The Casio CG50 on-screen menu structure is super easy to use once you become familiar with it; but for those who can't be bothered to make that investment, Casio provides a powerful alternative, its inbuilt Catalog (Shift-4), which functions rather like the TI approach. The TI84 is better in certain respects (e.g. it packs far more data in the screen for lists and spreadsheet data) but one would really have to compare the Casio CG50 with the TI-Nspire CX II (non-CAS version) to achieve a fairer fight.

And what s your opinion about those, because I have seen Prime versus Nspire (winner: Prime); ti 84 versus Nspire (winner Nspire); this video (in my opinion winner is Casio). But what about Cg 50 versus Prime ( a part from CAS)? Have they all Probability, Stat and Finance stuff?

Seriously. It only gives you valid selections at any given point, and if you actually know what function you want, you should recognize it instantly. If you need an Enigma Machine to decipher the abbreviations, you probably shouldn't be using a calculator this advanced to begin with.

I feel like any calculator that isn't a TI is judged more harshly for some reason. For instance, you claimed the Casio was "quite a bit faster," and at the end you said it's "just as capable as" the TI. But those are both enormous understatements. Depending on what you're doing, the Casio is like 2-10x faster than the TI for half the price. It should really be a no-brainer what calculator to get. Protip: if you're the kind of person that's checking out youtube vids to compare graphing calculators, I 110% guarantee you're gonna be fine figuring out Casio's menus lol.

I have been using the TI-84 for the past year, I really like it how ever I have upgraded to the Casio as it you can enter complex numbers and polar number in the matrice for solving linear equations. TI-84 doesnt allow this in matrices, which is required for my electrical classes. The Casio will also both polar and complex numbers to be used in the same matrix, which is great. Both calculators are good units, I agree with you the TI-84's menu layout better than the casio.

TI devices sell because that's what every teacher wants you to bring to class and what everyone else has been using. I tried the sum function on a TI-nspire CX II-T and an HP Prime G2. The TI takes about 3.5 seconds, while the HP is so fast that you can't measure it. The result is displayed almost immediately after pressing the Enter key. It's enormous how different the speed of calculators in a similar price range is. Because the Casio and the TI-84 Plus are not that much cheaper, at least here in Germany. The HP, as well as the TI nspire can both do Python, as well as CAS. The HP can also do UPN. And both have an examination mode where the teacher can then lock the programmability, CAS and much more (is constantly signalled by LEDs that are clearly visible). At least here in Germany, they are approved for exams. Casio FX-CG50 -- €106.57 TI-84 Plus CE -- 119,95 € HP Prime G2 -- 115,95 € TI-Nspire CX II-T CAS -- 139.95 € Personally, I prefer the HP, which in my opinion simply has the better operating concept (including a touchscreen), similar to the Casio. But that is of course a matter of taste.

I have a $20 Casio fx-991EX and I prefer it to my TI-84 quite a bit. The engineering button is handy, putting the answer in exact terms instead of approximations is critical in Calc, and it's just faster to use because the TI has everything in menus. I can do a definite integral right from a button on the Casio, but I have to go to a menu in the TI and then I have to put the formula in parenthesis with the variable and the limits separated by commas. I need SIMULT2, or I'd definitely use the cheap Casio all the time. If only it supported complex numbers in matrix operations, it would be perfect. Though, having more lines of previous computations would be nice, too.

The TI-84 can give exact answers as well. Just press the fraction to decimal button to toggle between fraction and decimal. Even my mid range TI-30XS scientific calculator can do this. The TI-84 is still going to be the more capable calculator mainly because teachers and instructors will know their way around the TI-84 more so than the Casio across North America. So if you need help, your instructors are more likely to know exactly what you need to press to input your mathematical calculations. TI also just generally has more support in North America as well. Both are great calculators. But the TI will be the better solution if your going to university more often than not. Especially if the lesson plans are molded around the TI.

In Europe TI is not widely used it’s the total opposite than the US, tho the HP Prime is far superior makes them both look like kids calculators just a shame HP wasn’t adopted and since HP has dropped out of the calculator market they is very little support for software development for HP unlike CASIO it’s fully support it tho TI has lately dropped support so just CASIO left.

