The DSG is an amazing transmission. It’s one of the main reasons I bought a MKV GTI - I was so impressed by the technology. I enjoy driving manuals, but I think the DSG is fun to drive and it benefits from improved performance, fuel economy, and convenience over a traditional manual. VW is also continually improving it; I drove a 2013 GTI and the DSG was even smoother and more refined than my ‘08. Thanks for showing us the inner workings of the DSG!

I have an 06 Audi tt with dsg and really like it a lot . I was happy to learn that the C8 Corvette has an 8 speed DSG. I'm a guy who grew up with, and really like the standard transmission , but if you only have one car you drive daily there is a point in your life that you get tired of pushing in the clutch in stop-and-go traffic just to move ahead 20 ft. For me the DSG transmission is the best of both worlds. Sport mode regular mode paddle shift bump shift offers a lot of variety in a lot of fun without wearing out your knee. My brother-in-law had a Mazda Miata that he put 250,000 miles on with a standard transmission. He needed to have his knee replaced. I asked my sister which knew it was, she said his clutch knee.

looks like this one had the same problem as my dct box has currently. the synchromesh rings are worn out causing heavy grinding on the thin gears which are needed so the shifter rings can engage upon them. this problem is pretty common for dct transmissions because of the frequent need for oil change (every 60k km) which IS NOT specified by the manufacturer. If the mechanic over sees this and your driving style is on the sporty side the synchromesh rings will start to wear out way before you hit the 200k km. The brain of the gear box does not know if the synchro is worn so it shifts without giving enough time for the gears to line up which is something you can do with a manual box. thanks for the video this is exactly what i needed to see.

Great explanation all around. A more common preselection error would be gently accelerating to close the gap on a 2 lane road before reaching a passing zone. All indications to the computer are that the next higher gear will soon be more efficient at a higher speed. When you reach the passing zone, if traffic is clear, you step on the gas to use more power and shorten your passing time, best done in a lower gear. Also, I question the location of the gears as stated, you might check those. If 5th and 6th are run from the same shaft, there's no physical possibility of preselecting 6th. Honda claims on their DCT all even gears are separate from all odd gears to achieve the same effect. I have not looked at the DSG, but in an attempt to achieve the same task, it just doesn't make sense for any consecutive gears to use the same power shaft. Well, we hope there's a stop before reverse anyway, but not the others.

What is the actual cause of the dsg fart?
@ARentz074 жыл бұрын
@@mbulelomankonkwana8038 First, the ECU cuts timing during the shift, but fuel delivery continues for a brief moment. So, some unburnt fuel makes it into the exhaust, which is hot. VW cars are notoriously famous for their DSG (dry clutch variant) & mechatronic problems in Asian countries, especially if the vehicle was heavily used in hot weather, traffic congestions & start-stop traffic (yes, our traffic jams are horrible). It has been circulating around that the dual clutch transmission is very jerky in start stop traffic & indecisive in choosing the right gear in those circumstances. as a result, DSG tend to kaput after 6 months of usage & unfortunately it is time consuming (waiting for the parts) & cost a bomb to repair. & the problems persists not long after that. @@FDALl-ms5kg An engine is very simple. Have you seen a 2 stroke engine?. A 4 stroke engine can be made very simple too, if you look at 1920s engines they had very few components and complications. Modern engines are complex because they trade simplicity for efficiency. The higher efficiency you have, the harder it is to gain more efficiency, designs start to be cumbersone and many extra decisions have to be made to gain 0.X%. In engineering, when you want to calculate reliability you apply the formula R = e-λt. When you have multiple systems that need to work together, then you have Rs = R1xR2. In a DCT gearbox, the number of Ri(s) you have to multiply is very high. If there was no other physical solution to the problem, then it would be considered a complex but good or clever design, but because there are simpler alternatives that have less components, are more reliable, simpler to build and repair and have the same or more efficiency, the DCT can no longer be considered a complex but good solution, it's just a complex solution.

