YES! “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that” and this movie has that arc for Batman. I choked up when he reached out his hand and the first person to grab it was the little boy. Matt Reeves is brilliant.
@zachwalton3544
@zachwalton3544 Жыл бұрын
Right I feel like that was so symbolic. When we someone experiences trauma and is left with PTSD they can sometimes remain the age they are mentally when the trauma occurred or split off and become an entirely new person. The little boy trapped in the heap of metal could symbolize Bruce (him as a child when he experienced the trauma) and Batman takes inner Bruce by the hand to lead him to the light. Now the two personalities are simpatico.. so to speak. Idk my interpretation I suppose.
@johndiaz9190
@johndiaz9190 Жыл бұрын
@@zachwalton3544 That’s exactly how I interpreted it as well. The mayor symbolized the city and its citizens behind her, but the little boy, the victim of a violent city like Bruce reaches out first. It’s Bruce saving himself first. And then the city follows him through the valley of the shadow of death. Its my favorite scene in the film easily.

To me this film is like Blade Dunner or Dune. The story is solid, but what I’m really coming back for again and again is the atmosphere. This movie gets so much out of sound design, lighting, score, etc, that most blockbusters don’t take advantage of.

I remember watching the video with my mother and as soon as we went out of the cinema, the first thing she said was: "This is the first Bruce Wayne that acts in a psychologically plausible way to the trauma he suffered." (thats not debetable) - ONE of the best villains in superhero movies (opinion but quite not debetable) - By far the best ever Riddler (not like he had much opponents)

Nice work. Good points, good commentary. Some sharp applications of modern screenwriting philosophy around character wants, needs, etc. I also like how you tied in the themes from Last Jedi, and counterpointed the flaw of Infinity War. I hadn't put my finger on why Thanos feels like an empty character, but you caught it nicely. We don't see how he arrived at his plan. He explains it, and even provides visual aids, but this just isn't the same as showing. He never actually comes together as a character, because we never actually understand who or what he is. He's just a threat. I loved this film, but I definitely feel it could have stood to make more of Catwoman and Batman's connection. I felt like Catwoman ended up getting less development than she deserved. The film does a great job early on showing Batman's total lack of interest in her needs or feelings, but I felt like this sets up the need for Batman to get schooled a little more harshly over his callousness. Not just an off the cuff mention that he's probably rich. I feel like Catwoman is the perfect character to really lay it out for him that he's not the only one in the world who's known loss. Riddler can belittle Bruce Wayne's loss, but Catwoman could come from the other side, pointing out that Batman isn't alone in his suffering. The movie touches on that, but doesn't really dig into it. Annika's death should have changed everything for Catwoman, but we didn't get to see directly how badly it affected her. That whole plotline felt clumsy, missing opportunities to strengthen the movie's core themes in order to rush to the Batmobile sequence, which felt tacked on, no matter how cool it was. But hey, that's just one man's opinion. Still probably the best Batman movie to date. Which is a miracle in itself, considering it emerged not only from the turmoil of the studio, but also the pandemic.

Loved the idea of a Bruce Wayne being addicted to batman. To deal with trauma people often use an escape, and end up diving deeper into darkness. Bruce indulges in this escapism this to the point where Gotham suffers because he’s ignored his responsibilities as a Wayne. Really unique perspective on the character I’ve never seen before. Also the cinematography and set design is unmatched. Every single shot uses movement, perspective and focus in a unique way, not a single shot is wasted or taken for granted.

a lot of batmans villains are arguably dark reflections of batman either that or their the opposite of him specifically or expose a specific side to him or whatever like the riddler generally in most represents his intelligence testing it with various riddles to see if he can solve them scarecrow is fear as batman uses fear as a weapon against his enemies scarecrow does the same thing but for openly malicious purposes even further then that poison ivy represents lust bane tests his strength characters like hush and rag al ghul have much more extreme versions of batmans ideals catwoman is an obvious example and then the joker is the opposite of him completely batman represents justice and order the joker represents chaos and anarchy

It would be nice to see Batman learn to inspire hope through the Bruce Wayne persona as well as Batman in the next film. Maybe Bruce starts to understand the value the Bruce Wayne persona can bring. And he finances the rebuild of the orphanage that Riddler was in when Riddler burned it down. Ensuring another Riddler can never be created.

