you always comment about soft-touch plastics on the dash? Like when do you ever touch your dash board? It would make much more sense to make sure the interior door panels (and handles), and transmission covers / foot wells are made with a better feeling material. These contact points you actually touch every single time you get into and out of the vehicle!