You guys mentioned how the computer sometimes wrongly predicts the next shift, but as far as I'm aware, and correct me if I'm wrong, this isn't an issue on new DSGs because they don't need to predict downshifts; If the driver tugs on the downshift paddle or suddenly brakes, the computer is able to simply disengage the clutch and deselect the higher gear, 'blip' the engine to exactly the right revs to smoothly select the lower gear, or any lower gear for that matter and then engage the correct clutch. In doing this, it can shift *fast enough*, that it's still much faster than a manual or ordinary slushbox can shift, almost as fast as it can upshift.
@Irishluckily8 жыл бұрын
What you're saying is what I've been noticing. The only time it downshifts on it's own like that is when you are driving in a lower gear's speed range for a few seconds thus giving you a better ratio

HumbleMechanic Thanks for making this video, I'm doing a college essay on the Volkswagen DSG gearbox and I found this video explained to me how it works :)

Thank you for making such a great video. I was always wondering why my DSG transmission sometimes jerks especially when I’m down shifting from 3 to 1. Also the example you mentioned were with the red light and suddenly becomes yellow and green where it actually doesn’t want you to move as you actually wanted to, I thought that was actually a transmission failure in my car but apparently it isn’t so thank you very much for the video.

Probably need to change the clutches or recalibrate them to extend the lifetime a bit.

My brother told me about the encounter with the engineer that initially had the idea of the first dsg. He described me a truly genius person that was passionned by mechanics and quite socially awkward. A little bit like a mechanic -crazy Sheldon Cooper.

When gear lever is moved to the park mode, what actions happen inside the box? Does it lock the output shaft?
@PeterB123454 жыл бұрын
There's a gear on the output shaft and the transmission sticks a pawl (piece of metal) in it.

Thanks for the awesome info. I am considering buying a wrecked 2011 Volkswagen Jetta TDI and I am trying to learn all I can. The car is an easy rebuild, but friends at a foreign auto shop said beware of the DSG Trans. I personally think it is a brilliant design, but only if totally durable.

From what I understand, the early DSG models (DQ250 6 speed wet clutch) from 2006-2010 had issues with the Mechatronics unit (brain), but that was fixed, anything from 2011 onwards has the improved mechatronics unit, a traditional manual with a clutch pedal will still be simpler, more robust, more reliable and more fun, but the current 6 speed DQ250 is relatively solid The 7 speed dry clutch DQ200, OTOH, still has issues and it really doesn’t respond well to low speed creeping in traffic, the DQ250 is a little more robust, but also isn’t a fan of creeping. Basically, you need to drive the DSG like a traditional manual transmission, don’t creep in traffic and it should be okay

Fantastic review. I've been considering getting a '24 Tiguan, but I've heard and seen so many YT videos that talk about the problems with DCTs that I'm really hesitant about buying a car with one in it. This gives me much more confidence in them. Thanks. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Question: I thought you said that the main purpose of a dual clutch transmission is to separate odd and even gears for speed, but in this video you state that the output shaft #1 had the gears 1, 2, 3, and 4. The other shaft handles the rest of the gears. And one clutch is connected to one shaft, which means that the purpose of this DGS is just wrong. What am I missing? :)
@ethelmini8 жыл бұрын
That's actually 2 shafts, one above the other, just like in the whiteboard video. 1 & 3 on the top shaft, 2 & 4 on the bottom. They didn't explain how 5 & 6 work on an extra shaft, I can only assume at least one of the first four gears acts as an idler??? Anyway, all those (big) cogs look like loads of rotating mass, you'd barely need to engage a clutch to keep feeding torque to the wheels!
@federicobarbieri8 жыл бұрын
as I understand it, the shafts that separete the odd and even gears are the input shafts (the concentric ones), not the output.

Really interesting. I think those transmission are awesome piece of engineering, and they are manual transmission with robotized clutch, not automatic. But still they feel like automatic in a sens. I want a clutch pedal and a shifter! I don't care about them being faster, they are less fun, well to me. Thank for another great video.

