"It´s also really easy to do a bad job. Let´s do it!". The intro really pulled me in. Finally a tutorial tailored after my own skillset 😄Thanks Casey!

I love that you walked us through both ways and the reasons why you would choose one over another.

The planar tracker also has Corner Pin as an operator you can use, which works really well if theres any kind of rotation to the screen you are trying to replace.

I like cutting out the screen and putting my screen replacement behind as it makes it easier when your replacement footage isn't 16:9 or if the screen isn't 16:9. I can fudge the size a bit and have the original plate cover any overlap. Same if my track isn;t exactly perfect. A tiny little bit of shifting won;t be as noticeable if it;s hidden under the footage. But yeah that stabalize and de stablize trick is pure gold. It;s also great for paint outs. Always love your videos. Wish I was half as good at making tutorials. LOL

I think this is a good lesson in the question of "What is the subject in the frame?". If there is a couple making out on the couch in your frame, then I would bet that showing that is a part of the story. If this is a horror movie and the bad guy is being shown on the news - then the TV is the subject. And we know from regular cinematography - that the eye will go to the brightest parts and the parts that are in focus. With this example you have a built in advantage with it being a TV, because humans are conditioned from children to look at the TV. So the blur and the lifted greys, I would do as you showed if the subject is the girl on the couch. But if it is the content on the TV - blurring it might look more natural - (nothing is natural in hollywood). I'd make sure the eye focus was on the TV.

you use the planar transform. Is it better than using the “corner pin” option in the planar tracker?

100% would also love the green screen workflow. I'm thinking over a few shots, where I'll put "10 Hour green screen" video on my phone and then replace it with my own screen later in post. Fingers possibly moving over the screen. Would love to see that, might not be hard but seeing your workflow for something like that, would be great

I personally recommend you don't use the green screen method as much as you can. If the fingers are slightly out of focus the blur will contain green spill, when the fingers move and add motion blur, the motion blur contains green spill. You can desaturate a screen because it is already black - but it is allot trickier to do with human skin tones. I would use a black screen with tracking markers and use magic mask to add your fingers back on top. Just my personal recommendation based off of my experience.

@vanbeekfilms Black screen you say, won't it be difficult afterwards not to mess up the phone screen bezels ?

Is there a reason why you aren't using the regular tracker node to do your tracking and pinning all in one? I understand having it broken out helps with teaching the theory, but it seems like a lot more work than is necessary.

Why bother setting up the background and not just use the vacation footage?
@vanbeekfilms
@vanbeekfilms 2 күн бұрын
I'm guessing this. If you set up a background, you can merge whatever you want over top and use a transform to fill the screen. You could even over extend whatever you're merging on top and use the "out" of the background to mask the merge. However if he did it to the footage instead and the footage is 4k, the corner pin won't work for footage that is HD, or vise versa.

Due to various reasons like your studio light's placement or brightness, the camera may not show the footage from the TV clearly. Even in general cameras are not great at capturing screens due to brightness and flickering/refreshrate so adding that in post while losing some realism, will deliver the content of that screen to your viewer much better than capturing it on actual screen. (Classic example is a news clip where you want to notice something on the tv) Sometimes things change after shooting is done, at that point you'd want max. flexibility in editing.
