all Colbert's interviews are slowly becoming this way, this is why he's right before Conan in ratings, which is second last!
@DeathlyTired9 жыл бұрын
+TheVancouverJatt Not sure which ratings you're using, but the standard Nielsen ratings have Colbert second every week in every category, behind only Fallon. The latest figures were unusual in that Colbert was a tick behind Kimmel, at third place in the key 18-49 demo - but ahead in all the others. You can see the figures here: tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2016/02/19/late-night-ratings-feb-8-2-2016-jimmy-kimmel-live-continues-to-grow/ Or, you can see any other weeks figures on the same site, which will show the same picture. As, +Jim D mentions, Conan is far behind (also in the figures at the link provided), mostly because he's on cable, not network.

This is one of the best Late Show Colbert interviews I've seen in a long time. Do people not understand that they're simply having fun and that a little tension just makes it interesting? Reminds me of the old Colbert. To be honest, most of the time the new Colbert seems to be frustrated and bored out of his mind with the empty celebrity chitchat and circle jerking that he now has to labor through 5 days/week.

Joking about someone appearance could work for some people but others may not have it, specially when the joke is the interview icebreaker. Colbert set himself up for trouble for the rest of the interview. Maybe Colbert should try to test the waters before going there. Not everyone has a good sense of humor and I believe that in order to make the best out of an interview Colbert should aim for the strengths of each guest. I love Colbert and wish him the best.

@akhorahil62509 жыл бұрын
+FilmKiln Neither... They basically found themselves off script and had to figure out a way to get back to "the joke". Most people seem to think all of this is off the cuff, it's not... They have basic talking points/scripts on these shows. Unless you are some uber elite AAA list player that the show bends over backwards to get... someone that isn't going around promoting anything... Then they all do a pre-interview interview with the producer of the show. That's where the host learns "Oh I hear you just got back from vacation" or "I heard a funny story about your child". Then the guest does their little 5 minute story about whatever to basically kill dead air. He probably just didn't have anything to say about his personal life so they made up a little bit and it floundered. To me, Colbert is the worst at this. For such a funny man he struggles when things don't go as they are planned. He's gotta have the setup to his jokes go as planned. When the guest doesn't do their part, he struggles to get back on track. He never gives up on the joke either... It doesn't matter if the joke fits the convo or not. He needs to study Seth Meyers's ability to conduct an interview. Meyers is probably the best conversationalist in the business. He doesn't use cue cards and is really good at steering the conversation no matter how off track the guest gets. I say that because there's no way he can do what Conan or Fallon do. Colbert might be a comedian but he's no joker... He's just not a gag man.

Its pretty typical for an interviewer on a talk show to start off with some sort of joke to break the ice in some way before the interview begins, it wasn't the best of jokes yeah but other than that Colbert's interview was pretty good. To the people saying it was bad just because the first minute is a bit shaky, maybe go back and see who was really the source of the awkward conversation because from how I saw it, it definitely wasn't Colbert, he was just trying to get through his *onw* joker before the interview started and Casey kept interrupting it and taking things personal.

+GregNobody - so ... you are totally wrong. The only week Colbert lost to Kimmel was during a week the Late Show was running re-runs. Also, the show has closed the gap with the Tonight Show- and occasionally won some nights ... without Howard Stern. Fallon is still king, but you are still very, very, wrong. Dumb ass.

Jimmy Fallon is absolutely terrible! His monologue sucks, he's terrible at interviewing, and his fake laugh drives me nutz!! I'll take Colbert any day

Fallon gets more views because he gets more famous guests and has less political humor

Colbert was probably thinking of Cate Blanchett... Who is also not from New Zealand, but rather Australia.

I don't really see what's awkward. They made each other genuinely laugh a few times throughout the interview and they seem to be on the same page.

I read the title and I was like Stephen May? Who is Stephen May?