Quick question. When in "D", and I am stopped at the traffic light. I assume the wet clutch is constantly in friction, right ? So it is better to select "N" for longer stops than say 10 seconds ? Or do these clutches fully disconnect when I am stopped but still in "D" ? Or does that depend on the model of car we are driving ?
@SilverZ2338 жыл бұрын
I would assume so, only because it's recommended not to inch forward in a DCT doing so causes unnecessary clutch wear, generally that's caused by engaging or disengaging too slowly or too often which makes me think that the clutch is not engaged at a stop. Also i think the type of clutch used in a DCT does not allow for slip while in gear so if it didn't shift into neutral at a stop it would stall.
@Silberschleier8 жыл бұрын
afaik it depends on the brake pressure you apply. If you press the pedal firmly the DCT should go into neutral.
@unbelievabubbledave8 жыл бұрын
Very good question and something I have always wondered. I've been driving with a DSG for about three years now and always stop at the lights in D and hold it on the brake. I've assumed the car is intelligent enough to work it out (demonstrated by the mind-boggling level of engineering in this video).
@Ronald.Golleher8 жыл бұрын
He does explain this in another video, 5 Things to Never Do in a Dual Clutch Transmission or something like that. If you're fully stopped, the clutches will disengage from the engine so they and the transmission are not rotating at all.
@MrBurakOzel8 жыл бұрын
every non-manuel cars disconnect the clutch(es) while you are breaking. only not if you squeez the break pedal too little just to slow down the movement of car.
@silvio23728 жыл бұрын
You explain the engineering and the biggest problem (for me ) with DSG- that is the delay when you come off the throttle and then back on quickly. This is a HUGE engineering flaw IMO and one that has totally put me off my DSG and I will be going back to manual ASAP so I have total control.
@Spawn2233118 жыл бұрын
what are your opinions on dual clutch transmissions? are they good/reliable?
@winemeer73837 жыл бұрын
Spawn223311 Transverse 6 speeds (wet clutch) are very good. Some early versions had problems with their mechatronic units, though they have been adressed and fixed. They are very strong boxes and this have been proved from the tuning scene. Stock clutches can handle huge amounts of torque if the box has been remaped. Gears are also pretty good for a 350nm rated gearbox. They can handle almost 750-800nm before giving up. Keep in mind though that they need to be serviced every 40k miles (fluids and filter) and this is really important for gearbox life. Later 7 speeds (dry clutch) are not so reliable.( Im not talking about ttrs/rs3 dq500 units, those are 7spd wet clutch and really good) They have some issues with their clutch packs and their mechatronic units (completely different from 6spd) seem to fail often. I really hope that vw has adressed the issues.

I wish I could have my extended warranty company watch this video and understand that a clutch or dual clutch isn't a normal wear and tear item like a traditional clutch. My DSG had some weird bucking issues off of a dead stop and just simply letting my foot off the brake. You'd think the car would inch forward smoothly but it feels like the a slight bucking until you actually give it some throttle. (Honestly I'm not sure if it's a clutch thing or it would go away with a fluid change. Thanks for the videos. Always love both of you guys channels Anyways they won't cover the issues and it's on me to get new clutches. +$2k

would a triple clutch fix the problem of which gear to preselect? you"d have 1, 4, (7); 2, 5, (8); 3, 6 so no matter which gear you are in, it can preselect both gears next to it

Wouldn't you need three shafts then? Can't select two different ration gears on the same shaft. Well, you could, but you'd regret it.

nicely done guys great explanation. Scania and other truck manufacturers prooved this technology back in early 2000's and it takes a while for the costs to come down enough so the price sensitive consumers in the car market will pay for it. then it takes off and it gets mass produced. It is the same for most of the tech we see in cars today.... Common Rail Injection systems? Cummins PT system in 1954. MVT and Vtec ... Cummins again in the early 60's U used to work on all of that gear in the early 90's and it was great to finally see them all appear in the market place from 2,000 on!
