'Casablanca' is the source of so many quotes still in common use today, including 'Round up the usual suspects', 'I'm just a poor corrupt police official', 'Of all the gin-joints...', the oft-misquoted 'Play it again, Sam', 'Here's looking at you, kid', and, of course, 'This looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship'. I'm glad you recognized ingrid Bergman as Ilsa. She played the missionary Greta Ohlsson in 'Murder on the Orient Express'. My favorite bit is the German couple practicing their English: 'What watch is it?' 'Ten watch.' 'Such much?' In German, 'Uhr' means both 'hour' and 'watch'. Louis dumps the bottle of Vichy water in the trash when he realizes what he's holding. Vichy was the seat of the puppet government set up by the Nazis to control France.

The scene where the bar patrons sing "La Marseilles" to drown out the Germans is especially poignant when you know that many of the extras and supporting actors in the film (including the actress who played Yvonne) were Europeans who themselves left their homelands to escape German invasion. A lot of the tears you see onscreen were real.

An irony on top of that was the casting of Conrad Veidt as the Nazi Major Strasser. Veidt was one of the greatest actors and stars in German films, going back to the silent era. He was fiercely and outspokenly anti-Nazi, even before they took power. When they took control in 1933, he immediately left Germany, first going to England, later to the USA, where he often played Nazis.

The young Bulgarian girl isn't propositioning Rick: Renault likes to use his position to sleep with women. He has told her he will give her a visa if she sleeps with him. That is what the young Bulgarian girl is explaining to Rick. And she is distraught about cheating on her husband with Renault to save their lives. It's one of the very many corruptions that are happening in Casablanca. The scene is important because it strikes close to home to Rick right now, and it's his first move toward becoming the Rick he used to be.

You are remembering right about the cartoons! Warner brothers made cartoons, and sometimes they used likenesses of famous actors who were under contract to the studio, such as Humphrey Bogart, the star of this film, and Peter Lorre, the bug-eyed actor you mentioned. By the way, the other characters you were trying to remember were Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, and the Roadrunner!

Humphrey Bogart was frequently spoofed in the old Warner Brothers cartoons. In the Bugs Bunny cartoon with the little penguin, he kept cropping up asking, "Can you help a fellow American down on his luck?". The character you're thinking of was named Mugsy, and he was modeled more on James Cagney than Bogart.

I first watched this movie when I was around 20/21 years old. I was in the car on my way up to our family's cabin, just visiting for a few days. The drive up there is around 3-4 hours long and my stepdad's old car had those little individual tv screens on the back of the front headrests you could put DVDs into. I had rented Casablanca because people always said it was such a great classic movie and a must-watch in life. I really do need to rewatch it now that it's been over a decade since I first saw it and I don't remember a ton, but I do vividly remember thinking at the end that I completely understood why it was considered to be those things. Lovely film.

Casablanca has been imitated, parodied and copied thousands of times over the years. It's that good. Hi, K.S.O. Thank you for this one! _Casablanca_ is a work whose themes, music, proto-film noir style, and quotes - the quotes! - are so prevalent in popular culture that it is all but impossible to _not_ know of them before seeing the movie for the first time. Indeed, I had already known the plot, characters, storyline, ending and theme song through cultural osmosis _twenty years_ before seeing _Casablanca_ for the first time. All the same, it is one thing to recognise this film for its composite elements through references/allusions and another thing entirely to see the very same bits and pieces interact with one another as a whole in a moving picture. The visual and cynical elements of film noir - as coined by French film critics in the mid-1940s, and becoming a widespread term by 1955 - can be observed in _Casablanca_ , presaging the doubts and fears of post-WW2 America (ranging from mob crime, the Red Scare (cf. Joseph McCarthy) and police corruption; much like the noble qualities of the illicit business man Rick is contrasted by the corrupt prefect of police, Capt. Renault, the next waves of film noir, which featured private detectives and criminals as their leading characters, helped form moral ambiguity for American movie characters (lots of grey personalities against a black-and-white moral background). It is a style that is so easily recognisable, emulated as often as it is parodied, that we need not know it by its historical term to immerse ourselves in it (examples of neo-noir include _Chinatown_ (1974), _The Man Who Wasn’t There_ (2001) and the film adaptation of Frank Miller’s _Sin City_ (2005) - the last one I warmly and thoroughly recommend). Best regards

