This was a mind blowing live performance. This song in the studio has so many layers and no where to catch a breath live... Most of her songs are built that way.. so they have to be changed and improvised live.. No human could reproduce them live exactly like the Studio mixed final product. Bravo... I don't care what anyone thinks. mariah has inspired millions of people with her gifts of bringing us the most gorgeous and catchy melodies ever created. Muah!

I always think because of the Whitney comparisons she always felt she had to exacerbate the parts of her voice that made her unique, and in doing so produced songs that were so unbelievably difficult to recreate exactly live. It added such an unnecessary amount of stress to her voice and had partially contributed to people being dismissive of her now, but damn did she ever give us some of the greatest performances ever when she could.

I don't know why some people keep saying she gave the back up singers a death stare for singing her part when it's a stupid theory. The back up singers are standing more in the back and for Mariah to look at them she would have to turn her head back. She just looked to the side. The back up singers were singing their part in unison with her. Besides, in any butterfly performance the back up singers sing that part exactly like that. People like to create stupid arguments over the stupidest thing. Anyway, how I miss this Mariah who really sang her heart out. Great performance.

This is where those breathy notes get her into trouble! Apart from her shallow breathing she's focusing all her breath onto her vocal chords. Her amazing voice is there but shadowed by her bad technique! I still love you Mimi! :)

Her vocals may have not been the best in this performance but her tone is amazing to say the least. I just think Mariah didn't want adapt a better singing technique. She uses the neck muscles to support her voice which is incredibly detrimental and limits your range. Her breathing is also not deep enough and it cuts the phrasing short so she constantly needs to take short static breaths and it gives her a more lighter and shallow sound to her voice.

Like somebody else pointed out, her songs are very layered and she uses her own voice sometimes as background which makes the songs impossible to recreate live and she knew she had to overcompensate to try and produce the same sound from the album. If she had developed a different technique, we probably would never have gotten the kind of songs that she produced on her albums and that would be a damn shame. Celebrate the career she's had, not lament about the one she didn't. She's a legend and is still benefitting from writing her own material. Life doesn't always work out the way we wanted it too, but people adapt and get through it.
