You have hit a very good balance between sensitivity and content, you don't go on and on about how this victim is someone's precious relative (a given, I would think). Your background music is also very appropriate and not too loud. Well done!

I lived in Bristol at the time. I was working nights but my friend knew the family and participated in the search. This case haunts me, I think it haunts us all. I also struggled with bullying, anxiety, and disordered eating when I was young, so I really identified with Becky's struggles. It breaks my heart that she didn't have the chance to grow into a young woman like I did... Rest in Peace Becky ❤️

I'm always fascinated by how really good, experienced investigators seem to develop some sort of sixth sense when it comes to knowing the exact ratio that different peoples' stories should fit together: I've heard time and again that they got suspicious because several stories either didn't fit together well enough, or- as with these stories- when the stories fit together just a bit *too* well. It almost reminds me of the sense people seem to develop as parents when it comes to sensing whether your kids stories about an event that you didn't witness, (e.g. who ate the last of the cake, who broke a piece of grandma's china, or who broke the door of the washing machine, etc.) when your kids' stories are either totally different OR so similar that you just know, somehow, that they're covering for each other. But the stakes for investigators are obviously SO much higher!
@Tsumami__ Жыл бұрын
I think in this case it was the fact that their stories were literally identical, implying they’re rehearsed and disingenuous
@maneckineckbeard1749 Жыл бұрын
@@Tsumami__ Yeah, it's totally fascinating to me that there seems to be such a delicate balance between "stories match up, but each has individual perspective," and "stories match up so perfectly that they're rehearsed." But it does seem to me like it should just be basic human nature to realize that if you and another person tell *literally* the exact same story, word for word, that it would sound rehearsed! However, one of the major takeaways I get from being a true crime aficionado is that an amazing number of criminals seem to vastly overestimate their intelligence and ability to fool trained investigators. I once saw an interview with an FBI agent saying that he was always surprised by how many criminals don't seem to understand that even if they actually ARE smarter than one given investigator, it's still basically impossible to be smarter than an entire *team* of trained professionals. He said something like, "so many criminals like to think they're Keyser Söze...but nobody is, because he's not real." Also, I love your phrase "rehearsed and disingenuous." It's the perfect way to describe SO many criminals who think they're being clever!

Nathan, wasn't planning on "scaring" her, fueled by jealousy he was going to make her suffer, all the while pretending to be the " attentive, caring" son. Once becky was outta the way he could relish in his mother's attention and possibly take advantage of the situation. Becky sounded like a wonderful girl. Despite all that happened to her she was a happy teenager, with some usual teenage behaviour. Nathan and his girlfriend are vile people. For Becky's dad i felt so sorry. Even more for angie. She was the life for that girl,to love a child who's not your own, takes courage and understanding. Which angie had a lot of. I am so, so sorry for that family. Rest in peace becky . May the family find the strength to move on.
@ally19585 жыл бұрын
It is one thing to trust a teenager, but to not check on her whereabouts when she doesn't come home? I don't get it. I knew where my daughter was and when she came home she alerted me that she was safe. Once she brought a girl home with her who was a few years younger saying this 15 year olds mum had failed to pick her up from work - in a pub! My daughter was 18 or 19 so brought her home and the next morning took her home - the mum hadn't even realised the kid had not gone home the night before - sorry but that (as is this case) is child neglect.

They fail to mention that beckys father and step mother kicked her out one Christmas after an argument and often would threaten her with homelessness if she didnt do what her parents asked. Can you imagine how poor becky felt having to deal with her fear of this as well as her fear of Nathan. She told friends he scared her and said he would kill her on other occasions. He would also jump out and scare her many times knowing how much she didnt like this and how bad her anxiety was. He called her fat alot and made fun if her weight when she was younger and chubbier. Thus her eating disorder evolved. Nobody protected becky like they should of. She had such a scary lonely life. R.i.p becky please keep your daughters safe even from family.

The part about the ED really got to me: I've known several people who ended up with ED after being teased "playfully" about being chubby by parents and/or siblings. So many people seem to just be totally thoughtless when it comes to teasing young people about their weight; they think it's just funny, but don't seem to think about the damage they might be causing. (Although with poor Becky, it doesn't sound like her brother cared one bit about traumatizing her...he just sounds like a sadistic, rotten person.) Poor Becky. Sounds like she had so, so much pain and upset in her short life. She deserved SO much better! May her memory be a blessing forever.

