I have a Classwiz and it has been a brilliant calculator for my Open University Studies. However, I just upgraded to the FX-CG50 and it is like a whole different world. There is so much that it can do that at times I feel like I am completely underutilizing it at times. But I still don't regret buying it. But Have two out the trio make me feel like I am starting to level up my calculator usage.

I've had a battery powered calculator give up on me in a stressful situation once, and I immediately bought the Classwizz. Although it does have some very annoying limitations, it is absolutely reliable and hasn't broken in over a year of abuse. And obviously it has a solar panel, which is just a cool gimmick until one of your classmates has to start tilting the screen to see what he needs :)

The Casio fx-82 Solar II (in Europe) or fx-260 Solar II (in America) has a similar look (faux carbon fibre front with a white plastic back and blue cancel buttons). I think Clas Ohlson stock the fx-82 Solar II in the UK if you're lucky enough to have one of their shops in your vicinity and if they're not out of stock! Despite the modern appearance, this is more of a respin of the classic Casio calculators where most functions are postfix (e.g. "30 SIN", "2 LN", etc.). I hope they do more respins of those classics, but with more functions, as that's the style of operation I grew up with.

Either calculator is great. The obvious benefit to the CG50 is that you can draw graphs (along with a few other extra features) which is obviously useful, but remember you still need to know how to sketch graphs well for A-level. A fx-CG50 is also quite expensive so if you are on a budget I certainly would consider the fx-991EX as your first port of call. it's a great calculator. Maybe see what the class are generally using and go with that as you can help each other.

Pretty much. The Classpad has Statistics, Spreadsheet, Graphs, including Table mode, 3D Graphs, conics, sequences and program. I am not sure about Python or the probability simulator. It does have the Physium app with the periodic table though. The Classpad obviously also has the Symbolic algebra and differentiation/integration as well.

Alrhough the aps seem similiar in design, the Classpad has way more options and usability features that make it superior in what you can do on it. Where the CG50 shines is that it has a full keyboard for data entry and the Classpads keyboard isn't really there - more of a touch screen device (essential buttons are soft keys instead). Funnily, the classpad is slightly slower and has a slightly lower res screen than CG50 - still remains the king of calculators.

It is MicroPython v1.9.4 , which I assume has less features than full Python. Ultimately I will do a video on this, but my knowledge on this at the moment is very limited. Lovely calculators, but I am unable to get any of them to simplify completely the following surds: (sqrt(3) + 5) / (sqrt(2) - 4). Both the Classwiz and the CG50 give me a decimal number as a result, -2.603... (bah!) and the CP400 stops at - (sqrt(3) +5) * (sqrt(2) + 4) / 14 (boo!) Key: - is a minus symbol. However, the HP Prime does a much better job than the Casios with this result: - (sqrt(2)*(sqrt(3) - 5*(sqrt(2)-4*(sqrt(3) - 20 / 14. 👋 But notice how the Prime doesn't or won't multiply out the sqrt(2) * sqrt(3). Why is that? And what's going on with the CG50 and CP400 that they go belly up when surds are involved in calculations? Curiously, when I asked the Prime to simplify sqrt(2) * sqrt(3), it did so with sqrt(6), as did the Casio calculators! Bizarre!

By the way, is it (on the fx-CG50) possible the use of units in the "equation solver" app like on the HP 48G series calculator from Hewlett Packard? On the HP 48G series, when using the "equation solver" you can use units even in different system and get the solution of the variable you want. For example: Volume of cylinder (I work with diameters rather than radius): π × (d/2)^2 × h = V d = 6_in h = 1500_m V = (solve)_bbl With the HP 48G series, you can add units (even in different system) to each parameter. For instance you enter 6 inches (6_in) for the diameter, 1500 meters (1500_m) for the height and you want to get the volume in barrels, so you write whatever value in barrels (1_bbl). Then you press "SOLVE" on the volume and the calculator gives you the volume of the cylinder in barrels. Should you want for instance the diameter in meters instead of inches, then you write it in meters (6_m), or the volume in cubic meters or cubic feet then write the unit accordingly (1_m3 or 1_ft3). And so on. You can use any type of unit. Is it possible the use of units on the Casio fx-CG50 in the "equation solver" like you can do on the HP 48G series?
@TheCalculatorGuide
@TheCalculatorGuide 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. At least I haven't come across it. That being said you convert between units and then SOLVE separately, but obviously that is not as all encompassing as what you suggest here with the HP. Sounds good.

The Casio fx991ex is the world's best scientific calculator in many ways, including the solver and the speed of the calculator. It also has a built-in spreadsheet and the Japanese version has the periodic table built-in. The colon (:) key in combination with the calc and (=) buttons allow you to make basic programs on the Casio fx991ex for iterative calculations. The main problem with the calculator is that it wipes calculation history when it powers down, and it powers down automatically (after a couple idle minutes). If Casio would only allow the calculator to remember what it was doing between power on and off or when switching modes, then this calculator would be perfect. That being said, it is still the best among similarly featured calculators. The cg50 is nice hardware but its software is antiquated. It's the same software they use on all their old graphing calculators. The software was designed for much less capable machines and it is lacking with respect to the hardware in the CG50. Adding micro python support was nice, but still not enough. This calculator needs a graphics library in python. Or it needs an easy way to make C programs on PC for transfer to the CG50. I do use the cg50 now and then, but only for graphing or maybe the solver. This is mainly because the screen is sharp, colorful, and bright. I actually prefer the solver on the hp42s (DM42).

Yes, you can do the Fibonacci series of sorts using : and ANS as well in spreadsheet. You are certainly a power user! I have to admit I don't really look at it from a coding/advanced user perspective, just maths eduction really and for that the fx991EX and the CG50 are both great.
@jonl716

 The Calculator Guide I have never seen a guide to this before, but you can program the fx991ex with any algorithm. You can create loops and if you are creative branching. For example type into your 991EX: X = 2 * A + B: Y = Y + X:B=A Press "calc" Enter A=1, B=2, Y=0 Press the"=" key to step through the algorithm This algorithm is something I just randomly made up, but I've used this feature to quickly solve complex iterative problems. (with numerous complex equations that feed each other results). what this program does is: step1: solves X = 2 * A + B step2: takes X and adds its value to Y (overwriting the old y value) step3: prepares the next step by making B=A step 3: assumes the only value that the user has to change each iteration is A (since B is just LAST(A)) step 4: the program restarts at step 1. enter a new value for A only (in this case), then step through the program again. Y will be the cumulative sum.

Thanks for the vid. They chiselled the CG50s buttons. You will see that all the buttons are slightly smaller because the bottom egdes are cut at 45 degree angles. This does not release any space on the calculator but reduces how much area falls in contact with the finger tips. Now, its a small difference but I finally realised why the CG50 feels unfomfortable to type on compared to any other calculator I have.
