To be honest the game (In my eyes) looks fantastic. The code will inevitably come to make it fantastic. I think STERN just royally Flubbed the release. Leaked images killing hype - Poor gameplay trailer killing hype - Odd and uninspired callout recording video killing hype. The professional trailer they released was the only uptick in hype I saw on pinside because it was just about the only part of this release that was professional.

The leak did kill it for me initially, so I hope Stern finds out who did it and fires / bans them. The damage wasn't too great though as they released the gameplay soon after the leak. I liked the gameplay, but felt too many other elements (mostly covered by Cary) didn't live up to my hopes.

I like that team Elwin is attempting to make different styles of games. He’s said he does not like upper playfields, but wanted the challenge of taking it on and building a fast diverter. I appreciate that it’s not a game that copycats previous installments. That said, this one seems like their weakest.

It`s a pinball machine. If you put a steel ball on a table and the floor is level, it will not roll like it does in a pinball machine. A table is great to put a dinner plate on.

Medieval madness castle 🏰 destruction, Jurassic Park Trex eating ball, and demogorgan mode are best moments. Little disappointed Jaws didn't eat the ball considering Elwin team made Trex work well. In the movie Jaws the shark was eating people so I figured that the shark would eat balls. Not sure why he scrap that design 🤷

My favorites: Stargate- ship pops out of the pyramid NBA Fastbreak- shooting the ball in the hoop on the backboard Pub champion- jumping rope Rocky and Bullwinkle- pulling something out of his hat Jurassic park premium- getting the ball in the T-Rex mouth Addams Family- Thing grabs the ball Munsters- Spot pops out from under the staircase F-14 Tomcat- getting the flashing lights to go off on the top (I own this one it’s still my favorite!) Twilight Zone- too may to name but I love the magma flippers

My favorite moment is in Godzilla when I am playing Mechagodzilla multiball and drained to the last ball and I have 10 seconds to hit the right spinner when the dude calls out "give him a knuckle sandwich!" and you hit the spinner and on the LED you get to see silver confetti and the back box starts flashing and you know that you are Terror of Mechagodzilla qualified. That is my favorite moment. ... but wait... I still have to make it to level 4 in to play Terror of Mechagodzilla Wizard Mode. Hit the scope and collect that Power-up and then shoot thru the building!!~ I have to say that just qualifying for Terror of Mechagodzilla is the best... but... Godzilla has a lot of special moments.

I observe this issue continually in modern mass manufactures all over the US. Whether it be automotive, user tech, advertising, toys, and of course now pinball, manufactures are SCARED TO DEATH to do anything out of their comfort zone and that they aren’t SURE will be widely accepted. Just take a look at the vehicle lineups for different car brands. There are very few if any that stand out for something radical, unique and outside the box. I feel exactly what you mean when talking about the “moments” in a machine. There is a huge difference between a “moment” and a “gimmick” and I would consider a lot of what gets packaged into modern stern games as “gimmicks.” Whether it be the bobble head mini Deadpool, the Popping up of a shark, or anything else in a modern stern, it feels like it was just put there to make the audience point their finger at it the first time they see it and go “huh that’s neat” instead of being an integral and unique part of the gameplay. Some excellent examples I can think of are the Phurbas in The Shadow, the satellite in Sega’s Goldeneye, the Cryo-Claw in Demolition Man, The Time Expander in Doctor Who, among many many others. Those features are things that always wow players, are very visually interesting, add a challenging layer to the gameplay, and ABOVE ALL are integral features to the overall game and your scoring as a whole. I think the beauty of human creativity is being able to create a spectacle or “moment,” by learning through the trial and error process. Observing over time what did work and what didn’t work, and always experimenting to try and strike gold. However, if everyone is too scared to be creative and too scared to step on anyone’s toes, then we as a society will become bland and uninspired, only mimicking what others do. Thank you Cary for your insights and opinions, and not being scared to share your critiques. These videos and your talents are an inspiration. Thank you.

I played the premium and it was fun to play. Need more time to determine if it is a buy. But the shots were fluid and fun. The upper play field would drain immediately for me though. There was an easy extra ball award to shoot in the video mode which was cool. Being able to catch the ball on the middle right flipper was new for me and a nice opportunity to stop and scan the playfield for what to work on next

Whether I like a theme or game layout the pricetag makes all of them a "no". Stern and JJP really made pinball collecting a rich man's hobby. When I started buying they were $1500-$2500. $8k to $10k is larceny considering how much the games lack in comparison. They used to complain about the DMD on Terminator taking away from PF gameplay..now it's far worse.

