Casio Pro Trek Smart Outdoor Watch WSD-F20 Hands-on

Casio's got a new smartwatch for CES 2017, the Pro Trek Smart Outdoor Watch WSD-F20. If this ruggedized Android wear Model looks familiar, there's good reason for that, as the manufacturer has returned with a follow-up up to last year's WSD-F10 that hits a lot of the same design notes, but comes across as maybe even a little more aggressive-looking than its predecessor.

The problem I see is the same problem with every lithium battery dependent device (cell phone). There are only so many charges you have until the battery starts severely degrading. After 2 years with a $500 watch, would anyone be happy when the charge only lasts about 4 hours and a battery replacement is either not possible or costs a couple hundred? I don't think so.

how right you are. You only got the lifespan wrong. After 7 years my battery needs replacing, I'm getting 4 - 5 hours out of it before dying. Just ordered one but I reckon this will be the last one it has considering they'll stop making them before another 7 years happens.

Stick to pro-trek, forget all the smart watch, gps nonsense. Outdoor watch that needs frequent recharge is not an outdoor watch, tough solar is the way to go.

nah guys, dont be so conservative. wont help anyone. gps is needed for exact positioning, as well as exact and constant altimeter action. btw: there are solar panels that weight about 150g, also battery packs available. it more seems, that the "classic" (solar) abc watches are going to die almost completely, as the batteries and smartwaches get better and better. heck, the classic battery watch will die completely soon. the classic abc watches, they will have only a reason to exist for...i dont know.. whoever is outside for many days in a row, without any chance of finding electricity, no solar charger with them, no battery pack....which would be about 0,00001% of humanity.

I would agree with you regarding this watch but the Garmin Fenix 5 and Quatix 5 are far superior to this watch. The battery lasts 2 weeks. That's pretty darn good and it has a very accurate heart rate monitor. Many workout options. The Casio is enormously overpriced.

A used Garmin Nuvi 245/250/255 in your pocket does just as much and at $12 on eBay is a hell of a lot cheaper than a $500 protrek. Put an SD card in it and you can even install open source topo maps for hiking. Downside: you have to be outside to pick up the satellite signal, to get the time... which btw is satellite atomic accurate... as there is no internal time keeping clock in the Nuvi unit to maintain the time when off. So get a cheap casio $15/$25 AE1200 or something for your wrist, and have a whole map of the US in your pocket. The silver version $25 Ae1200 looks very sharp so splurge an extra $10 for the metal band silver version. You'll impress the girls a lot with your clever thriftiness, and they'll appreciate that you have $450 left over to pick them up and take them out on dates or to a reasonable priced dinner at a real restaurant like a Chinese All you can eat buffet, unlike the foolish guy with the $500 watch that only had enough money left to buy them a mushed valuburger at the McDonalds drive thru. Thank me later when you live happily ever after...

Don't know why you guys think there are no people that will pay the price, heck i payed more for g shocks...sure the price will come down but for such feature packed "watch" i will pay the price...and i like mechanical stuff better...i cannot go with companies that have no horological background to call any of their products "a watch" so with casio it has a little bit of provenance. It is illogical but still.

I'm very sorry I bought this model. 1. no sound alarm, sound buttons, reminder. Only vibration. 2. Color displays in daylight are very pale and misty. I made a comparison with garmin fenix 5 x 3. The chain is from nasty material. 4. The battery does not live for 1 month at all. Comparison with Sunto and Garmin. Not an effective commercial. It didn't tell me what I need to know to get interested. Case Diameter: 61.7mm, Water resistant to 50m, 25 hours of battery life with GPS on and one month when in Timepiece mode. (Next I'll need a KZbin reviewer to upload a destruction test to see if it'll take a beating)

The problem with smartwatches is they are not utility-based. They try to live in the old analogue world / design with smart features. Any designer out there - read this because it will be the most clever 60 seconds you will read today: A utility based smartwatch can't be round. It must be rectangular. it must be twice as wide as any watch today. Basically it must be a phone on your arm. Just smaller. But DON'T MAKE A SMARTWATCH ROUND - IT MUST BE RECTANGULAR! Also; 1. It must be a text-based menu - don't try to squeeze in touch for the sake of it - Too small for it 2. No one is going to write emails on it - 3. Make an app so we can use the standard phone for settings 4. We want; - Time 1, Time 2, - Timer 1, Timer 2 (for intervals) - Stopwatch with 1000 lap memory - Backlight with custom delay - MP3, Bluetooth, FM Radio - mSD-card to 128GB - mUSB-charging - pair googles with bluetooth 4.1 camera for remote view or spy or for instructions (Imagine working, looking for something, then someone can call you with video messenger and guide you through it) - Task list with Google calender or similar integration - GPS / map with built-in locator app/feature - Left and Right fitting - etc.