26:28 KSO, right here Rick is looking back at Carl and giving him a dirty look because Carl had gone around and told everybody, like the kissing Sasha, the good deed Rick had done helping that young couple to win money to get out of Casablanca. Another humorous moment! 😁 Casablanca is not only a romance story, but a war movie too. My mom and grandmother saw Casablanca a couple of months after it came out in early '43 while my grandfather was overseas in the war, and they said the audience was loudly cheering along, applauding during many scenes like Laszlo leading the French national anthem. And Louis telling his men to "Round up the usual suspects" near the end brought the house down according to my grandma and mom!! The war weighed heavy on everyone's mind so this movie was a real jolt of patriotism like when Rick joined the fight at the end and started that iconic "...beautiful friendship". Before the war and this movie coming out, most Americans had never heard of Casablanca the city. That changed when US President Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Churchill, the host nation Morocco sovereign Sultan Muhammad V, and with Free French Generals Giraud and Charles De Gaulle (De Gaulle the one whose signed the 'letters of transit' in the movie and who would later became president of France), and all met at the so-called Casablanca Conference to discuss Allied war plans, which was heavily covered by the media at the time. The nationwide release of "Casablanca" coincided with the news coverage of the conference that occurred in mid Jan 1943, and a lot of people went to see the movie. Definitely, play it again K! Watch it again someday to catch more nuances, and watch closely the dynamic when Louis shuts down Rick's club after the French anthem sing-along. It was a funny moment in the theater back then. A couple more good, Bogart B&W classics, "The Maltese Falcon" (1941) premiering only 2 months before the Pearl Harbor attack, and "To Have and Have Not" (1944) another romance-war movie where Bogey starred with his future wife, Lauren Bacall. The later kinda ties with Casablanca a bit because it's set in the French territorial island of Martinique in the Caribbean during the war. ✌😎

Warner Brothers definitely did cartoons, and Humphrey Bogart was one of the most imitated actors by comedians, impressionists, cartoons, etc. So you absolutely have seen someone or something doing a "Bogie" impression. (he's often referred to just as "Bogart" or "Bogie". If you say to someone "Do Bogie", they will probably do quotes (or misremembered quotes) from this movie ("Here's looking at you, kid". PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do some more old film reactions. They generally have better character development and better storylines than a lot of modern day films, at least in my opinion, anyway. I’d like to suggest the following, to name just a few: “Now, Voyager” also staring Paul Henreid (Victor Laslo in this film) and Claude Rains (Captain Louis Renault), “Lawrence Of Arabia” (which includes Rains in one of his later roles) and is my favorite film of all time because it features great acting by all concerned, a great character study, great cinematography, and a wonderful score. Peter O’Toole plays the lead in a role for which he should have won an Oscar, “The Life Of Emile Zola” which starred the great Paul Muni and is a biography about the French writer and his involvement in the infamous Dreyfus Affair, “Notorious” directed by Alfred Hitchcock and staring Ingrid Bergman (again) and Cary Grant, “Goodbye Mr. Chips” (1939 version) staring Robert Donat (one of my favorite actors of all time) and Greer Garson in a film about a teacher and which earned Donat a well deserved Best Actor Oscar over stiff competition, “Random Harvest” starring Garson and Ronald Colman about a man who loses his memory during the war and the woman who loves him, “Laura” a great film noir murder mystery staring Dana Andrews and Gene Tierney, “Twelve Angry Men” starring a great cast, including Henry Fonda and Lee J Cobb which is a great courtroom drama, or I should say jury room drama, and my second favorite film of all time - “2001: A Space Odyssey”which is a thought provoking science fiction film. Omg! There are so many other films I could mention, but those will do for a start. 😁

As others have said, Humphrey Bogart (Rick), Sidney Greenstreet(the big guy in the white suit who owned the other club) and Peter Lorre(the little guy with the big eyes and distitctive voice) were all imitated in many many cartoons along with many film icons of the era. Ingrid Bergman was the female lead who was so beautiful. Some of the actors playing refugees, were actual refugees from the Nazis. This came out during WW II when Hollywood was telling uplifting stories of sacrifice for the greater good to keep moral up.

