Step 1: Go to "SETUP" Mode by pressing "SHIFT" + "MENU" Step 2: Scroll down and find the option "Complex" and press that Step 3: You could choose between two different formats in there. One is the complex form on option number "1" and another is the angle form on option number "2" PRESS "1" Now see if it helps

Doesn't count roots of complex numbers. Root from 9i, gives an error. The answer should be 2.12+2.12i

----------------- TI-68 ALL THE WAY ---------------------- For Complex Numbers the current crop of non-graphing calculators, at least the ones I've tried such as the CASIO fx-911*, TI-36*, HP 35s are all major DISAPPOINTMENTS. The vintage, very reasonably priced (when new) TI-68 (released 1989, discontinued 1997) RUNS CIRCLES around the current generation! So much for progress :( To enter a complex number you simply used a parenthesis with a comma. If you wanted to enter it in polar you simply used the handy "angle" key (with the 2nd function key); No need for any clunky mode-switching. It was that simple. If you took square root of -5 you would automatically get (0,5). Simplicity at its best! Likewise, if you took "log"/"ln" of a negative number or arcsin/arccos of a number of magnitude greater than 1 the calculator would AUTOMATICALLY, give you the complex-number answer. No need for special modes! In an exam-environment, not having to drill through menus or fiddle around with special modes was a VERY good thing. Here is the complete list of complex number functions the TI-68 supported: I. Complex Number Arguments: ===== KILLER FEATURES ===== UNIVERSAL POWERS - Both the base and exponent could be complex: e.g. (2,3)^(5,7) UNIVERSAL ROOTS - Both root and radicand can be complex POWER OF NEGATIVE BASE: e.g. (-8.7)^2.9 For Negation use simply used the "-" key. ===== The Usual Suspects ===== addition, subtraction, multiplication real-part, imaginary=part magnitude, angle-part Square/Square-root Reciprocal sin, cos, tan, arccos, arcsin, arctan hyperbolic: sin, cos, tan, arccos, arcsin, arctan log, ln, anti-log, anti-ln II. Automatically returned a complex-number answer if argument was outside the range for a real answer. No special mode required. arcsin, arccos: e.g. arcsin(-3) hyperbolic: arccos, arctan log, ln: e.g. log(-4) square, square root: eg sqrt(-3), sqrt(3,5)