Dreyfuss should take a lesson from Ernie Hudson on recording callouts. His “SUPER TRIPLE JACKPOTTTT!!!!” in Ghostbusters has me smiling every time. I think all your concerns are fair but I’m going to wait to pass judgement. When Bond came out, the code was bare and the theme did nothing for me. Now it’s one of my favorite Sterns. It just took deeper code and the game “clicking” with me. As for best pinball moments…it is hard to describe how incredible The Addams Family multiball “its showtime!!!” moment was when the game first appeared in arcades. Just incredible. Its been matched and surpassed since but that was an iconic moment for a lot of players. In newer games, if I was going to show a non pinball player a cool moment, it would be the Godzilla building collapsing for multiball. I also enjoy when Stranger Things Premium goes to the Upside Down with the UV lighting etc at my local arcade.

I owned a Bally 8 Ball machine. Called it the drain game and it had no moments got rid of it 25 years ago for 500 bucks in great condition. I know they are thousands today but I still do not regret selling it. Had a the Williams Black Knight moments with the Magna-Save and multi-ball got rid of it 25 years ago when I rolled it over. I regret that one because I could buy bigger displays today. Own the Game of Thrones premium for 7 years now. Moments everywhere, Winter, Hand of the King. Super Jackpots. Still have not got to the Iron Throne after 7 years no interest in getting rid of it. I have the Jurassic Park Premium with the expensive over priced topper and I agree it is the T-Rex throwing the ball is the moment. Tournament players aside; I think there are two other types of pinball machine players out there. The first is the individual who plays for the toys, gimmicks, and the like. The other are those who are captivated by the theme. I'm one of those players who enjoys pinball for the theme, artwork, and sound effects. An example is Bally's Embryon. There are no super exciting "moments," if you will. However, it's the bizarre sci-fi theme that captivates the player and brings them into that world.

Godzilla Premium definitely has plenty of moments - but I agree that they need to make the shark a lot more of a big deal in the actual gameplay, as you don't see it most of the time in Jaws Premium. I personally think the Shark Hunter minigame is a fun addition and something I'd like to see more of (I realize the "serious" pinball players want nothing that takes you out of constant pinball flow, but I like little gimmicks like this). Honestly my biggest gripe with Sterns (and Jaws is no exception) is the lazy design of the LCD video elements - compared to Jersey Jack and some others, who put a lot of thought and care into the video elements, Stern is often just stringing together video clips with simple type overlays and calling it done. That's definitely most of what Jaws has so far.

100% agree with your thoughts. Not interested in the theme in the first place. Never really liked those movies. Then pictures came out and I was like...not again. Like Godzilla(which I think is just Ok), it has a completely empty center of the playfield. I'm not a fan of those tables with shots only on the sides and the back. That's a reason why Godzilla is not a 1st tier game for me. At least, the shot wrapping around the magnet is fantastic. On Jaws, didn't see a shot that as a kinetic little something. The right mini flipper is interresting cause you can hold the ball and shot the targets. But, another old school thing. Drop targets that hide a RUBBER band. Come on, so old school. Please use drops to hide a path, a lock, a vuk, etc...Then you can clearly see all the thoughts going into points strategy. Like you said, it's more for tournament or strategy players. I prefer games with more linear path towards the end and where points can be a secondary objective. JP is the best for this in my opinion from KE. Here are my thoughts, but I know I'm in the minority not liking that much Godzilla. So I may be wrong about jaws and I not played it obviously.

When I first saw it, I thought it was a Multimorphic. There's very little in the bottom 2/3 of the machine. Jaws doesn't eat the ball?!? And this from the guys that made a T-Rex eat and thrash a ball around before spitting it out. They've done worse (I'm looking at you, Led Zep), but with this IP they could have done so much better. Watching the gameplay, I got the impression that it was slowed down too much due to all the trapping shots and video modes. Disappointing, but I will still play it in the wild. I want to be wrong. Stranger Things grew on me, so there's hope.

Pretty funny to complain about an overused clip from a 10 minute clip in software version "not released anywhere yet". So weird that people seem to want a game based on Jaws, a 1975 slow burn thriller, to somehow play like it's a marvel explosion fest. It's gonna be hella fun, and might even have different pacing than the 8 million games that alrrady exist. If you think this doesnt play enough like old balley williams, go play those.

