Big plus with the CW is spreadsheet data, f(x), g(x), and stat data is not lost when switching modes. You can now use f(x) and g(x) in other apps like spreadsheet. Also you can set the power timeout to 60min. A huge draw back is the loss of the CALC feature and ":" that allowed for stacked calculations. Perhaps this loss can be made up within the spreadsheet mode. I think the improved data retention is well worth the compromises if you are considering doing from the EX to the CW.

the changes applied to the variables somewhat remove the sense of CALC, although the colon func was amazing. you could literally write a small program with non-programmable calculator

@@vyrsh0 Look in the instruction or any 10-hours long video on using the calculator. If you input something like y=x+2 : z=2y : x=y+2 with initial y = 0 it calculates the formulae from left to right upon pressing = 0+2 = 2 2*2 = 4 4+2 = 6 and so on. The notable thing is that you may insert x = f(x) and it replaces x with its new value, which reminds me of programming languages.

I would like to share my recent experience with purchasing two calculators. Two weeks ago, I bought the 991CW model for £12, and just today, I acquired the 991EX for £35. My experience with the 991CW was somewhat frustrating. I found it required too many steps to achieve the desired result, such as converting numbers into degrees, entering these degrees, and so on. In contrast, the 991EX offers a much simpler and quicker operation. Regarding the design, the 991EX has round buttons, which might not be to everyone's taste. The 991CW, on the other hand, features convenient arrow keys and an OK button. Its font is clearer and appears more modern. Overall, after comparing both, I have decided to go with the 991EX as it significantly enhances ease of use for me.

I Set my default output format to decimal so I won't need to change to decimal manually each and every time. Plus I have memorized every order of keystrokes required to use a function of my choice. For doing repetitive computations with large numbers I put them in spreadsheet and derive my required results using 'fill formula' option. I agree on the CW being complicated but the buttons are comfortable compared to the EX. The data inputs in other modes (statistics, matrix, spreadsheet, vector) are not erased when changing mode so you can work with them without re inputting them. The CW does have its pros compared to the EX

The speed, functions and new display are a plus but i find the older model way more aesthetically pleasing and actually i think the busier keyboard makes accessing the functions easier. Especially as an engineer I need integrals very often and now with the new model you have to go through the menu to find the option for it. And thats only one example, maybe Ill buy the next model if they fix this there and make it less menu based but for now my 8 years old EX still works fine, just replaced the battery and ready to go for another 8 years!

Suggestion for CC channel: As an afterthought of my former comments in this video, I would suggest comparing this CW, an EX (both Casio) with a Sharp one, considering time (keystroke and calculation) to solve 2 or 3 common problems. Regarding the Sharp (also Japan based) I have here in Brazil 2 units of Sharp EL-W516TBSL, having WriteView, 4 Line Display, Battery and Solar Hybrid Powered, complex numbers, with Root-Finder/Solver, 3x3 Sim.Eq., Integral (Simpson method), which is somewhat similar to the discontinued FX-991ES+, now seen in Osalo’s 991ES clone, I guess. Regarding the TEXAS, TI-30XII and TI-36X Pro would be 2 famous options. How about checking the “alternate” / “No name” calculators? Parents and students around the World would appreciate that too. My guess would be to check which AP High School or early Engineering problems are more frequently asked - not for Benchmarking the NumSolver or IntgSolver, but real life set of 2 to 4 problems, as an exercise / homework / short-exam sheet. Could even fold in the future as dedicated “General”, “HS”, “AP HS”, and a “undergraduate STEM” page-sheets. Making a video using the same sheet for a given calculator - one video per model, might be covered in ~10min each. A summary of keystrokes per problem number of menus, and overall time employed, or special tricks to bypass model-specific limitations, or the use of exclusive features, could be in the summary at the end of each video. No one is going to blame if a geek could solve with fewer specialized keystrokes, where the Correct result is #1 feature, Agility probably #2 and Intuitive operation a #3. My feeling is such kind of vídeo would become a success among younger users (and their parents), probably within CC scope or mission.

I agree - I'm not a big fan of the new menu system of the CW. For the older MS, I have memorized my commonly used unit conversions, so I could press shift+CONV and then punch in the conversion. EX/CW have more keystrokes in comparison (although not having to pull off the cover of the calculator to look up the conversion is arguably a better trade-off). I also like to use the CALC and SOLVE (with = X) features to quickly calculate microstrip trace impedances or other short calculations iteratively. Now it's hidden in the Equation app menu as 'Solver'. I am also not a fan of the keyboard layout change, as I have more muscle memory with the older layout.

I mostly agree with you. This CW feature could make sense for high school classes, but the management of functions buried inside deep menus is a steep learning curve, non intuitive and slowing calculations. As calculation speed is mostly influenced of how easy a user can keystroke the functions and numbers, also, choosing the proper format(Fix/Eng/SCI) As an engineer with 40+ years using calculators and nowadays still having more than a dozen, I have mixed feelings about this CW series.

