In this case, the customer called and complained the room was cold. When we arrived, we saw the steam radiator was enclosed in a metal box. I had to explain how the box affected the heat transfer from the radiator.

Wonderful information & explaining how it works! Thanks! I touched something very hot once... I was seven, never did that again.

Well done. I can surely relate. Working at an all woman's college with mostly 100 year old, one-pipe steam heated rooms, I saw every concoction you can imagine to either hide that damn piece of iron from view, or turn it into a bookshelf and clothes hanger. In many cases a call to a room where the student is complaining of being cold would find the radiator obstructed or covered and the whole explanation repeated yet again. Very smart young woman, but sometimes just not seeing the obvious.

Thanks I would imagine the stories you have. I used to hear some of them at the APPA meetings I attended. My friend who was facilities director for a college used to shake his head and said, "This scares me that they will be running things" Thanks for sharing

Ray, a similar thing I see all the time is with baseboard heat. People do not clean dust or dog and cat hair or all three off the fins and wonder why the rooms will not heat properly. A lot of times they also have the baseboard damper closed shut also.