Agree with your take here Cary. I had a spot for a first run premium and let it go after seeing the gameplay video. Overall the game just feels meh to me. The shots are great I'm sure and it will play well but it just didn't grab me or wow me in any way. Jaws to me is about the unknown and suspense. I didn't get any sense of suspense in this game. The shark pops up from the boat and just sits there until you bash it. I wanted times where the shark attacks from no where and there's a jump scare moment or at least have the shark on some sort of timer where it doesn't just sit there like a trained dolphin waiting for you to bash it. Seems like a step back from Godzilla to me for sure. I will be watching the gameplay stream this week and reserve the right to change my mind but for now that's where I'm at.

Jaws does seem like a promising game, considering Keith Elwin designed it but I think we need to wait for the code to catch up before we can really judge the game as it is. Also it feels more like a homeowner's game rather than a location game considering how difficult it's gonna be.

@juniorjr. true but at $terns prices it's absolutely ridiculous you have to fix/finish the game for them with mods. Look at other companies in the price range or even lower. Look at TCM and Looney Tunes, custom sculpts and toys. The Jaws game just kinda looks cheap im my opinion compared to others. Labyrinth is loaded and has so much for the money. If their prices for these games were lower than yes I'd be fine with buying one and modding it. As it stands though it's asinine.

“The power of the sun in the palm of your hand!!” Now that’s a moment! The butt hurt fan boys in the comments are cracking me up! As a tournament player I see your point. However, there are certainly many of us who also appreciate those moments. The problem is that moment, seen 1000 times, loses it’s impact, and then you’re just waiting 10 seconds for the damn building to come down. 😂. Great stuff as always. We shall see!

Your reaction to this gameplay video is valid. Theres nothing wowing in this game. No physical ball lock for mult ball!!!??? What??? Maybe it’s just me but I think virtual ball locks suck. Physical ball locks are such an easy way to make a moment in any pinball game. They missed out on that opportunity here because there are NO other wow moments in this game. I think a ball lock tied into a video with the shark pulling down the yellow buoys could’ve easily been a good pinball moment. Sigh…. I’m sure Jaws will be fun to play but there’s no real pinball magic in this game or any real wow moments. Very underwhelming release for the Elwin team. Very disappointing.

With the cost of everything now of days, you really need a theme that talks to you and keeps you coming back. Im a big fan for audio and call outs. Yes, the flo of the game as well. As of now, this game doesn't do it for me. If it speaks to you and this is your theme, go get it... it's your money, you work for. Spend it, how you like.

I saw the callout recording session earlier. When I did, I was wondering if it was just dry humor, because the zero interest in making the callouts was actually funny. If that was it, it is NOT funny, just awful. I have been waiting so long for Keiths next game. When it was confirmed to be Jaws, I felt just sad. I hoped that awful theme was put on some other designer. So far, the machine is a dissapointment, but hopefully it is fun to play. Iron Maiden and Godzilla are my favourite machines. Next time make something fun with endless possibilities please. Example: Futurama or Animal House.

I feel like this is largely the opinion of many on pinside as well. Something is off with this pin, nobody has quiet yet figured out exactly what it is.. but we all feel it.

I think a LOT of it is the shark is so underwhelming it pops out you bash it and it goes back in. The entire pin in based around "JAWS" and the shark on the pin feels wasted.

Interesting video, it appears it has started quite a discussion, which is likely what you were aiming for. I thought maybe we would see a reduction in these type of videos, since there shouldn't need to be a rush to judge as Jaws will be readily available for whoever wants to purchase one. I'm personally glad we are past the buy sight unseen or miss out phase of the hobby. This type of video seems to be all we get for new releases, as most content creators tend to lose interest shortly after launch. Not a judgement and it's likely more of a reflection of the viewers than the content creators themselves.

Also not overly excited. Will play on location. No desire to own at home at the moment. Glad to be looking elsewhere. Game seems forced. And it's a suspense thriller theme... shouldn't it build? It gave Elwin Jaws under the boat in about 20 seconds...

@CaryHardy sounds like you've said that before... lol! but i agree with your review completely. The shots will feelng great but man.. those call outs... these are bad as hearing whats in a jjp game. These actors are spending way too much time infront of slot machines as their 'gaming' reference material. ...
