This is one of my earliest childhood memories. I used listened to this tape everyday when I got home from preschool when I was 3 and 4 years old. The wolf's voice used to scare me to death! Thanks so much for uploading this and bringing back such great memories!

Totally had this book and a record to go with it. In an age before Netflix and even before we owned many home videos, I can't imagine how my mom felt about me listening to this record at least once a day for like three years.

Oh wow! I had a big plastic case that had like 8 or 10 cassettes that had all these books to read along with when I was a kid. Each cassette had a different story on each side but there was a book for every story. I still have them if my mom didnt give them to the grandkids (which is most likely)

I recently found out the Big Bad Wolf voice on this recording was done by the late Jimmy MacDonald, Disney's main sound effect artist for many decades, and he also voiced Mickey Mouse for a while, along with the mice in "Cinderella," Evinrude the dragonfly in "The Rescuers," Humphrey the Bear, the Dormouse in "Alice in Wonderland," the wolf in "The Sword in the Stone," and Dopey's vocal effects in "Snow White."

wileyk209zback I didn't know that.

How did you find out it was Jimmy MacDonald who did that wolf voice? For years, I had been wondering who it might have been, as the voice actors for these read-alongs usually weren't given any credit.

I found out from Greg Ehbar, when he did a post on Cartoon Research about "The Three Little Pigs" being released on record.

Oh, and it turns out Jimmy MacDonald also provided the vocal effects for the wolf in the "Peter and the Wolf" segment in "Make Mine Music." The voice he used for the Big Bad Wolf on this record is pretty much what the "Make Mine Music" wolf would sound like if he could talk!

The Big Bad Wolf's voice on this read-along never scared me as a kid, but I always thought it was strange how he sounded so different from the actual cartoon, same with Practical Pig's girlish voice. Of course in my Big Bad Wolf vlogs, I like to have the Wolf complain about how he does NOT sound like how he does on the record. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXeQcoOjgJWKpa8

There's a reason for that. Billy Bletcher may have not wanted to do more work, since he was in his early 70s, while the person who provided the voice on the cassette was the sound engineer.

the way the wolf is portrayed in this book (both voice & appearance) scared me a a little kid. The way the wolf looks on the cover is VERY misleading as to how he looks in the actual book lol

Cummings as Bletcher's all-around replacement (for Pete and the Big Bad Wolf as well as any other random heavies Bletcher used to play) is one of those arrangements where the replacement sounds absolutely nothing like the original, but it's so funny in its own right that it doesn't matter. Bletcher's Pete and Cummings' Pete are really two totally different characters, but I think both are hilarious in their own ways. Same goes for the wolf, athough we know him far less well than Pete.

That was the 1981 Disney/Fisher-Price Storytape and Book read-along. That one was WAY closer to the original cartoon in terms of appearance and voice, and so the Big Bad Wolf wasn't as freaky.
