Excellent intro for newbies. 5:16, S⇔D stands for symbolic (not surd) to decimal. On the earlier CG10/20 models this toggle key reads F⇔D (fraction to decimal).

What do you think of the newly designed CG50 keyboard? I'm HUGELY disappointed. The keys in the bottom four rows are wobbly, clackety, and sometimes fail to respond if pressed non-centrally. For example, if I press 75 fast, I can get 775 or just 7, even though two distinct key depressions are felt and heard. The GC20 keyboard is far superior. It's true, the CG50's screen clarity and extra processing speed are very welcome, but this horrible cheap keyboard is a big step backwards in my opinion. I've complained to Casio UK about it.

I do agree that it is not as nice under your fingers as some of the previous calculators. I usually find a way of coming to terms with these changes though by using it for a while and getting used to it. For the price of these calculators, you would have thought that the physical quality would match the software quality.

@mathshelpwithmrorys8555
@mathshelpwithmrorys8555 5 жыл бұрын
I do not believe so. There are programs that you can find online to download and install that will do things like GCD, so you may have some luck with those. As for polynomial division, if you mean the algebraic manipulation of expressions, then no it does not do that. If you are preparing for an exam, it may help you to know that no calculator that is capable of algebraic manipulation is allowed in exams.

Should I buy Ti-84 plus ce or Casio FX CG50? I need it for school and want it to last throughout college
@mathshelpwithmrorys8555

To be honest, both will essentially do the same thing. Personally I prefer the Casio, as I find it more intuitive, but others will argue the same for the Texas. My advice would be to find out which brand your school prefers, then go with that. Your teachers will likely feel more comfortable with one over the other and thus be able to help you more if you choose that one. Both are very good.

@mathshelpwithmrorys8555 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I am glad it has been helpful so far. "Best" is always a difficult one to answer. Some people will prefer other brands such as Texas, but personally I prefer Casio. The CG50 is the highest specification calculator that Casio make that is suitable for students taking exams. I would personally view it as the best calculator for students currently available on the market, but some people may disagree. Yes, you can solve some equations with it: linear, quadratics, cubics etc and there are some ways for other non-polynomial solutions too.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but on the Casio fx-991 EX I could type in a function, say "2x^2 + 3x", and then I could press the 'CALC' button to input values of x, and it would give me the result. Do you know how to do this on the CG50?
@mathshelpwithmrorys8555
@mathshelpwithmrorys8555 5 жыл бұрын
I must say that I don't tend to do this myself, but you can do a similar thing via inputted values. Store a value for x, then type your expression in and it will evaluate it for that value of x. You can then use the arrow keys to move back up to where you stored the value for x, change the value, and the new expression value will automatically recalculate. Hopefully that makes sense. Let me know if not and I will make a video on it for you.

Would you say there's a big advantage of having a cg50 over a c991 classwiz for A - Level Exams (Inc f maths)? Considering whether I should get one or not.
@mathshelpwithmrorys8555
@mathshelpwithmrorys8555 5 жыл бұрын
Personaly, I would say so, yes. There is obviously a big jump up in price, but if you can overcome that hurdle, I would always advise getting the cg50 over the Classwiz. The ability to draw graphs is enormous. If you are doing Further Maths A Level, you will be doing polar graphs too, which can be very hard to picture. Quickly drawing a graph will help with the question you are doing. Please check out the videos on my channel on drawing graphs to see what you can do.

Is there a FACT key? And if not how do you find the factors of a large number on it.
@mathshelpwithmrorys8555
@mathshelpwithmrorys8555 5 жыл бұрын
Sadly not. And as far as I can work out, it does not have factorisation as a built in function. I don't know why they omitted this when many cheaper calculators have it. There are plenty of programs that are available online to download and install on your calculator though if you want to.

@@laganuk Yes, you are right. There isn't anything that can be done about that. However, the Casio fx-991EX 'Classwiz' calculator is relatively cheap and has factorising on it. And for that matter, so do many scientific calculators. So you could always take more than one calculator into the exam if you want that functionality in the room with you.

There is no percentage key or function built in. The closest that it comes is in the Financial section of the menu, although I have not played with that much. However, setting up expressions to calculate percentages shouldn't be too hard, they just don't have the built in functionality.
@cosmokayat

Yes, this is truly unbelievable, no percent key or change percent key (delta percent). They have a square root key and a cube root key and an xth root key but no percent? Why have a cube root key when there is already an xth root key? It's redundant. Even a dollar store calculator has a percent key.
@JoeLinux2000
@JoeLinux2000 5 жыл бұрын
I was amazed that this was missing too. At least this has clarified that the key is non existent. I think Casio needs to market a practice book that goes along with each of their calculators. Maybe they already do, and I just don't know about it. I have two of these calculators, the 115ES PLUS, and now the CG50. Both are very difficult to get started with. I have an Android app that mimics the operation of the Casio. The Pro version of that cost $2.00 and is well worth it. It certain ways it is superior to these hardware models, but it's hard to learn too. I bought the real calculators to better understand the Android app. The Android app mimics the 115ES, but has graphing too. Pressing the "ENG" key gives the output in several different numerical formats which I find valuable as it helps to understand how they relate to one another.

