This is a really wonderful and tense British thriller. It showcases what a wonderful actor Peter Cushing was. He had that priceless asset all great actors have: believability.

Many years ago when I was an art student in London, one of my fellow studnets had a Saturday job in Harrods, where he regularly served a silent Peter Cushing with a single Mars bar. Apparently he had been doing his Mars bar shopping there for years. One day, it was noted Mr Cushing didn't come in and so the student was sent round to the star's residence in a Harrods van, with a single Mars bar. Mr Cushing hadn't ordered it, but the department manager saw it as an obligation.

Thank you for posting this film. What an excellent performance by Peter Cushing! This was a good little British thriller/mystery with a touch of the master storytelling of O.Henry. IMO, British actors are quite accomplished....I think due to their classical theater training. Please show more British movies. Thank you.

I really enjoyed this Christmas thriller. There was one small thing that kept putting me off. It was every time they called the bank manager's name. I thought the crook kept calling him four eyes as an insult, and then I realized everyone was calling him that. I must be misinterpreting his name. Aha, his name was Fordyce. Anyway, it was a very intense performance by Peter Cushing and powerful lead by André Morell.

Grazie KZbin for showing this brillant well-written and acted old clasic! It was pure 'theatre' and begs comparison any day with the over-priced movies that come out of Hollywood studios---guess it was done on a 'budget'---only a good script and 1st rate acting from two actors in mainly two rooms of a simple set!

Although Peter Cushing was known for playing powerful, intelligent, and even imposing characters he was actually a very gentle man, as well as a gentleman. He was known to be kind to younger and less experienced actors and actresses, sometimes deflecting the criticism of directors. He was married for many years and was truly devastated when his wife passed away, he took some time to come back to acting. Oh and he even featured on a song that chartered. Unlike his friend Christopher Lee, who was on a couple of very heavy metal records, Mr Cushing was sampled for a trance / dance track. It was called something like Snow White Clouds. Not only one of the finest actors of his generation but one of the finest actors full stop.

@@debbabbit9283 in uk you now only get bank branches in bigger towns and there are far fewer in cities. There are "hole in the wall" cash machines where the bank used to be and a lot of banking is done online. They want people to go cashless where you pay with a "tap in" card or your mobile phone. People, eg the older ones, are not happy. I think in Sweden it is hard to pay for anything with money.

Kinda dodgy on the details. Why is the vault inside the bank managers office? What was the point of him wiping his forehead by the window? Who accepts a guy as an investigator without asking for Id? How did the bad guy get all that info? No time lock on the safe? No cameras? Why did they bring the suitcases back into the bank? How did they catch the bad guy so quickly? Was the bank manager in on it as suggested by his speed in packing up the money? So many questions. Why did I watch this ?

It's the 1950s - so definitely no security cameras. You would be amazed at how much was done on "trust" back in those days - especially if somebody had the right type of accent. And, as the plot shows, attempts were made to try and identify "the inspector" but fell foul of the archaic telephone systems of that era. So not THAT unrealistic in my view. I thought the acting was excellent. I thought the fact that the manager got fooled by a fake phone call is something which is very much a thing today - and quite an advanced plot device for the period that the film was made in. Yes, the plot was a bit curtailed with some gaps in the narrative. I guess it was made on a very tight budget. I enjoyed it.

Smart plot, good acting and it all takes place in a few rooms. Plus, since it was Christmas, the bad guy gave his victim a gift. TY.

I don't think it was so much a gift. He just didn't want to be associated with the bank manager. He was concerned about his reputation.

Andre Morell, Richard Vernon and Peter Cushing.....apologies to the wokes of 2023, but here you have the essence of quintessential English aplomb. This is Peter Cushing's best performance . His intensity and realism is astonishing....but don't take my word for it.......watch!

Many young people disapprove of the prejudice and injustice of the past, and even if they often go too far, they're not half as ridiculous as people who squeeze anti 'woke' comments into any social media crevice. According to these geniuses, they're the greatest threat to the west since the Ottoman empire. Incredibly, they're so brainwashed by the tabloids and right-wing Internet memes they'll still vote Tory, and perpetuate the destruction of this once wonderful country.

@@callithowiseeit5806 WELL SAID!!! I am UNAPOLOGETIC!! The BLM thugs invaded London by the orders and funding of Obomination in 2008. Now you see the black nazi fist everywhere. Terrorists. I LOVE the times when England was unadulterated, unpillaged, and clean. English history and pristine will never die.

interesting film, but so full of plot holes. I guess it was quite clever for its time as the alarms and things were probably quite new and the idea quite novel. the ending ws also quite disappointing as it inferrs that the bank manager might be convicted.

Nope. The inspector said there was no crime for what he did. They probably need him to make a statement.
