Apache Cases from Harbor freight are an awesome deal. 80% of the quality of a pelican for 20% of the price. Pelicans are fantastic, but for what most people do they don't need to spend so much on a case that can be driven over. You shouldn't be abusing your gear just because you can anyway, take care of it.

just so you know, not sure if you mis-spoke but the valve on the side of all the pelican cases is for air pressure release... so if you pack it at 12000 feet and bring it down to 500 feet when you come off a mountain or whatever, its is easy to open. otherwise, the increase in air density would cause the case to suck its self closed and would require to be pryed open... Love you guys, met you at the overland show in costa mesa a few months ago, had a great time talking to Corrie, but you (sir) were too busy for me :-) you guys keep safe and keep the daily videos coming !

I ended up installing some gas struts to my Pelican Vault case and with them up on top of my roof, this has helped a BUNCH! No longer does the lid flop over and open making it a bit of a pain to fish back to close. The gas strut holds it up and then I can just easily grab it and shut it once done. LOVE it.

Excellent information, looking forward to the "Organization" video. Glad you are choosing to keep up the videos with the Wife, she brings a new twist that is appreciated. Food for thought on the buy once cry once, while I agree with the concept in most cases (sorry no pun intended) but I may not be overlanding in 7 years so a mix of Vaults and Planos will probably be a better fit for me/some.

Tip: Ask around, ask old photographers. I've got a lot of small cases, Pelikan, good soft cases. As needs change cases are way too big or not big enough. Ideally someone would reach out to gear-people (camera, photo, tech....) create a database of cases by size, model, interior packing... and set a general sale price. I don't throw any of it out because it's still good as new, but I don't use it. btw the Roam case? Get rid of it. You can make a case out of 1/2" plywood that same size, you can stand on it, sit on it, it'll look beat up after a few years which is a security feature. The only difference between custom camera gear cases and bare plywood is that really heavy layer of laminate that's on the outside. I hauled around gear for 30 years in both, the only difference is the one that looks nicer weighs twice as much and costs 4x more. When you make your own plywood cases if you crack something you can easily replace it. One good thing about the Plano is it's cheap enough that you can get what you _think_ you need, try it out and then _learn_ the dimensions that you _really_ need. Do you really need to stand on all your cases? Maybe you only need one case to stand on to reach the roof rack, maybe if you pull that out as your kitchen, one of you would like to be able to sit on it while the other cooks. I personally start with office boxes, cardboard, then I figure out if I need to go up or down. Cardboard for a photographer lasts a few months, off-road might be completely impractical. (Open bed one dewy morning.... ) Here's a slightly off topic tip. The Thule roof top containers don't have the seals as does the more expensive Yakima. I've never seen a drop of rain inside my Thule, that's 20 years old (the ABS has an alligator skin - ugly but Thule says don't worry about it, you can't 'fix' it.) Pelikan versus your 'dust proof water resistant'. Pelikan is over kill, I've had them for over 30 years. If you've paid $20k for that camera? Sure carry it in a Pelikan. If you're taking your gear to sea, (salt water is a bigger problem then multiple rainstorms), then sure. Otherwise your less expensive case look great. Security. You don't want to spray paint a big 'expensive camera gear' on the side of a case. You do not want to leave them store bought generic. Anyone could have that case. You have a logo. Glue or stencil that onto as many sides of the cases as you can. And of course it's also on your vehicle. Then some thief won't touch it. They won't grab a case, and they can't use one as a carry all. Foam. Padded partitions are more useful than foam. Any and all padding and foam gets stiff or gummy over time. So at home don't leave any cases with this stuff open. I've got a Pelikan with foam that's 35 years old, the foam's a little stiff but it's all good because it's been closed for 95% of that time.

One inexpensive item I really like is the "IRIS 82 Quart Weathertight Store-It-All Tote". It is tough enough to stand on and has a gasket on the lid. I also like that it is designed so that water will not pool anywhere and will run off if it gets rained on...

When I want the most protection for my camera gear I first put it in my Think Tank bag and then put that into my Pelican case. The Pelican keeps the dust out or water if having a bad day driving. Once at the destination I just use the Think Tank bag. Thanks for the case review because I was not aware of the newest Pelican Vault case.

The Plano cases are great for starting out. That way if you move up to a drawer system, or decide you want different sized cases your not out hundreds of dollars. And they work well for heavy-duty moving or storage boxes if you do upgrade later on.

The problem with using a $500 storage case to store camping equipment is that the case is worth more than what's inside. Now I've got to worry about somebody steeling the case...and probably dumping the contents in the nearest dumpster. I use Pelican cases for my cameras and computers, but these are locked inside my truck. For the truck bed, the cheapest thing to that keeps water out is what I'm looking for. I haven't used Plano, but I think I'll give it a try. Expensive cases are good for tools and other expensive equipment, but for rusty camp stoves, sweaty sleeping bags, and old tents, Plano sounds like the way to go.

Any suggestions for metal containers? I run the 68qt Plano boxes because I find they fit perfectly in my Tacoma bed. I can run 3 across between the wheel wells and four across behind the wheel wells. No wasted space. Plus they are lighter when loaded and easier to lift. Don't need a back injury in the Backcountry. You guys missed the most expensive cases though. That would be the aluminum Zargas/Alu-Box type cases. You can drop $600+ on just one. I actually have a big one of those. I lived in Africa and they were indestructible, but very, very heavy. I used mine for international shipping.

Testimonial: I ran Plano 54 quart sportsman cases on the rack ahead of the tent through a torrential rain storm in the mountains of Montana/Wyoming at 55-60 mph, the whole time I was fretting that all my gear was going to be soaked.... To my delight, when I parked for the night, opened em up and not a drop, I was extremely impressed with them at that point. And at $14.99 at Sportsman's Warehouse. Bonus! (12779)

Thank you for this video. You have made cases so very interesting. You guys could be talking about cheese and crackers and I would still watch. You could use a little more cowbell.

The only complaint I have about the Plano case is the odor it emits inside. Other than that I've been happy with them.

I have Plano. It cost's only 26 bugs but I need to do something. First, I'm gonna buy some adhesive sponge sheet for inner space cushion. Second, I'm gonna buy some attachable rubber lining to make it waterproof. Now, the total cost is almost 100 bugs but the box is pretty flimsy. It is thin, frasile plastic box. Made of cheep material. I don't need crazy expensive box like ROAM but I need something more durable.

What, no military surplus ammunition boxes or random crates? You should check them out if you aren’t worried about the aesthetics. I’m interested in the direction that Pelican is going with their gear, thanks for sharing.

The 68qt Plano case is $20 at Wal-Mart. I think $25 for the 108qt at Home Depot. Hard to justify the “overland” cases for interior use. 3 of the Plano cases fit perfect between the wheel wells of a 4runner.

I know you have a son. Any other kids? Get him/them involved in the demonstrations. If he loves the adventure as our son does, he may get a kick out of making some gear testing videos? Maybe a recovery gear bag video?