@@EJEuth I fully agree. I'm always on the lookout for an engineer/professional tier calculator. I use an Nspire CX II most of the time (purely because I can leave it fully charged attached to the computer rather than use batteries) but eventually settling on Sage or Matlab on the desktop most of the time. @@jimn250 I just bought a Swiss Micros’ DM42, that will be brought to me next August. If I need more, I would use a HP50G (relearning details). More than that, MatLab would be my best path, I guess. My guess is that Casio did it for ECONOMIC/MARKET reasons: to minimize counterfeiting of 991 former series (ES+, EX, LAX, etc), even for the entry-level ones as FX-82CW with several “no name” brands competing with Casio. Using a new Display (hardware) and new menu-driven hierarchy (software) Casio grants itself 1 or 2 years being headache-free of fake complaints and higher profit margin. It might be a challenging bet, where keystroke simplicity and almost-universal use of former standard platform (Casio, Sharp, Canon, no name, etc.) is pushed aside to create this new menu-driven philosophy. Also consider that MORE KEYSTROKES for one problem solving is in the OPPOSITE direction of those outstanding RPN-based calculators, from the golden age of HP. Now CASIO (re)created a scientific calculator series that has the same lot of functionality, but with much MORE key stroking, for well known high school and Engineering problems, with ENG/SCI and Unit Conv. front and back. I foresee this CW series may help SHARP (as EL-516W) and TEXAS (as 30X expand 36X) both with continuous history memory and a “classic” algebraic keystroke operation most of us already know. I do feel pity for students and engineering colleagues that receive one Casio’s CW calculator as a backup/emergency on the same day of an exam. God helps that one!

From what I've seen of it, I'm not a fan of this redesign for two reasons: Firstly, aesthetically, I simply think it looks cheaper. The more significant issue is what appears to be the increased menu diving. This same crap seems to get pulled on things as diverse as PC OSs and synthesizers: claims that burying functionality in menus somehow improves "ease of use". No, sorry, but IMO it doesn't; it just makes doing anything slower. Putting common functions under menus is typically one of my problems with using graphing calculators too. I'll take more button based functions any day, and given the amount of complaints I've seen about the entire CW series, I don't think I'm alone in thinking that they're a bit of a misstep by Casio.

As I recall the cw has taken away some of the mathematical features. I use my calculator seldom, pivot tables are what I do nearly every other day, and that’s mostly sums under the hood.😊

Not bad. The only reasons i didn't choose that one was because a lot of universities didn't put it in their exam allowlist and because i didn't want to learn several new calculator functions right before exams. But i really like it. It seems to have made a lot of things like unit conversion easier. But I don't like the lack of colours on it, make it look old.

Overall, as I see it, the CW is a robust and highly capable calculator. Yes, the EX Classwiz js higher on the aesthetically pleasing scale, the CW’s function library is quite extensive and flexible. To see that it’s suitable for engineers and others in scientific disciplines. For it to be on the same caliber as TI’s 30X Pro Mathprint and 36X Pro demonstrates just how powerful this calculator is. For such an advanced calculator, its circular keyboard, nested menu structure, the somewhat busy keyboard nomenclature are worth the sacrifices. If it’s a replacement for the EX Classwiz, the EX will be sadly missed. Overall a 15 out of 10 for me.

As an electrical engineer, I cannot say anything positive about this new CW, it is a pain to use. the EX had everything I wanted, the CW is a inferior in many ways. Why on earth did they put ENG under that Format key - just to annoy people with doing 3 keystrokes instead of one? I am glad I still have an ES and EX. I hope they will come with a successor of the CW that address all deficiencies it has in comparison with the older models.

Casio fan since 1978 but this is going in the wrong direction. In general, menus are less handy than direct acces buttons. It compares to touchscreens in cars (less safe). For calculators safety is not an issue, but unneccesary menus just make things more complicated than they are. The round buttons, which i find ugly, are just more marketing B.S. as, at the same time, Casio says the new buttons of the 991 ES+ 2nd edition have a bigger touch-area than the buttons of the previous 991 ES+....

The "upgraded" product looks like art/design people applying "idiot-oriented" design on scientific calculators. I think designers do not even know how to use engineering/scientific calculators, and they assume everyone is unable to use those calculator as themselves. Such a design may be suitable for financial or daily calculators, but high-end scientific calculators should not hide everything in the menu and should not forget to consider typing efficiency.

I see this re-design like a low cost production desing (but selling at same EX991SPII price, of course). And it has a poorest keyboard and functions design too, in my opinion. I don't like this CASIO Classwiz movement and design. I'm most fine with the EX... Or an advanced Classwiz MS has better and honest design than this CW in my opinion. An EX-991SPII with EX-82SPII/GTX basic black pattern colors, with more text and lines on LCD configs (and other typpgrafy style like CW or classics LCD??), and CASIO will can take me 25-35 € again 😢😂.
