Case study 78 - transverse myelitis
Transverse myelitis is an inflammation of part of the spinal cord. The exact cause is often not known, but it sometimes happens after infections or in people with autoimmune diseases. Common symptoms are back or neck pain, weakness or sensation changes in the arms or legs, or loss of bladder or bowel control. (Source: hopkinsmedicine.org)
The main difference to differentiate between this and Gilliain-barre syndrome clinically is that GBS is ascending weakness and TM is at one level and doesn’t move (it has a particular spinal cord level).

My cousin that was like a sister developed acute transverse myelitis at age 18 in 2006. It took doctors over a month to diagnose her. She was paralyzed from the neck down and needed a ventilator at first. After about a year, she had regained enough mobility to lift her hands up and down with very little dexterity in her fingers. That was her only improvement. My beautiful cousin lived like this until 2 years ago. Her organs started failing, and she didn't want lifesaving help. I don't hold that against her. She was my best friend for so many years and the kindest person I've ever known. I am happy that the majority of people can recover well from this. 🙏🏻 I'm happy diagnoses can be made sooner now also. RIP Deanna 💚

I've had it for past 5 months. I can walk with a walker and for short distances without a walker. But I still have a lot of pain in my hands, arms, elbows, feet. Still have urinary problems peeing all the time and constipation as well. I try to stay active...hope this eventually gets better...we'll see...

Hello Dr. Grunch! My mother was diagnosed with TM but later with NMO. Can you explain the difference with the lesions in the spinal cord? Love your videos!

I got covid in Dec. 2022. I was paralyzed by Jan 7,2023. originally doctors thought I had GBS, but now I am thought to have idiopathic TM but my imaging is normal (7 MRIs). I was in a wheel chair but now i am mobile, with cane. Some Dr. say I have substantial nerve damage ,others including my current neurologist said my nerves are not damaged but he cannot figure out what the issue is. Has anyone heard of a case like this?
