Great video! Noticed a lot of comments from people saying they are beginning the journey to learn piano. I feel compelled to offer my advice that you should get the cheapest 88 weighted key(s) board that you can find. Memorize the keys however works for you. Learn songs that you like (I recommend Beatles covers via you tube)... & before you know it you will be playing II-V-I's in different keys. Obviously not that quick & simple, it does takes hours of practice... but the thing when considering what actually is a beginners keyboard for someone starting out, is how much patience and interest you have. As a long time pianist, I just purchased this specific keyboard not as a beginner & neither did the talented person :) who posted this video. When I was just learning, this kind of keyboard only helps to an extent - more so if you are playing in a band with friends where you can establish rhythm and timing. Orrrr I guess if you take the time to play against a stored rhythm on the keyboard itself. But there is no denying an unweighted keyboard can be frustrating to play as a beginner because there is zero forgiveness on unweighted keys and can lead to giving up. Don't be fooled, the OP is a very gifted player... and it's ironically more challenging to play his example tunes on this "beginner" keyboard than what you might consider a more advanced board or piano. For $100-$200 more you could have an 88 weighted key Yamaha that will make you better faster period. Or for $100 cheaper or honestly for free you could have an unweighted keyboard, dry erase marker or stickers to mark down all the notes... and by all means that route is fine too but can bet the dowry it has a lower success rate. Either way you have to learn/unlock/memorize the individual notes and put them to rhythm patterns. Notes make chords. chords make progressions, progressions become theory -- eventually the sky is the limit after a few committed years. But again, in my likely annoying to this point opinion, you find the teeth and passion of learning quicker and stronger with an 88 weighted keyboard or piano. I'd like to say there's no wrong way, but if you want to learn and play the piano faster and without throwing in the towel .. learn on the real thing. There is a reason the old lady across the street teaches 5th graders on an actual piano :) --- Also to be clear this is a great video and I bought this exact keyboard. Not to learn, but because I was trying to find the best bang for the buck board that takes batteries to bring camping or playing in the park, ect. One love! - I hope this comment didn't sound pretentious.. the world needs more piano players :)

Great point! I also bought the CTS1 not as a beginner, but as a professional producer and musician. Just for playing on the couch, writing songs or jam with others! Just because of the menu-free interface and the great sounds for the price! Really learning to play piano may be better on an weighted keyboard with 88 keys and hammer action, but this keyboard can be inspiring for beginners as well, who don't need an arranger keyboard.

I do love when keyboards detect the status of a connected pedal when you first turn on the keyboard -- more manufactures should adopt this idea. I have just been in the habit of only buying pedals that have a polarity switch on them -- ever since I ended up having to play a wedding with the pedal 'backwards' the whole day! Here are the defaults from some common manufacturers: Yamaha sustain pedals are normally closed circuits (connected terminals when pedal not yet depressed) Roland are normally closed circuits Casio are normally open circuits (not connected when pedal not depressed) Korg are normally open circuits

Dear Khordmaster, I'm trying to get someone who has the CTS1 tell what the "layering " function is. One demo on youtube mentioned that you can adjust the volume of each layer. Does layering mean that you can select a preset like an organ preset, then add strings and piano presets that will play with that preset ? That would be a great feature for live performances if that is what layering means. Or is layering where you record a song on the internal digital recorder, and then play along with that recording using the preset of your choice, and adjust the volume as you wish? Someone posted that layering is mentioned in the manual on page 32 -33, and page 67. Hope to hear from you about that feature, and thanks for your video !

@@Khordmaster Thanks for the reply KM. I've had a couple of replys that confirm that you can layer a preset / voice with one other voice. You can adjust the volume and sustain of the layer added and store it using "My Settings" feature, so it will be loaded for further use. Tony from Piano Tone replied with this info, doing a demo of the CTS1. It's a great feature if it works like I'm hoping it will.

Not a beginner learning piano. If you’re a beginner 88 weighted keys are an absolute must. But, this is noice and I’m buying one as a cheap travel keyboard I can take in the camper and boat. if it get ruined no biggie. But at least we can keep playing while adventuring. At home we have a more pro level 88 keyboard with weighted keys. I sure wish this had weighted keys but at least they are full size. If you’re learning you really need to start with weighted keys.

