I remember my dad bought a 1989 580K Case in something like 1993, and ended up having an issue in the the 4bt cummins motor, he ended up tearing the whole damn thing down on our concrete driveway one weekend, then put it all back together with a new piston and honed cylinder walls. Ran like a top till he sold it in 2016. (for about the same amount he bought it for back in 1993) He still loves the older 580 cases, He swears by em to this very day as the best damn backhoe built. Good nostalgia.

I am sure I said it before, but I was fortunate to work with a very experienced man, he was very strict, but fair and I learned so much. the salary was small, but what he taught me can never be learned from books and school and dealerships. Thank you Hans, you will always be remembered with respect.

The “kid” probably got sweet talked by a dealership. If that’s the case he will look back with serious regrets one day. Youth is wasted on the young. When you get my age and have enough wisdom to make good decisions you don’t have the youthful energy and strength to get it done. Our country is in such pitiful condition that a young buck that’s willing to make smart decisions can go a long way because so few young people are worth the oxygen that they breathe anymore. That’s just a sad fact. A local tech school here says that 50% of their graduates are washing out within their first year. He said two things get them fired. 1. Smartass attitude and 2. Cell phones... they can’t put their phones down long enough to get anything done. I’ve had a shop at my house for the last 15 years and I still work alone because I don’t have time for a bad attitude and I’m not competing with some kid’s cell phone. My son has a career in the Marines so it’s just me. I’ll just go until I can’t anymore.

Babysitting guys working for me was one of the biggest reason I quit being a lead mechanic / service manager for an equipment dealer to start my own service truck....I told my old boss I'd rather be out in a storm, laying in the mud under a piece of equipment with hot oil leaking out on me knowing all I had to do was rely on myself to get the work done than deal with any more people problems and BS from management over me.

I’m glad you never got into contract territory with the “apprentice”. It’s a sad fact these days, few people want to work hard. That’s a hell of a damaged case half, something shifted hard in that case to cause that much damage, but we’ll never know. Hope you manage to find one.

I just did this with a small dozer.Bought it off the internet and paid a very substantial sum for it only to find when delivered it is worth maybe half what I paid.It would probably cost as much in lawyers fees for a chance at recovering my initial investment so ,like this gentlemen ,I have decided to move on and learn a lesson and try to make the machine viable. It was bought to do personal work so I have time as needed to fix the machine.Never in a million years would I misrepresent something I was selling, but that's me and I won't have to answer for it.

Bought a lot of equipment over the years that was owner(s) abused. Made great money fixing with usually easy repairs(many per unit) and selling them as working units.Owner of the TLB slipped off into the money pit: has to keep spending and hopefully he can find paying jobs for it to get some of the expense back.

And a failure by owners/ or managers. They should have maintenance check lists, primitive way would be to laminate them, for the cab. The current Operator/driver, must follow them they would be based on engine hours, for reporting that oil changes are require. Owners of a machine do conduct basic daily checks, and greasing. Why would, the employee not be expected to do the same, tick it off in an operator log book. And then, they must be held accountable.

@@grahamdunton3283 after graduating from Vo-Tech, I worked at a College University, worked in the construction side. Every time when we parked a machine, didn't matter if it was a 10min break or several hrs, it was mandatory for us as operators to check all fluids, grease the grease fittings, etc., etc. I will say, very little break downs. However, I'll also state, the equipment was just plain worn out, very old equipment but, still going strong. Cheers :)

Not many are willing to do heavy equipment repair s.. Alot of really heavy dirty work with high tech mixed in. Been doing that and Marine industrial since 1976. CAT is desperate to train techs today. All young people look up CAT tech training 4 year program s. A good solid career with benefits and all. I was in Union and Non Union shops. No one here in NYS can find workers.. All fields it seems kids brainwashed by internet and society to believe they are "to good" to be"manual labor" and Mechanics.. Even without a college degree. Crazy I tell people not to power shift tranny's just stop and shift fwd to reverse and only push dig in low range. Change transmission fluid and clean suction screen and planetary hub oils alot often ignored until it's too late. Or $$$$$$ Excellent Work thanks.

It can be very hard to find good employees and - but the older people work out the best and yes you still have to do some baby sitting - that's just the nature of owning a business - make sure the work is done right because the owner is responsible and then the taxes and unemployment issues come up - if it's not one things it's another with employees

Young guys these days have two issues, "jobs and girl friends", they go through both like fresh socks. Commitment is something they need to be taught from some place, if not from the folks then it's gotta come from school or a mentor. Pity you were looking forward to getting that young guy online, thankfully you found out now, as you say, before you got yourself committed to a contract. Hang in there Warren, you will find someone sooner or later (hopefully sooner).. Stay Safe & Cheers!

As you can see- Warren only has a regular water "pressure washer", which is less than adequate for his needs. If I had the funds- I'd donate. He needs an actual "steam cleaner" on a trailer that he can tow to jobsites and both Shops. His type of work is so much easier and less hazardous when components are properly degreased before work, and even before returning equipment to the Customer. I've seen Warren already has the portable tanks. He really needs to fab a decent utility trailer for parts and extra stuff.

The great difficulty in hiring of course is getting someone who's not only motivated to work (lot's of millennials have the wrong attitude) but also equally important is someone who can make progress with the jobs in a useful way for their pay. You need people who either have experience, or can catch on quickly, and that's not easy to find. If they waste the customers time and money you'll lose those customers in many cases. If you have to take much time to train them of course you're taking time away from the jobs you could be completing. Often that investment doesn't pan out because the 'kid' doesn't really want to learn, or they move on asap to greener pastures. I've worked with employment companies similar to Kelly, and they have their own pitfalls. Employment companies make the most money when they can employ as many of the people on their rosters that they can. When you ask them to send you some people to interview they'll send you the worst, least experienced, hardest people to place first.. You'll waste a lot of time sifting through people you can't use before you are sent the cream of the crop and even their best might not be suitable. The really good people, the ones you want are very easy for them to place and the companies that get them generally hang onto them.
