When we were out this weekend on our Century, I wanted to play around with my DJI Mavic Air 2S a bit. I opted to get out of the boat and mess with at it the dock while my buddy drove, due to the reasons you mentioned :) I don't mind launching the mini sized drones from hand, but did not feel like launching from a rocking/moving boat on a larger sized drone with larger propellers. In addition to the home point continually changing. For DJI Drones, there is an aftermarket software called Litchi that has a 'dynamic home point' option but I had not used that for awhile so I opted to stick with the DJI one this time. I wanted to try out the activetrack capability of it (which I'm guessing you've had issues with also) - watched a few KZbin vidoes to refresh myself on 'how simple it was', and ended up annoyed at the software not recognizing my gestures on the screen. In the end, it wouldn't work once I figured it out, because what I was tracking was 'not a person or a vehicle' 🤣 So I ended up practicing at following things and flying manually for a few minutes, and then bringing it back.

Love this. Great video. I have a Skydio 2 and almost identical experience. Some greatness - then a bunch of frustration. lol. I’m headed to lake Powell next week and give it another try.

@@ADDvanced Just got back from Lake Powell. Actually got some really good video. Two batteries worth of filming. Then tried again a few days later... not sure what happened, but drone disappeared. Lost it to the lake gods. lol.

Actually, what it needs is an Alpha SS. Blackhawk would mean changing out the whole gimble and stuff.... Alpha SS was a shortie alpha but only produced for a few years... been trying to find one for years now.

I was looking to do the exact same thing with my drone and my bass boat. Had it up in the air and didnt realize the battery was getting low and when that happens it returns to the take off point, which was about 100 yards behind me and over the water! I had to chase it down and caught it just as it was getting ready to land in the water! Not a super expensive model but was glad I saved it!

Yeah they need to make drones that can land on slightly drifting boats. Should be all software.

Be careful when the water is smooth and glassy / low texture, drone can get confused about distance when water is glassy, and that may be why its drifting further away
