From my understanding, Tim Burton wanted this movie to be an example of how the most normal seeming people can be monsters. Edward might’ve been different and an outcast, but he was kind and gentle and would never hurt anyone. Meanwhile these gross caricatures of an American dream neighbourhood wearing bright clothes, living in nice houses were doing nothing but gossiping, lying, nearly sexually assaulting at one point and when Edward tried leaving to avoid causing more damage, *they* chased *him.* It’s exaggerated for the sake of the movie but it really highlights how backwards our idea of “dangerous people” can be

My girlfriend from too many years ago has a small part in this film. She's one of the camping friends who gets out of the van when Kim comes home and says she's tired and wants to get home and take a shower. I drove her to the set and got to watch her scene get filmed although I was way back by the craft table. They finished around 2 in the morning When she went for the tryout she had just finished filming a scene for the TV show The New Leave it to Beaver and was just in regular clothes and not made up and she said all the other girls trying out were in glamour mode and said she got the part because she looked like a girl exhausted from being out camping. I loved her story.

I have a love/hate relationship with this movie. I'm 33 now but I've been watching it all my life and even as a very young child, I still felt the emotion. It's a tough one for me to watch often. It's an extraordinarily painful, I feel empathy with such strength that it rips my heart to shreds. I'm about to start the reaction but I'm already teary, goosebumps are here. He's by himself for so long that she ages to an elderly woman and lives a full life but still loves him. And he loves her. Even after decades, the snow is for her. Always.

That's a sad common strife for men. Indeed, some philosopher once said something like what makes a boy a man is often the wound that never heals from deeply loving a woman who stands beside another.

It's not how I interpreted the snow tbh... He loves sculpting etc and it brings him joy, but I don't think it follows necessarily the snow is always for her only. I don't think it makes sense to assume that 60+ or so years after this, when they haven't seen each other, they still love each other. It doesn't work that way, I think it's more sympathy and good memories.

Edward also represents the role of the artist in conventional America. Anyone who is dark and "different" is at first, a curiosity to simpletons living in a pastel world. The citizens then take advantage of his talents and feel "special" by associating with him. But when he is pushed too far by their corrupt nature and rebels, it turns them against him and he is exiled.

Alan Arkin and Dianne Wiest are my favorite parts. He's so clueless and she's so accepting, and they both just try to do their best by Edward. Alan Arkin is always endlessly charming (check him out in The In-Laws 1979) and Dianne Wiest is an iconic 80's mom (Lost Boys is another excellent choice for spooky season).

I cried and cried so hard when I first saw this at the time of it's release and even now, knowing so well what's coming, it's always so moving. Johnny Depp conveyed all the emotions with just his eyes and maybe 10 lines of softly spoken dialogue, if that. Amazing. And then there's Burton's stunning visuals of a heightened reality that's so immediately compelling and masterfully done. Knew you'd enjoy this one, fun to watch with you!

It's about society not knowing how to accept or understand anything different to what they are used to. Try to put it in a box that fits in with you and you're idea of normal, when in fact there are so many different types of normal. I really love this film. Johnny is absolutely heartbreaking and fragile in this role. This was also one of Vincent Price’s last performances, as the inventor. So many moments in this film just get me right in the heart. It’s about the Other, the different one, the outsider. And the essentially innocent. I loved your discussion afterwards. Tim Burton has such a way of delving deep and creating these beautiful worlds. I’m disabled, I have mental and physical health issues that affect everything…the issue of inclusiveness, of empathy and consideration…it is very complex, and l love the way this film brings these subjects up in a fairytale way. Lovely. Much love hunni❤️

I had a feeling you would really like this one. I feel like you hit the nail on the head of what the story was trying to convey when you pointed out how beautiful Edwards garden was. We see the hideous ugly scary castle and think it’s going to be bad and then when we walk inside it’s beautiful. Just like Edward. Outwardly people were scared but he had a beautiful soul.

Johnny Depp was also in the Corpse Bride and Tim Burton's version of Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass. I'm pretty sure he was in others too. I think their minds might work in similar ways, tbh. This movie is the epitome of "never judge a book by it's cover" and selfless love and I adore it. ❤ He said yes because he took what the sleazy woman said at face value. He's too innocent to know what it was she was after. She's the worse person in this whole movie. Well, her and the boyfriend. Great reaction!

It's always interesting to see the interpretations various people pull from Tim Burton films. I do enjoy them and find value in them, even when my own interpretation differs. Being different does not negate those perspectives, but says something about what the contrasts actually have in common. My own view is that Edward was a pure spirit, angelic in a sense. He saw life as beauty and acted in order to remove the dross to reveal the obscured beauty inherent in all things. It's like Peg had gone up to the Pearly Gates and brought an angel back down to the tawdry suburbs. He just couldn't live in our corrupt world. The people of that world took advantage of him, made demands, and couldn't understand who or what Edward was, so it was always destined to be tragic to force Edward to live there. Eventually, he 'goes back up', to return to his 'heaven', but continuing to manifest his vision of beauty. In a way, the story is not so tragic, because Edward is not corrupted by the world outside his castle and, though he couldn't quite keep the girl, he captures the girl's heart. It's always about love. The lonely inventor sees something in the pre-Edward, holding that cookie heart up to it. The inventor pours his love into the upgrading and teaching to make Edward come to life. And eventually the girl who had captured his heart tells him she loves him. And Edward is so pure a spirit, that hearing the sincere expression of love is enough for him, enough to sustain him afterwards. I understood your concern that this would be some sort of horror film, and I wished I could reassure you before your watching it that it's a beautiful story about a sweet being. Movies are a visual medium; the visual can be presented as representative or as contrast to the truth. This film presents visuals as superficial and often misleading. Courage is needed to test our perceptions. Is it an ugly, threatening handicap? Or is it an interesting, creative diversity? It all comes down to what you do with it; it's who you are and how that motivates you. I love this film. I love your response to it.

I love how insightful you are with this movie. Oh and at the beginning you were thinking of Sweeney Todd (the barber one). Tim Burton has a very distinct style but this was one of his early ones; I think only Beetlejuice came before, maybe? So this was new at the time and not like now, where you can just look at an image and go, "Oh, that's a Tim Burton movie." He does work with Johnny Depp and Wynona Rider a lot.

Great reaction and analysis KSO. This film is truly rom-tragic story. I really loved how they explore the theme monster vs mankind; as you see, the neighbors literally liked him when he was useful and hated him when he made mistakes due to him being socially inept. In my opinion, The mother, Kim, her brother and his creator were the only ones who showed him any kindness or respect. I must recommend Beetljuice which stars Wyona Reid (Kim) and Disney Channel’s Zombies trilogy, which is a Romeo and Juliet story about a cheerleader and a zombie. 🧑🏻✂️👐🏻👩🏼👵🏻🖤💔❤️‍🩹

I understand where you're coming from about using the word disability, but I have heard and now understand the explanation from a blind KZbinr named Molly Burke. Disabled is the correct term because it is a simple description of fact, and we're not trying to tiptoe around disabled people as if they're fragile or unaware of their own lived experiences. There is an ability they lack, and it impacts their lives every day by making certain things more difficult (mostly thanks to how society is not set up inclusively, as you mentioned), so it IS a disability. She explains it way better and makes amazing content, if you want to check her out.
