Food Scientist here: the glow alginate is a sodium alginate mixture put in a tube with some glow stuff in it and then when dropped in the calcium chloride bath, the calcium chloride reacts and forms a skin because the calcium ions go in between the strands of alginate and locks together forming that skin. This hardens the outer most layer and can work it’s way in and harden the entire thing if left too long in the calcium chloride bath. This process is similar to boba spheres as well as the fruit caviar at froyo places. It’s called spherification! Thank you for coming to class everyone gets an S for salt.

2 years later lol but I got two of those pets for my 12th birthday and the color would come off if you washed them with soap, however that wasn't include in the instructions. Plus if you let them colored for more than a day it'd stain the pet, the velvet would get sooo dirty very quickly too

I work for Crayola at their "amusement park" the Crayola Experience. We give all guests a free Scribble Scrubbie and recommend avoiding highly pigmented colors or to try soaking the pet in water overnight if the color doesn't come out easily.

The Scribble Scrubbie' pets actually a big hit in my house. Yes the pets are never perfect white after the first few times colouring but my kids don't care they love washing them and colouring them again and again. Its a great activity/ toy that keeps them busy and all i have to do is put a plastic table cloth down where they are playing.

I actually got the scrubbier scrubbie thing, and it works. I didn’t get the kit though, I went to Crayola and got them from there. I didn’t use the ultra clean markers, I used the regular markers that they have. It worked fine, in the sink.

I think the second science kit would be good for a young child, maybe about 3-5, as an introduction to science where it's less about the why and more about the experience, whereas the first one is more for ages 6 and up. I genuinely find the first one fascinating, but I love math and science

Random factoid: Some cats actually do enjoy baths. Sphinx cats have to be bathed regularly as the absence of fur means that they accumulate more skin oils; these are removed through bathing. Some kitties with fur enjoy bathing as well.