I think DC has been making director driven movies with their own personality. Say what you will about Flash or Shazam 2 the directors for the most part spoke with their own voice. The problem is dc fans and Batman fanboys. They read Batman comics or watch Batman films and believe that's all dc is, when in fact Sandberg, Mucsheti and even Jeenkinss for WW1 captured the spirit of the characters very well and put their own spin on the characters at the same time.

There’s also the part where riddler is extremely egotistical, craves attention and has the emotional stability of a toddler. He escalates from kill the corrupt to kill an innocent for the sins of their father to all rich politicians are corrupt and anyone is expendable. He escalates it to feel badass and acts like he’s hot sht but acts like a weeb thinking he can do something crazy. So the flooding of Gotham is def in character for the riddler. If he grew up privileged there would be hell.

I loved this movie sooo much but catwoman just didn’t hit the mark, I felt like I was watching Zoe Kravitz not Selina Kyle. Everything about the character was right except the personality, she was just depressing and thats just not how she is, she handles pain so differently than how it’s portrayed in the film. Her look, weapons, storyline and outfit are on point but when she talks it’s just flat and anyone could’ve played the role that looked good in the suit at that point, I really wish her script was written completely different. Anne Hathaway was honestly an amazing catwoman, she knew her mannerisms and the way she moved and spoke her lines.

To get an even better look into Edward/The Riddlers mind and motives you need to read Riddler: Year 1. It's a six issue comic based on him a year before the events of The Batman and basically explores what Edward goes through to get to that point in his life. There is currently 3 issues out and they're incredibly well written and the art suits the tone of the character so well. It's also written by Paul Dano, the actor who played The Riddler. You come to find he's not as uncaring as you assume but he's really just incredibly mentally ill and doesn't know where to channel all his negative emotions. Obviously only 3 issues are out so he's due to get more character development in the next 3 but yeah. Very good read, I certainly recommend it.

How could you possibly watch this more than once? I bought this on 4k and have fallen asleep both times I've tried to watch it outside of theaters. I'd rather play Batman Arkham Origins for the hundredth time than sit through this slog of a movie again

"Maybe more brutal than any other Batmen we've seen" Actually, Batinson takes third or even fourth place here. B v S, (Which I actually haven't seen but I've seen enough to know he's 1) and Keaton are definitely way more brutal. To begin with, Batinson doesn't kill, but he also doesn't use his tasers unless guns are involved.

This movie is such a wild ride! The opening and final battle especially are amazing and all have the perfect balance of reality and the fantastical to feel as epic as possible that the Nolan films really excelled at. Also, Michael Giachinno's score is incredible. Speaking of which, do you think you might ever make a video on Werewolf by Night?

It’s probably one of those films that not everyone might enjoy, but you’d have to make a strong argument to ever to say it’s bad, and it’d be difficult to do so. It was brilliant in my opinion.

The most tensed I felt for Batman in a long time! Especially when the riddler and Batman are talking one on and one and they make it seem the riddler figured out his identity but in the end didn’t. OMG the music and the way Robert Pattison acting in it amazing! The he starts slowly look at the security camera in the room and starts to get a lil worried he’s going to get exposed!

This is one of my all time favorite batman movies ever made! Everything from the tone, to how Gotham city almost becomes its own character is brilliant. All the performances are perfect! The music is also excellent. Also whoever did Colin Farrell's makeup to turn him into year two penguin deserves an Oscar cause he's unrecognizable!

I think the movie had more potential. The trailer got me hyped for the movie, but there were definitely a lot of flaws; story plot holes, overuse of swearing, mediocre fight scenes and the second part of the movie didn’t really have a payoff. In comparison to the dark knight (not fair I know), it really isn’t the best Batman movie.