Is there no way to simply copy and paste a line or answer?
@mathshelpwithmrorys8555
@mathshelpwithmrorys8555 3 жыл бұрын
A line? Yes. An answer? No. Weirdly you can only do one but not the other, but since you can copy a line, you can run it again, and then either use that, or store the answer into a letter. To copy a line, use the arrow keys to go back up to the relevant line of input, making sure to highlight the whole line. Then, press Shift 8 ("Clip"), which is the same as "Copy". You can then go back down to the bottom of your screen to a new line of working, and press Shift 9 ("Paste"). I hope that helps.

Thanks for the video. I learned some things such as storing a number in a memory location. I tried to do a temperature conversion, but ended up getting a syntax error. The CG50 is not very intuitive. I can do it with out problem on my other two calculators.. Again the $2.00 Android app is the best so far. Unless I become more skilled with this calculator, I'm sort of regretting purchasing it. Here's something I would love to be able to do: Convert a decimal time into hours and minutes. For example, 1.5 would be 1 hour 30 minutes.
@mathshelpwithmrorys8555
@mathshelpwithmrorys8555 5 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you found it useful. Android apps might be good, but you can't use them in exams.... For the temperature conversions, go into the main calculation mode, press OPTN, F6, F1 (CONVERT), then type in for example 27, then F6, F2 (TMPR), 1 (deg C), F1 (arrow), F2 (TMPR), 3 (deg F). Your screen should now display "27[*C]>[*F]", where * is the degrees symbol, and > is the black arrow. Press enter and it will convert 27 degrees celsius to 82.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Hope that helps. As for converting decimal time into real time, I don't think I've ever seen a calculator do that. It might be easier if you make use of the fractions button, putting it out of 60, especially if you use the mixed number format (SHIFT, A b/c) so that then you can have 1 30/60 as your display, which the calculator will then understand as 1.5. Press F-D to switch between different forms of the display.

@@mathshelpwithmrorys8555, the RPN calculator for Android has the decimal to Hours, Minuets, and Seconds function. I've ordered two different HP calculators, the HP-50 and the Prime. It will be interesting to see if I can find the time conversion on those. I also purchased a TI nspire. Each different calculator I have has different strengths and weaknesses. Thanks for your response. I don't think I would have ever figured out the temperature conversion by myself. By the way the Android App version has a very nice much simpler temperature conversion as a part of the calculator. Regarding the time conversion issue I was making calculations of the progress and ETA of various Iditarod Dog Sled race competitors: Lets say a given sled is 1.7 miles from the next check point and is presently traveling at 7.2 MPH. 1.7 / 7.2 = .236 .236 * 60 = 14.17 which means the sled will arrive at the check point in approx 14 minutes and .17 x 60 seconds which is approx 10 seconds. So in theory the Musher, sled and dogs will arrive in 14 minutes and 10 seconds, although estimating the arrival of a dog sled to the second is rather ridiculous. but that's how it's done mathematically. On the Virtual HP-35 RPN calculator there is an ->HMS function above the ->H button which converts a number to h.hh, but I don't know what the meaning of h.hh is. 3.33 is converted to 3:19:48 seconds while it is converted to h.hh 3.55. If you know what h.hh is and how it works, I would like to know.
@JoeLinux2000
@JoeLinux2000 5 жыл бұрын
@@mathshelpwithmrorys8555 There is a time section in the conversions on the Casio CG50. Perhaps you can figure out how to use it to do my Dog Sled arrival problem. So far all I have figured out is .5[h] > [min] gives 30. Perhaps you can figure out how to convert a decimal like 3.55 hours to H:M:S using the Casio's time conversion section. It's in the same area as the Temperature conversion.

You are correct. There is no % button. As far as I am aware, none of the graphical calculators from any of the manufacturers have a % button, although I may be incorrect. @@mathshelpwithmrorys8555 I ordered several books. One is specifically for the TI-nspire. Of the calculators I have presently, I seem to like the TI-nspire the best, but it's difficult to get started with. Just turning it off is a challenge. What I like about the nspire is how easy it is to copy previous answers into new problems. The Key clicks are very positive, whereas the Casio keys are rather sloppy and often they don't enter. Also the TI-nspire's navigation seems simple and clean compared to the CASIO CG-50. All in all it seems pretty neat, but professionals like the HP-Prime better, so that's why I ordered one of those this morning. People are also fond of the HP-50 which has RPN. I haven't used a true hardware RPN yet, but RPN seems over rated to me. Whatever system TI uses on the nspire seems in general pretty nice. I prefer the display in most cases over the Casio's. As an aside some of the software for the TI-nspire was developed in Grenoble France. Interestingly a French mathematician helped develop the Pianoteq virtual piano which is a fantastically good virtual piano that rivals the finest and most expensive genuine acoustic instruments. It's based on mathematical modeling, not on sound sampling. As a result, its footprint is comparatively small and it boots very quickly. With the pro-version every parameter is adjustable for every single note. How they can get so much out of an ordinary computer sound card is absolutely amazing. It does require a beefy processor. Celerons won't cut it. I5's run it easily at about 25% processor load.
