Casio CDP-S160 Review

This is my review on the Casio CDP-S160; Casio’s entry level fully weighted and graded digital piano. It has good voices, a good key action, can run on batteries and it’s even triple pedal compatible. This is a great value for a beginner!

First time watching Piano Time. I really liked your review. It seems more honest than some other reviews. Most of all, your opinion of the voices agreed with mine while others sometimes say "What a great sound" when it sounds terrible to me.

after watching this video again, I find the interface so silly... it would have made more sense in my opinion had Casio went with old school dials like we get on a guitar amp , one dial for reverb , one dial for chorus & a few other dials for effects... that way we can just dial in as much or as little as we want like an old school guitar amp... throw in base , Trible & middle... it would be so much easier

Yeah I'm never a fan of any key combinations on keyboards; the only thing about the 160 that makes this a bit less painful is that they are labelled; the CT-S1 has the first 28 voices labelled and then that's it; the more expensive PX-S1100 has NOTHING labelled which drives me crazy. I actually sold my PX-S1100 because it was so frustrating to use.

Never played a Casio weighted keyboard, but I generally like Casio products. I had a CTK-3200 way back and the action was much better than my way more expensive Yamaha at the time. The GHS action on the P45 didn't impress me at all. But I guess it might be better on higher end GHS models. I will probably have a chance to try P225 soon which has the new GHC action.

I have the Casiotone CTS1 which is pretty good for like 200 bucks & change USD; it would of been great had Casio built it with key weighted action, & had removed some of the voices of which in my opinion aren't very good in order to cut cost. what I like about the Casio line is that there is a setting to set the sustain to automatic so for a beginner they don't have to fuss with the pedal . Although, I have a pedal , I still set the keyboard to automatic & use to pedal to play soft piano I was looking at the Casio CDP-S160 , but I doubt I would invest in it..

The CT-S1 is a very cool keyboard for the price; the 160 is also a great deal for a fully weighted action.

I agree the Casio app is awful in my opinion i installed it but I never ever use it

They’re both great choices! They both have good sounds and good key action. Casio Advantages: - can run on batteries (portability) - all functions are labelled on the keyboard so you don’t need an app - has a jazz organ (if you care) Yamaha Advantages: - better strings voice - built in audio interface (you can make audio recordings way easier including piano videos just with your phone - with the Casio you need to buy an external audio interface box) - compatible with Smart Pianist app (awesome app, adds a lot of useful functionality) Hope that helps! Casio has fantastic ideas, taking the XW-P1 as an example, a step sequencer for drums, a mono synth with 6 oscillators, a polyphonic 6 layer synth, a organ with drawbars and a phrase sequencer in one machine but let down by a operating system from hell, still love Casio though

What is the downweight of the keyboard action, especially when comparing white and black keys, Tony? Are the keys short (downweight close to the fulcrum)? Thank you, Michael Ps. I am surprised that you have not reviewed your new Hammond.

Not sure what the downweight is; it's very similar to the Privia PX-S in feel, but because the PX-S has the extra software assisted sensor, it's not quite as responsive as the PX-S (but it's still a bit on the light side, and I still prefer this to the Roland action). And yes, Casio did the same thing with this action as with the Privia. and weighted the black keys slightly lighter than the white to compensate for the extra bit of heaviness due to the compact depth. But as with the Privia action, doesn't affect my playing at all. (It bugs some people, some people shrug and say "no big deal")
