Superb analysis of a great comic! The way the 'camera' *doesn't* zoom in until the very end is so clearly and wonderfully linked to the ease of reading this. Excellent video on all levels, including the superb editing - thank you!

Ik a lot of people dismiss Miller because of his modern works and his controversial works, but his impact on Batman and Daredevil CANNOT be overlooked. Great video and a great channel. Edit: for suggestions I recommend Chip Zdarsky's Peter Parker: the spectacular spider-man #310. That story always makes me cry and it has some very good visual storytelling, I feel that would be a great topic for a video. Also the final pages of Spider-man: Blue.

I'm not an avid comic book reader, but I've always loved Year One. Your breakdown of just this tiny aspect reveals why I must have responded to it years ago. After seeing Tim Burton's movie, I remember thinking I wish it was more like Year One. Batman Begins was close. But Year One is so down to earth and has the best of what prose and visual storytelling can offer. Great channel!

This episode was in my suggestions, and I'm a huge fan of Mazzucchelli's visual storytelling. Your name sounded familiar, and after a quick Google search, I realized that you're the reason "The Infinite Loop" was in my (very tall) pile of TBR Graphic Novels & Collected Comics. So I FastTracked it to tonight's reading, and I have to say, Fantastic character work, and Graphic design. Also, great page breakdown. Subscribed.

Absolutely love this, I did similar studies of both comics and novels when I did my degree in 3D animation, it really helped in making me understand why certain Artists/Writers made the decisions that they did. A common thread I found in studying my favourite stories which were also big hits or tended to be quite popular is that they were always focused on how they made a person feel with the story they were telling. I could go on and on about that but I'm gonna hold myself back from writing the LOTR trilogy here and just say you earned yourself a subscriber. :)

Absolutely fascinating. I just subscribed on the strength of your analysis. Your astute breakdown of a single page helps me appreciate the analytical reasoning and strategic placement of managing content within panels. I just started reading Darrow’s Shaolin Cowboy and his line work is incredibly detailed and intentionally gratuitous. However, from what I’ve seen thus far, he counters the graphical overload with pages that, for the most part, aren’t text heavy. Our eyes are meant to start and stop, camping on the minutest of details. Oftentimes, it feels like a treasure hunt. Elsa, (and forgive me if you’ve already addressed this), I’d like your thoughts on this type of storytelling as it appears to be a counterpoint to your analysis here.

Heya I just stumbled upon your channel 2 years too late. Such good content. I have a question, would it have been a good idea to frame the 3 panel violence from Commissioner Gordon’s POV instead of across the street? I ask this because I feel like the intention is that we are supposed to be feeling what Gordon is feeling in this scene.

Great stuff, again! Just one question: as a lot of your followers will have (some of) the books you talk about, can you tell in the intro what issue/chapter the page is from, and the page number? I like the fact that I can have the book open on that page when you talk about it. And it avoids me frantically scrolling through the book trying to find the exact page, although in this case it came early :-).