Cartoons with Peter Lorre ( Ugarte ) impersonations: popular in the 1940s and 1950s (Bogart, too), he was a successful actor, who played many excellent character roles. Worth looking them up, as they tend to be gangster, horror or thrillers.

Capt. Renault is charming as anything, but he is really sleazy when it comes to very young women. “A visa problem” is his staff’s code for a pretty girl that he could pressure into bed in exchange for clearing up said visa problem. That’s why his response to the phrase was “Show her in.” The young Bulgarian recent bride was so young that she might have been too young for Rick’s bar. So, he is charming and funny, but he can make your skin crawl if you think about it.

Yes Warner Bros. produced the Merry Melodies and Looney Tunes cartoons and often in the '40s they would put caricatures of their stars in them including Humphrey Bogart and Peter Lorre who are in this film. Usually Bugs Bunny is in there too. They're also in the 1941 "The Maltese Falcon" along with Sidney Greenstreet (the large man). This is the most iconic film noir.

Warner Brothers were probably the most prolific producers of cartoons from the '30s into the '50s. And it's not a coincidence that the voices sound familiar because they often used voice impersonations of popular performers for their animated characters. And I am impressed that you recognized Ingrid Bergman from "Murder On The Orient Express" even though "Casablanca" was over 30 years earlier. In case it was too subtle - though that's hard to figure - Captain Renault's sideline is, let us say, "romancing" attractive young women who need one favor or another like, for instance, an exit visa. And to clarify two points anyway, the young lady that asks for Rick's advice knows nothing about the stolen papers and Sam never knew that they were hidden in his piano. Lastly, it's not always necessary to overthink the plot and get too far out ahead. You can just sit back, watch, and see what happens.

Looney Toons, typically with Bugs Bunny, featured Humphrey Bogart, although Humphrey wasn't actually doing his own voice. Dave Barry was the voice actor who portrayed him, and he did a great job! Half of the dialog in this movie is quoted in Looney Toons cartoons all throughout their existence, as well as the French National Anthem, and As Time Goes By also. One of the greatest and most quoted movies of all time.

I think the cartoon character she’s thinking of might be Rocky. Very short mobster boss in a trenchcoat and a gigantic fedora with a Bogart like appearance and voice. I always considered him one of Bugs Bunny’s more dangerous adversaries; Elmer Fudd and Yosemite Sam were too silly to be much of a threat, but Rocky actually had a serious air of menace to him that made it all the more funny whenever he got outsmarted.

Rick hints at how dangerous their situation is when he tells Renault that she's Victor's wife and probably has information the Germans would like to know. It's actually worse; if the Germans knew she was Victor's wife they could grab her and threaten to torture or kill her if Victor won't cooperate. As long as they think she's just a girlfriend, she's relatively safe because the Germans would figure he doesn't care about her that much,

Often when reviewing films, reading the book it's based on or about the time it was made or what is shown or about the film-maker, like Michael Curtiz etc., makes the film more interesting, sts even necessary to know what's going on. A couple of ideas about this film: Hollywood often produces 'double whammies', two similar successful movies, and Casablanca (Curtiz)/To Have and Have Not (Hawks) as well as The Egyptian (totally awesome ancient Egypt book written by a well-known fellow Scandinavian, Mika Waltari, who wrote many classic historical novels) by Curtiz/ Land of the Pharaohs by Hawks (with Joan Collins) are just a couple. Also the Swede Ingrid starred in Hitchcock films, like Notorious and Under Capricorn, as well as her husband Roberto Rossellini's Italian films. Casablanca got a homage in Woody Allen's film Play It Again, Sam and Neil Simon's parody Cheap Detective. Other great Hollywood directors are, e.g., Nicholas Ray (Rebel Without A Cause) and Vincente Minnelli (Under the Clock).

The song became more famous because of Casablanca. Many famous quotes from this movie that trickled down through the generations: "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world...she walks into mine." Notice right after that he NEVER said "Play it again Sam." That's a bogus lie many said as a misquote that people actually believe he said in this movie that HE DID NOT. "Here's looking at you kid."