@maneckineckbeard17492 жыл бұрын
@@r-pupz7032 I do understand, at least more than most Americans; I spent several years living in the UK as a kid, back when even the British police never carried guns. But then we moved from the UK to the middle of the American "Bible Belt," to a state where (even now!) the only red tape you need to deal with in order to buy handguns involves going to a local police station, filling out a card, paying $150 and BOOM! After 7 days you can get a semiautomatic handgun with a 50 round magazine. And, if you're willing and able to pay, you can even buy so-called "pre-ban" automatic weapons, aka machine guns. They can cost up to $35k, but still...if you can pay, it's yours. Like I said, now I live in one of the most restrictive states (to the point some of it is just ridiculous, pointless security theatre...but that's a whole 'nother issue.) but even here it's still possible to go to a sporting goods store, fill out a background check form, (mostly based on the honor system) give a thumbprint, pay your money...and 7 days later you can pick up your rifle or shotgun. So I've gotten to live in both extremes, and I can say that although one of my personal favorite sporting activities is target/skeet shooting and sporting clays, and I can't even imagine ever pointing a gun at a human or even an animal...I'd happily give it up in a second if that meant an end to America's gun violence epidemic. We do have a definite problem here, and whatever the reason for that problem it's pointless to deny that it exists, at least IMHO.

The presentation of the mortal demise at the malevolent hands of her murderer was done so with an adeptness appropriate ensuring both the gravity and seriousness of this utterly pointless crime against it's victim, her family members, friends and community. Born out of the wickedness engendered by jealousy in all it's primal Wickedness, nurtured by sheer selfishness and an appalling depravity. At the same time it demonstrates clearly the fragility and difficulties blended families must face each day, particularly so for the parents who need to be ever vigilant of the emotional needs of the emotional growth and development of the children in their care. Whilst unique to every family, it is especially more so in these families. Of course there are no easy answers, no standard recipes for successful outcomes. Good communication skills coupled with a particular emotional maturity are simply the fundamentals. There is a need for the fostering and maintenance of an atmosphere of an unconditional support . It is of course so very sad this young woman , full of dreams and the excitement that goes with the beginning of finding one's way into young adulthood, had it stolen from her along with confidence and the possibilities life seems to promise. Her parents, and grandparents will now only ever see her as an eternal 16 year old. The only consolation for those who are left to face a void which will never be filled, is to know the perpetrators have nothing to look forward to in their days and long nights except a never ending buzzing of neon light and tha HOLLOW banging of doors and the bars on the cages at some unknown location. Not to mention the awful unpredictability of those who now share the same stifling air. When I listen to these accounts I'm fervently reminded of how dangerous a place this World is for women, both young and older. It is the responsibility of every man to protect the vulnerable in our Societies and be ever mindful of the safety of half the human population. It is our innate duty as men.

Why is it that the people *least* qualified to be parents so often seem to have so little trouble when it comes to conceiving...when so many people who desperately want to become pregnant can't manage to do so?? If she did have a termination, then that's sad of course...but not nearly so sad IMHO than the potential of having someone like Shauna potentially raise 2 helpless human beings! If she did end her pregnancy, then sadly I think she probably made the right decision. Those poor babies would likely have spent their lives in care, as I doubt people would be lining up to adopt the twin babies of two infamously evil murderers. And, JMHO, but I don't think that even the worst criminals should be forced to carry through with pregnancies that they don't want. IMHO, that amounts to cruel & unusual punishment, and shouldn't exist in civilized societies. Lastly, since I live in the USA now, I just have to say that I'm really impressed that in the UK, it sounds as if women in custody are still able to have terminations? In most of the USA, it's basically impossible for anyone in custody to terminate a pregnancy. There have been numerous court cases of pregnant women desperately trying to seek terminations whilst in jail, and being refused. (Not that that's surprising, I suppose, since in numerous US states it's essentially impossible for women NOT in custody to access pregnancy termination, even if their health and safety is at significant risk. One state just passed a law making any terminations a felony, so I guess if we can't guarantee basic reproductive medical care for free women then it shouldn't be a surprise that women in jail can't access it...)