Yamaha and Casio have different sustain pedals. There is a pedal that has a witch to use one pedal. It is best to get different pedals because switches could fail when you need it most. Batteries: rechargeable batteries do not put out the same powers a a regular battery. In addition rechargeable batteries not only cost more, but they get weaker over a short period of time. Just use regular AA Batteries. The music rest is great. The only difference is color of plastic on the red keyboard is black. White matches white and black matches with black keyboard. My own CT-S1 is red having a black music stand. The quality of the stand is fine. I like the black stand with the red keyboard because it makes the black keys stand out nicely. Then you can use the earphone plug to plug into an amplifier. Depending on what is on the amplifier you can do some sounds that will wake and get the attention of the neighborhood. 61 keys on the instrument are a different setting, what? Finally the real complete manual to the instrument is on line. An important factor is the 64 polyphony compared to other instruments in this price range. Whenever looking for a keyboard the polyphony is a major consideration for sound quality regardless of the brand name.

About the white CTS1, I wish all electronic devices like TV.s, radios, remotes, amplifiers, computers, copiers, printerrs, phones, recorders, vcr's (now almost obsolete) dishwashers, etc. were white. I like being able to see what button or slider to press in a dim or dark room. I have a Casio CTK 500, still learning to memorize some of the presets, and I need a flashlight to see the print on the black control panel. One thing I will say for the old analog TVs, radios, record players, etc. is that they had knobs, so you could easily see what station you were on, what volume marker was set at, same with treble and bass knobs etc. There were TV's, radios, stereo systems, with lighted dials that told you what channel or station your were set at with a glance. Many of the high end dishwashers are concealing the controls in the top of the door, so you have to open the dishwasher to look at your settings. I far prefer accessibility and clarity over aesthetics.

You’re welcome! I’m pretty sure it had something to do with the batteries being rechargeable or old. I bought new non rechargeable Duracell’s from Costco and they work fine. Haven’t tested the other batteries in other devices yet tho..

Use the headphone output. Get a Y adapter cable. 3.5mm male plug into the keyboard to two mono 3.5mm mini female jack, and a pair of 3.5mm make to ¼" female jack adapters to connect to a pair of standard ¼" guitar/instrument cables for stereo L/R output to an amplifier or PA system.

Casio is a Japan company, so it may be made there, some major brands may have them made in USA, but like so many of the tech companies, they may have regional production facilities for international markets in vicinity of those areas.

This was a good review. Personally my only problem with this product (which I haven't bought yet) is they need to take about six notes from the top register and move them to the bottom. The lowest note should be the g below the lowest note on this product (c two octaves below middle c) so middle c is the center.

I think there's a way to octave down
@SergioGarcia-jg3yy
@SergioGarcia-jg3yy 2 жыл бұрын
I have the same issue with my MODX 6 which is also a 61 keys instrument. You simply octave it down. But it's true that this is not as easy in the Casio because you have to push a button and a key to go octaves up or down. I can't understand why there's not a dedicated pair of buttons for that as in almost every non 88 keys keyboard.
@smc1377
@smc1377 2 жыл бұрын
For future reference, you can octave it down by simply holding down the function key and pressing the C#3 key (the C# to the left of middle C). In fact, whenever I turn on my CT-S1, I automatically hold down function then press the C7 key and the C#3 key, then press the surround key. Function+C7 sustains every note (useful when you don't have a pedal attached) and Function+C#3 drops the keyboard down an octave. And the surround button just makes the piano sound much more dynamic and rich.
@interglossa
@interglossa 2 жыл бұрын
@@smc1377 I think the universal sustain is useful because sometimes that would be ok in working up a piece. For some music like jazz or pop the octave down would be ok but for classical you just want the notes in the default register but you just need that b flat or g two octaves below middle c and you don't have them. I think you would have to just not play the notes and either modifiy the passage if that is easy to do or just wait until you are in front of a larger keyboard to play it right.

It just amazes me to no end that when people get anything new that comes with a manual, they simply feel they are so smart they don't have to read it. I would suggest you read the manuals first before doing your next video. You didn't sound too smart in this one.

While I agree with you in general, I don't think it's fair to apply it to this video. The title clearly says that this is an unboxing and first impressions video. This isn't a review video. If it was a review video, then yeah, the person should have learned more about their instrument before reviewing. But being that this is simply an unboxing and first impression, it's completely expected that a person won't know all the intricacies about the keyboard.
