I purchased a new Winchester Model 70 Classic in 338 Win Mag with the exact same problem. I sent it back to the factory and they shot it and said my 3" groups were acceptable (I did a similar work up to what you did, and used carefully crafted handloads to try to maximize accuracy). A new barrel (375 Ruger) was all that was needed-purchased of course by me. (That was the last factory Winchester I ever bought) Usually a new barrel isn't considered a necessary accessory for a factory rifle.

Parallel to this problem was my brother's M96/38 Swedish Mauser. My handloads beat factory loads, but a second group was always worse than the first after each scrubbing of the bore. Paid a fee to get a bore scope video--pits n general decay end to end were revealed. He rebarreled it in the same 6.5 Swed, I bought him a Timney for his birthday and sponsored his choice for a Leupold VX III scope. My handloads developed for the old barrel print consecutive subMOA groups. Clearly, a bad barrel can mess up a good rifle.

What we used to teach at CST. Run a bore plug through the barrel. This will show what you discovered. It's a common practice when building a competition rifle. Additionally, when factory rifles used to come with open sights induction brazed or high temp solder. It at times created a bad spot... dimension change. In the bore of the rifle. Meaning, replace the barrel. If you're flyers were some what consistent. The bedding job should have cured it. Next would be to use say a business card and work it along the barrel.. to pressure bed it. Often times and general rule of thumb. Light..or.. small contour barrels don't do well free floating. They "whip" to much. So full bed the barrel and action one to one. However, one of the first checks is a bore gage or bore plug. As you stated, this is an inexpensive rifle, not a lot of effort put into a proper polish of the chamber, contouring was factory cut.. not custom cut.. This would have been sent back to Mossberg under warranty. They would replace (hopefully) the barrel or the whole rifle under warranty. Sadly I have dealt with more expensive brands and "they" returned the firearm. Stating that they found nothing wrong... and were very slow in the process. Which then leads to a conversation with your customer. As to the course of action... and that's part of being a Gunsmith. The best part of this is now you know and you shared it with your viewers.

@9gomike26 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing. It would be interesting to: 1) Shorten the barrel to a point where the bore at the muzzle is not enlarged (measured with pin gauges), then re-crown. 2) Measure the chamber with a chamber cast, check neck and throat diameter and throat concentricity with the leade. 3) Re-cut the chamber with a tight tolerance reamer using precision concentric machining techniques. 4) Have the barrel air-gauged to look for tight/loose spots. Test after each change to isolate. Have heard that threading some barrels for muzzle accessories might cause them to ‘spring back’ or enlarge the bore diameter at the muzzle.

Great video Gavin . I had a friend who put a small bulge in the end of his muzzle .22-250 caused by a small amount of oil left in from cleaning , it would not shoot at all , his gunsmith cut an inch or two off it , recrowned and threaded it and it was back to as good as new . That last bit of the barrel really can make or break accuracy, keep up the good work.

After trying 6-10 different kind of bullets , 2 different scopes , different ring set ups , changed the stock to a bell and Carlson and I was still shooting 2-4 inch groups. Found Erik cortona and he was talking about barrel harmonics. I tried the limbsaver rubber thing and it helped some. Eventually I gave in and bought a tuner break and it finally shots groups under an inch after playing with the settings. Also had it to 2 different gunsmith and saw nothing wrong my barrel. If the tuner break didn’t work I was going to rebarrel it

Very good video! I have one of these in 450BM. It doesn't like the sub-sonics rounds but it shoots same-hole groups at 100yds with Hornady FTX 250gr. Been very happy with it as my go-to for OH gun season. Conversely, I had a very lengthy effort with a Bergara b14 Timber in 308. MANY trips to the range and boxes of ammo (including higher-end loads incl. Hornady Precision Hunter) to finally land on Fed Fusion 150gr. An unexpectedly fickle unit.

Thank you for this video!!! At the same time your original video came out, I too was having the same issues with a Howa 1500 in .308 win. I took it to my local gunsmith, and he noticed the barrel was tight at the muzzle. So, we cut it off about 3'4" at the muzzle. No change. I was wanting a Woox stock anyway, so the next step was to purchase the new Superleggera stock. Wow! That made the gun look good, but not shoot any better. I couldn't wait for this video any longer, so I recently ordered a prefit barrel from Preferred barrel. Still waiting for it to come in to see. I used them as they offered a barrel that I could put on myself (not being a gunsmith) using go and no go gauges. My local gunsmith removed the old barrel for me and lapped the bolt lugs. My new barrel won't be here until October, but I am very optimistic this will be the fix. Thanks for going back and looking into Jim's gun closer. It really helps all of us out here!! Great job!!
