I knew better, but I did it anyways and it bit me in the ass! They say these motorhome jacks are for stabilizing only, and should never be used to lift the RV in the air. However, many times while camping we've had one end or the other completely off the ground and never an issue. I'm still not sure whether it was the rear jack sinking, or the front one retracting itself that caused the failure, but either way I got extremely lucky that the only damage was bent mounting brackets for the rear jacks.
Luckily I own my own tow trucks and head the @zackliftinternational4841 sitting there on the back of the @SeriousTrucks ready to go. So between that and my @harborfreight off road jack, I was able to get it picked up and safely set on some blocks
Be sure to check out our Patreon project where we use whatever it brings in in a month as our budget to help someone the following month! A potential rebranding of the video... Helping out a handicapped RVer in woods. No shame in mistakes, but don't get yourself killed by it or over it. I had my T.T. start taking off on me when I disconnect it the RV pad was set with slight grade. Rolling and bent landing jack. Thankfully stopped when landing pad became a scraper. Gosh, that was 12 years ago.

Casey I worked for Coachman servicing bigfoot systems for over 15years & yes you can leave the system fully extended for long periods of time ( like winter storage )as long as you coat the pistons with lubricant prior to lowering ( 556,WD40,) , what happened in your case & i have seen it many times is the front left gave way lost pressure over time causing the RV to tilt applying more side force to the left rear lean which in turn caused the base to dig in and eventually causing the supports to bend at their weak points ,your system when working properly should be able to support the RV for an indefinite amount of time while extended ,but please remember it is an open system meaning if you have a bad seal or blow a weak line due to dry rot the system will come down retract so while up for service use jack stands , and it always good to have your piston feet on 2x12x12 pressure treated pads to widen the foot print .

I watched you set blocks with grain aligned with rotor/ hub and almost commented that sometimes hub/rotor will split blocks, but I didn't .. then lock splits as you set down on blocks. 😋 I know you know better, and yet you did it again in final set. Always set wooden blocks so edges are at 90 degrees to grain of wood! It's like you said about using levelers as stands, you might get away with it but it might "bite you in the ass." 🙂 Doing this safely takes way less time, way less injury, way cheaper than even 1 failure in 100 tries.

Indeed. Over the years having worked at a tractor dealership, we used woo blocks as big as 16" x 24" to support machinery that required work beneath them. If there were hydraulic cylinder supporting any amount of weight, we surrounded the rods with steel angle iron to prevent the rods from retracting in any way. Then the wood blocks were put into place as the main supports. The huge blocks were always stable & gave extra room underneath to do our work.
@--_DJ_--
@--_DJ_-- 13 күн бұрын
@dougbourdo2589 The ministry made me get rid of all of my wood blocks a few years ago. "What is the weight rating on that block?" I dunno but they always worked far better than jack stands on heavy equipment that has no good place for them.

I used four chunks of pressure-treated 2x8 screwed together to create two 16" squares of wood which are 3" thick. (Made a set for a guy after repairing his 5th wheel landing gear leg which had gone deep; used his scraps to make a set for myself -- unfortunately, mine blew out the back of our pickup! :( ) Not only does this spread the weight of your hydraulic jacks over a larger area, it keeps the feet from freezing to the ground which can create another nightmare all it's own! Thanks for being honest enough to share your mistakes as well as your accomplishments. I always try to keep it real the same way -- sharing the good, the bad *and* the ugly. :)

I feel really bad for you Casey what a terrible thing to happen, as a MH owner myself I can say leveling Jack's use can create problems, had a few problems myself, I now carry blocks of wood to put under the pads to distribute the weight better.

There is a trick to backing when you can't see the space behind you. Measure how far you can back up safely, then at the cab, mark the ground "that space", and when you reach the marked space, you are just right where you need to be.

it took a 7.1 earthquake for my leveling Jack's to fail. i was in it and it was a e-ticket ride. i always use a pad under my leveling Jack's because while the ground may be solid during the summer, a good rain can cause the ground to become soft.

Watching this made me think of what my father told me over fifty years ago when I screwed up big time. " We're not mad at you son , just very disappointed ." He knew I felt bad enough already on my own .

It’s not unusual for me to learn something from you in every video. When you sent all of the tires at once, I thought to myself that I didn’t see that one coming. Ha. I nailed that one!

You can buy jumbo adapter foot pads for those jacks to help alleviate the sinking issue (that's never been an issue). This is one of the few times when you "haven't been good at this".

Regarding your rearview camera; I had taken my car to an audio place to install a decent sound system. They ran the amplifier's power lead directly by my engine's distributor cap. The engine RPM caused a whining noise in the speakers until the amplifier's power lead was re-routed to isolate it from the high voltage of the spark plug wires. What I'm saying is, maybe your rearview camera wire is run along an unshielded other wire and is experiencing unwanted interference.

@@jacksmith7726 But it has a power wire which, if interfered with, can provide dirty/noisy power.
