My other video has mostly demo of this session with no dialogue. Someone else questioned why so much demo and not enough talking. Can't please everyone! Casey was generous to let us video and encouraged me to post it. Thanks Casey!

I just found that what Mr. Baugh said about 'universal language' is true, I painted (still an amateur one) a theme about my nephew (18months), niece (2 years), and my son (8years), and when I arrived to give them the real painting, the little kids embrace the painting all of a sudden....and most extreme my nephew start hugging it for the rest of the night and no one could get rid of it untill the next day...it was a great experience regarding he is still infant.

Thank you Christine for posting this video. I just finished a workshop with Casey and enjoyed every minute. If anyone has the chance to study with Casey take it! He is an excellent teacher and so amazingly talented. Thanks to Casey for being so free with his knowledge and solid instruction.

his comment around the 20 minute mark about sculpting the painting was incredibly valuable to me. I literally applauded him. It was such an "aha" moment

Ms. Christine Pilkinton, this is a great teaching. Although he is explaining other things and talking I think his work is a wonder, marvelous! It seems to me that he much like Rembrandt, working in chiaroscuro? I love this technique. The wonderful work he does with carbon is simply fascinating. Thank you for sharing with us this great artist. G-d bless

I loved what he said about drawing last. I would be so tight with a charcoal drawing underneath that I don't think I could paint a stroke!

Casey has a really high painter's IQ. His painting process is actually backwards. He actually works like a sculptor. Like working from clay, he lays down big masses of paint with no boundaries. He sculpts with the bush and before you know it, a beautiful face appears. It's funny...I had the privilege doing his workshop in 2010 and he was playing that same song from "Radiohead". I hate that he moved to New York because there is less of a chance to catch his workshops. Plus he has gone up on his prices. I did a 3 day workshop for 375.00 back then. But I still really enjoy his work. Casey is truly one of our contemporary young masters of today.

+Gerald McCarter I agree with what you said. I actually wrote down what he explains to be the four things he focuses on when he paints, in order of importance: 1) value; 2) colour; 3) edge and 4) drawing. Often I am too "hung up" on getting the drawing or detailed shapes right which freezes me up, rather that letting myself go concentrating more on putting down blocks of values and colours and then slowly towards the end one can refine the shapes more - the drawing part. I like his general philosophy. Some artists teach in a manner that is so rigid and technical, paying a lot of attention to rules that it literally "freezes me up" and kills my desire to paint.

Quit complaining! He was kind enough to let me video during his workshop and I had a huge lens that was very heavy to hold for hours. Originally filmed for my own notes and he was kind enough to encourage me to post it. I hate complainers!

Yeah most artists that give workshops wouldn't really like it when they're being filmed, so this is awesome for anyone not able to go to his workshops. (And he has like a 1 year waiting list now?)
