Casa das Canoas / Oscar Niemeyer

'Casa das Canoas' in Rio de Janeiro has been Oscar Niemeyer's (1907 - 2012) residence. In this small project the famous brazilian architect defines an effective synthesis of his poetics. This small building with its beautiful organic shapes represents a great example of his idea of architecture. An idea in which the so-called 'free plan' (a legacy of Le Corbusier's lesson) reaches a maximum expression with the structure that appears totally detached from the facades.

Starting model credits:
Residence of architect Oscar Niemeyer, designed and built between 19951 and 1953 at Canoas road. It is based on the 'as built' plans made available by the 2018 research project 'Brazilian houses of the 20th Century, lead by Beatriz Santos, Ph.D., from the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