Texas Instruments was very smart when graphing calculators started being introduced in the late 1980s. While TI was late to the party (Casio and Hewlett Packard introduced their graphing models way earlier) , TI worked very closely with US textbook publishers, with textbook exercises based on TI keystrokes and format. Further, TI has a lot of outreach with science and math teachers in the US. Coming up on 35 years, the TI-83 and TI-84 calculator families are what most teachers recommend that students get.

Yes… I think schools (and their students) and the associated standardized testing govern the modern calculator market. TI does not market to individual students (or engineers) any more; it markets to larger entities… school districts, etc. Once districts or states have picked a preferred calculator, teachers and students naturally follow. In the U.S. this almost always means TI. All this also results in the stagnation of much further calculator development. Our ‘devices’ and their software have largely supplanted calculators outside of the schools. It’s a bit of a shame, because dedicated devices like calculators *can* be nicer to work with than purely software-based platforms (e.g. smartphones).

It took about 40secs on the similar B&W Casio fix-9750GIII, not too bad. I ran it on the HP Prime and got the result back instantly. The HP Prime is always very fast. As you point out, it runs *much* slower on Casio’s lower-cost calculators; I tried it on the fx-115es plus 2nd edition (similar, I believe to the fx-991ES)… it was so slow that I rewrote it to only do 1000 summations rather than 10,000… it took 4 minutes to perform 1/10th of the summations.

There is virtually no math problem that Alpha can't handle. It does symbolic algebra and calculus without a pause. In fact, it will give you the necessary steps it used to get the answer. Best of all, it's free.

TI played it smart...when graphing calculators were first introduced in the mid- to late-1980s, teachers generally panicked. The concern was that students wouldn't be learning fundamental skills (particularly in Algebra 2-Trig, Pre-Calc, and Calculus). Texas Instruments worked very hard to create acceptance for graphing calculators by creating calculator-friendly content for textbook publishers, and doing outreach with math and science teachers. The result is that textbooks and teachers are built around the TI products. Casio and HP have been playing catch-up for almost 35 years now.

In the rare events they do want drawing, they simply ask for apprx drawing or partial graphs. They do not expect students to walk with expensive graphing calcs. The most useful thing that has come out of the calculator business in the last 20 years is the ability to input formulae as we write on our notes. If graphing calcs are so important, how do you think people in the '50s, '60s, and '70s solved complex problems of fighter jets, submarines, satellites, space telescopes, space shuttles, missiles, sky-scrapers, suspension bridges, molecular biology, quantum physics, etc., when there was no graphing calculators? Indeed, how do you think calculus itself was developed back when they didn't even have a mechanical calculator at that time? 😃 You do not need a graphing calc, ever! It might be cool and it might show you a few fancy graphs, but it's NOT essential to even do your Ph.D! :-)

I sincerely don't get why Texas still includes that ridiculous hardware into their products. I don't think the Casio can be considered as a powerful or fast piece of hardware, but yet that Ti-84 accomplishes to pale if compared to that. @@AmerM7 I get it but they're offering incredibly poor hardware for a considerably higher price. I would be quite ok to have a only slightly superior or at least comparable product while paying more for their brand, but Casio is making 50 dollars calculator faster than any of theirs at this point. That's unacceptable dude. And i can't get why they keep doing this. We're not talking about a market where research or particular development has to be done. Any Cortex chip would perform infinitely better than any calculator from both Texas and Casio while probably consuming less and costing nothing. And i don't want my calculator to be able to run COD Mobile, even moving a slightly complex graph in a seemingly fluid way would be enough. Something you obviously don't get even on their 150 dollars top tier model nowadays, and that you can do with a free app on any phone. That's simply ridicolous.

@ekifi
@ekifi 4 жыл бұрын
@@AmerM7 I guess people keep buying those because they have to, they're necessary and even requested by schools in several places globally. The problem is that in the US Texas products are the only ones teacher know how to use and will request for their classes, the only ones school books include exercises for and the only ones everyone has used in the past 30 years, so they can pretty much do whatever they want with prices without worrying about market share or competitors. People will just buy their product. And while that's surely not good i could stay with it, until they actually put some effort and at least make their shitty calculators usable. As I said I bought a Ti-Nspire touchpad some time ago and I've been incredibly disappointed with its performances. All it takes to make it lag is a long text or a function more complex than a linear one. And with Casios doing a lot more and better with LOWER prices everything becomes even more ridiculous.
