What's the reason for adding a quarter in vs using the 3.5 headphone jack? Just curious...

I have an sk1 that is getting very little output through the speaker, however it sounds okay when headphones are plugged in. Do you think the speaker needs to be replaced, and where would you suggest getting a new one?
