My grandfather was a holocaust Survivor From Treblinka. He passed away in 2008 at the age of 98. Back then, I still wonder why he said to our family that he would disown all of us if we ever become a settler in Israel. After listening to this, now I understand why. It solidified and reconfirm what he had told our family back then when he was still alive. Hell, he never even once considers himself as Semitic but European. According to him, Israel is the Only state that needs to be in a constant state of war to maintain it existence. How well this lecture has aged. It currently feels as if Israel is busy with their own "final solution." after October 7, 2023 attacks. I do not believe the Israeli state was caught by surprise in perhaps the most surveiled place on earth where Hamas' attack was planned. I believe they knew exactly what would happen, but that the sacrifice of a few Israeli lives would be justification to wipe Gaza from the map. I would not put it past the Netanyahu regime. Palestinian Christians are about 90% Levantine, and Palestinian Muslims are around 70-75%. They have admixture from surrounding populations (Saudi, Egyptian), but it accounts for less than 30% of their genetic makeup. Even if they were 100% Saudi (which they most definitely are not), 1400 years is a long time. Ashkenazi Jews have a good amount of European admixture (close to 50%). Does that disqualify them as people of the Middle East?

The Levant is a small piece of territory that includes modern day Israel and Palestine, and very small parts of Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Egypt. Only 8% of Palestinians have the unique genetic Levantin markers, shared by Jews, Assyrians, Samaritans and a few others. Those 8% are likely jews that converted (forced conversions were implemented in that land pretty much for most of the 2000 years it was ruled by conquerors, untill Israel implemented freedom of religion within its borders. I agree that 1400 years is a long time and its irrelevant, I just don't see why some people think they need to distort facts and history in order to somehow "strengthen" the Palestinian claim, their claim is strong enough without it.

Thanks, Professor Pappe, I was not clear on the question of the Arab armies, although living on a kibbutz 1967-1968 made me pro-Palestinian and the events of the 1990's made me an opponent of the 'Two-State Solution'. I now strongly support a single, secular State of Palestine.
